Pupils plant seedlings
NEXT TIME you stroll around
Foster Park in Rolleston you
may notice some changes to the
south-east corner.
Pupils from Rolleston Christian
School and Broadfield
School recently planted 600
native seedlings there over two
days.
The park is one of several areas
around Selwyn where schoolchildren
have been taking part
in Kids’ Discovery Plant-Out
days.
Other recent plant-out days
involved Springston School
pupils planting 500 seedlings at
Chamberlains Ford and West
Melton School pupils planting
300 seedlings at Kowhai Reserve.
As well as beautifying the areas,
these plantings will provide
habitat for native birds, invertebrates
and lizards.
The plant-out days are a
collaborative project between
the Te Ara Kakariki Greenway
Canterbury Trust, Enviroschools
and the district council which
began last year. They are held
in autumn and spring. Other
supporters of the project include
the Department of Conservation,
the Rata Foundation and
Whakaora Te Waihora.
As well as carrying out the
plantings, the pupils learn about
native biodiversity with local
experts.
For those who took part in
the Foster Park plant-out days,
activities included learning to
spent time investigating the
stream and insect life in the
vicinity of Chamberlains Ford.
Greendale School, Glentunnel
School, Leeston Consolidated
School and Lincoln Primary
School will take part in further
plant-out days to be held around
the district in the coming
weeks.
