Concert to honour iconic rock event
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PERFORMING IN tonight’s
concert to commemorate
legendary Canadian-American
roots rock group The Band will
be a trip down memory lane for
Southbridge singer-songwriter
Paul Ubana Jones.
Jones, along with Arthur’s
Pass musician Adam McGrath
and Lyttelton musician Delaney
Davidson, have been handpicked
by original musical
director and producer of The
Band, John Simon, to perform in
the 40th anniversary concert.
It will honour The Band’s
final concert at San Francisco’s
Winterland Ballroom on
Thanksgiving Day in 1976.
The tour will travel around
New Zealand and perform its
first show at the Isaac Theatre
Royal starring The Band’s
original keyboardist Garth
Hudson and John Simon.
Jones first saw The Band at The
Royal Albert Hall in London
in 1966 backing up Bob Dylan
at his infamous “Judas” show,
where he switched from playing
folk music to rocking out on an
electric guitar.
He then saw The Band,
made up of Rick Danko, Garth
Hudson, Richard Manuel,
Adam McGrath Delaney Davidson Paul Ubana Jones
Robbie Robertson and Levon
Helm in what he described as “in
their full strength” at Wembley
Stadium in 1975.
He said the music The Band
played was extremely diverse,
heartfelt music which influenced
his own career of creating
soulful, contemporary music.
“It was a different era. Let’s be
honest you know if you didn’t
smoke grass or hashish well too
bad because these joints were
being passed around . . . that was
the era it was in,” he said.
Born in London in 1952, Jones
moved to Southbridge about 22
years ago and played his first
Christchurch concert in 1988.
In his time in the country,
Jones has won three New
Zealand music awards and
has continued to perform
internationally.
He said he is touched to
be chosen by John Simon to
perform in The Last Waltz and
will perform an array of songs
including Forever Young by
Bob Dylan, and It Makes No
Difference by Rick Danko.
McGrath said he was most
excited about playing with some
of his local heroes and watching
Garth Hudson play.
“It is kind of one of those great
STAR-STUDDED: Bob Dylan and The Band during
The Last Waltz concert in San Francisco in 1976. A
40th anniversary tribute concert will be held at the
Isaac Theatre Royal tonight.
things that every now and again
pops up and keeps you going. I
am really glad I decided to make
music for a living, McGrath said.
McGrath made his career in
folk music as the lead singer
of The Eastern but also spends
his time travelling around the
country to perform.
Davidson said it was amazing
to be performing in such a
concert with legends such as
Simon and Hudson.
“The range of music is huge . . .
it was almost the end of an era,”
he said.
Davidson has made a career of
touring his music in Europe and
the United States and has
been the winner of the APRA
New Zealand Country Music
Song
of the Year three years in a row.
His latest achievement
was being awarded The Arts
Foundation’s The Laureate
Award last year, receiving
$50,000 for excellence across a
range of art forms.
