16 Under strength Leeston Southbridge lose T20 • By Tom Doudney Tuesday January 24 2017 LEESTON SOUTHBRIDGE put in a spirited performance but still lost the CRV Ambreed country premier T20 cricket tournament to Sefton by nine runs. Chasing Sefton’s 143/9, Leeston Southbridge, which were missing nine first-choice players, finished on 134/6 from 20 overs at Mandeville on Saturday. Leeston Southbridge had six players away with the Canterbury Country team which beat Marlborough at Mainpower Oval, Rangiora, on Saturday in a two-day match, and another three players were away on holiday. Opener Ben Chamberlain hit an impressive 66 not out off 48 balls for Leeston Southbridge, but it was not enough to get his team over the line. In Rangiora, Canterbury Country bowled Marlborough out for 102 before racking up 281/7 at the end of the first innings. For Canterbury Country, former Black Cap Shanan Stewart hit 105, while Matt Laffey scored 69 and Tim Guijters scored 50. The best of the Canterbury Country bowlers were Fraser Sheat with 4-23 and Stewart with 4-27. Due to rain on Sunday, it was not possible to play the second innings and Canterbury Country were awarded the win. Talented Lincoln team take out Ellesmere bowls rooster title • By Karolyn Boon LINCOLN 4 have taken out the Ellesmere bowls rooster competition. With such a large club, Lincoln had the luxury of entering four teams in the competition. The selectors got it right with Lincoln 4, keeping last year’s performing junior team together after they won the Canterbury Centre junior triples. That team of Michael Begg, Mundy Carroll and Martin Rowson were joined by Dave Williams, Lynton Withell and Nick Alfeld, another talented junior, to finish two points ahead of an experienced Lincoln 3 team. Dunsandel came in third on 27 points. In the recent quadrangular representative tournament, Ellesmere bowlers defended three out of the four trophies up for grabs in a hot and windy day on the greens. They played against some strong Mid-Canterbury, Malvern and Hurunui teams. The men’s teams played at Allenton, Hampstead and Methven, while the ladies were hosted by Darfield and Kirwee. Unfortunately, it was only the senior men who managed to retain their Mugford Trophy, winning it on differential. The day gave selectors an opportunity to select the country development team to play a town team, selected from Christchurch clubs, on February 12 at Methven. Ellesmere’s Bev Skurr was named in the country development ladies’ team, with Sandy Guy selected as a reserve for the team of 10. As yet, the men’s development team is still to be named. Results: Senior Ladies: Mid- Canterbury 18 points; Ellesmere 10 points; Malvern 8 points. Once herself a Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer and awarded a M.N.Z.M. in 2015 for her services to ballet, Ann now runs the Aspire Dance School at Springston in Selwyn along with her daughter Fleur Cullinane, also a former R.N.Z.B. dancer and Rebecca Adam who was invited to perform her solos in New York and was successfully placed. “We are very lucky to have a school where we have all had professional dance experience,” she says. “It does make a difference to the way we teach.” This high-calibre school has also received international acclaim recently when past pupil Monica Brosnahan was invited by the Russian Government to take part in the Vaganova International Competition in St Petersburg. As a result of her success at this event she has now been invited to apply as an international student to the Russian Ballet School in St Petersburg. “We are so delighted for her as she is a dedicated student who has worked so hard to become a successful dancer.” It is just not the high performing students that Ann is interested in teaching. “We absolutely love teaching young people that just want to come and enjoy dance. Its good for deportment and we enjoy sharing a love of moving to music and a quiet gaining of confidence.” Ann recently had to move the dance school from the Tai Tapu Hall to the Springston Hall but is delighted with the new location. She is now taking enrolments for the 2017 year in Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary classes for pupils aged from 3 ½ years to 18 years of age. SELWYN TIMES Tuesday January 24 2017 17 Pets & their owners to celebrate new pet food shop Tails will be wagging and whiskers quivering with excitement as the dogs and cats of the south-west areas get wind of the new pet food shop that has opened in Rolleston. Real Pet Food, previously trading as Hillmorton Pet Food in Hoon Hay for almost 25 years, has just opened its doors in Jones Road. Owner Bernie Hutton is thrilled with his new premises in a newly constructed block of five shops, which he says are much bigger than his former shop and are equipped with brand-new machinery for processing the pet food. The Hillmorton staff members have come to work at the new premises, plus an additional staff member has been employed, and since the shop opened many of the Hillmorton customers have been in for their pet supplies, Bernie says. These also include a range of birdseed. Real Pet Food offers fresh, raw meat, which the business sources from reputable suppliers, processes on site without the addition of any artificial colours or preservatives, and displays for sale in the store’s brandnew chillers and freezers. “This is proper food without any additives so it’s better for the animals, plus they don’t eat as much because it satisfies them,” says Bernie. Real Pet Food is also offering online sales through its new website, www.realpetfood.nz. The meat is available for purchase frozen in carton lots, and there is no delivery charge for customers across Christchurch city and the Selwyn district. The business also supplies meat for several organisations that need to have quality food for animals. These include sheep stations requiring meat for their dogs, the greyhound racing industry, and Orana Wildlife Park, to feed their hungry lions, cheetahs and meerkats. To celebrate Real Pet Food’s arrival in Rolleston, the store is holding an official opening event this Saturday, starting at 10am. There will be a sausage sizzle and refreshments, plus it will be a great opportunity for pet owners to swap doggie tales and chat about what their cats get up to. n Real Pet Food is located at Shop 4, 855 Jones Road Rolleston, opposite Redpaths.
