Some are simple, immediate solutions, while others are great to bear in mind when rebuilding or renovating. Overheating in New Zealand homes is a common problem. However, passive cooling keeps your home at a comfortable, constant temperature throughout the hottest days and nights without the need for air conditioning. This system works by utilising shade and insulation to keep heat at bay during the summer, heat-storing materials such as concrete to absorb heat that it releases later in the day when it cools down outdoors, and breeze and air circulation inside your home to keep temperatures down. PASSIVE COOLING Passive cooling is something to be seriously considered during the design process on any rebuild or renovation project. Air conditioning can be expensive in the long run with electricity costs, while implementing sustainable options in the design of your home will save you and the planet. Good design strikes a balance between keeping in the warmth during the cooler months and keeping it cool during the warmer months, and providing ventilation in order to bring fresh, healthy air into your home. THERMAL MASS Materials with high thermal mass, like concrete, brick and stone, can be maximised for floors and walls. Combined with the right insulation in the right place, thermal mass materials will absorb heat as long as the air temperature is higher than the temperature of the thermal mass. Positioned where it will get direct sun in winter, but not in summer, will keep the air temperature cool during the warmer months. Many passive cooling solutions can easily be added in retrospect to existing homes, too. Shading can be achieved either by installing blinds on the inside or awnings over the windows on the outside. Other fixed shading options include eaves, pergolas, fixed louvres and covered balconies. EAVES Eaves should be designed to let as much light in as possible in winter, but keep the sun out in the summer. The specific design depends upon the amount of glazing in your home, which way it faces and the amount of sunlight you prefer to let in. SHADE Calling on the expert advise of a seasoned landscape designer can provide valuable shade. Taking the sun’s path into account clever planting will provide shade during the summer, while allowing in light during the winter. Deciduous vines and trees let winter sun through while still giving shade in the summer. Ground-cover plants keep surface and ground temperatures lower in summer and also reduces glare. A shaded courtyard adjacent to the main living area can act as a cool air well. VENTILATION Harnessing the natural flow of the air in your home is another way to keep rising temperatures at bay. One way is to orient your home to face the prevailing breeze or by using passive ventilation to encourage the air to circulate throughout your home. Opening doors, windows, vents and louvres lets the fresh air in while removing moisture and airbourne pollutants.
