The new youth council includes four returning members from last year – Kusal Ekanayake (20, Springs Ward), Paige Money Sullivan (16, Selwyn Central Ward), Harrison Crossley (16, Springs Ward) and Ella McClure (17, Ellesmere Ward). New members are Georgia Watson (17, Malvern), Michelle Bruce (15, Malvern), Harry Mayo (16, Selwyn Central), Olivia Duder (14, Selwyn Central), Gabriel Clarke (16, Selwyn Central), Maria Mendoza-Nieto (15, Springs), Maisie Wood (16, Springs) and Katelyn Twiss (14, Ellesmere). Youth council members had a team building exercise when they visited Christchurch Adventure Park with Mayor Sam Broughton last week and took part in a zip-lining challenge. Next month they will visit the YMCA Wainui Park camp on Banks Peninsula for an orientation weekend. A chair for the youth council will be appointed by the group mid-year, with Kusal Ekanayake and Paige Sullivan acting as co-chairs until that time. New member Gabriel Clarke said it would be a privilege to help make Selwyn a community where youth could thrive and flourish. “New Zealand values its young people, and makes wonderful investments in youth. It’s up to us to respond pro-actively to the opportunities our community provides for us,” she said. “The voice of youth has so much to offer, and it’s my privilege to channel those ideas and energy.” Mr Broughton said the youth council was a reminder that Selwyn is full of great young people who are keen to contribute to the community. “I look forward to working with them and seeing them develop over the year,” Mr Broughton said.
