To use Phil Goff and Auckland as a reference is pathetic. To even consider such an option is distasteful. Does he honestly think it will not have an effect on the cost of living? Maybe he should consider asking his fellow councillors to donate their annual salaries to his efforts to fix the roads, after all they are in office to work for the benefit of the public are they not. No, he would rather increase the cost of living, take the food out of children’s mouths, ask the pensioners to suffer even more hardship and push others over the edge of the breadline. This is precisely what a Donald Trump attitude council would adopt. Why stop at fuel tax? Why not introduce a tourist tax, a student tax, a tenant tax, or any other method you can think of to extort money from the public. I am sure it would all be welcomed with open arms. Natalie Whales – I live in Christchurch and was in the east side when the major earthquakes were happening and I personally think that all of Christchurch have gone through enough without having a fuel tax added as well. I know that the city council has some big bills to deal with in regards to repair of roads and buildings in Christchurch but we have already been hit with quite significant rate increases. Our rates have increased by at least $200 a quarter since the earthquakes and our wages have not increased to meet that, but we still have to pay them. I also object to the city council having an “art fund” and using that to put statues in the Avon River that we didn’t get asked if wanted them in the first place and these statues have also cost major amounts of money that I feel personally should be spent on getting our roads back up to a better state, especially in the east side! Let’s get the roads up to standard first and then worry about art and pretty things! Also, could they have less city councillors or pay them less so that, that money can be spent on our roads! I personally think Christchurch people have had enough to deal with without more costs such as a fuel tax. John Logue – Absolutely not. We are currently paying close to 70c per litre in fuel excise tax and then are slugged another 15 per cent on top. I have just topped up my car and paid over $12 in tax! The fuel excise tax already has provision to be spent on roading. Tell Crs Keown and Clearwater to stick their tax right up where the sun don’t shine! Chris Buckley – According to the AA about 60c a litre is tax to fix our roads and yet as many people have pointed out our roads are in a shocking state in general. Never mind being compensated for tyres and shocks, what about loosened fillings. It’s not about the amount of money, it’s about the waste of money at all levels of Government. Our leaders pontificate and make promises but ultimately the implementation is left in the hands of tinpot bureaucrats whose agendas don’t necessarily align with what is best for our communities. It’s not just the roads that are suffering. All infrastructure is underfunded at the expense of social spending. If you asked the average Kiwi if they would rather have good roads, safe drinking water, genuine high speed broadband or flowers in the roundabouts and pretty flags hanging from the lamp posts. What do you think they would say? Karla Mccreath – If they would fix it properly the first time there wouldn’t be an issue. Maybe cut back on the billion dollar new library or the stuff we don’t actually need. People are finding it hard to live financially now. Leonie Rich – I think our petrol is already climbing in price. Cut back on other projects. I am a community caregiver and don’t get enough money to cover running my car. Graeme Brown – Quote: “You’d pay a bit extra for your fuel to have really smooth roads that work.” What a joke – even the roads that have been fixed still are not smooth and if they are, they are dug up again within two to three months. Just look at the new bridge that was put in at Wigram Rd, had such a big drop in it that was a joke and this is brand new. Plus fuel in some places in the North Island can be up to 50c cheaper than down here. Linda Dimmock – We’ve recently been to Christchurch. Petrol was dearer, we presumed it was because of the earthquake. As we drove back to Auckland, the petrol got cheaper. Seems Christchurch is already paying more. Ryan Jared – NO! Because we are already paying more than we should . . . so what are they doing with all that extra money? Taxing fuel, taxing cigarettes might as well start taxing all food including fruit and vegetables. Oh yeah, and alcohol too! This country is becoming pathetic. Samantha Samiyah-jade Stephens – Aren’t we charged and taxed enough? Petrol is already so high in Christchurch compared to further up. We have a perfectly good port it can come into but instead it comes down from Auckland so we already get charged more. Don’t be so awful on Christchurch people. Rates went up to fix infrastructure – the Government will lose Chch people to other cities the more they penalise them.
