But they are expected to return when work picks up again. Construction work at the University of Otago’s campuses this year was expected to provide Peter Townsend more than 1000 jobs. Meanwhile, Otago Polytechnic had work and construction was booming in Queenstown. Dunedin construction companies said the flow of workers had reversed as the earthquakerebuild work slowed. Cook Brothers Construction Otago and Southern Lakes regional manager Blair McGill said it was seeing more resources coming out of Christchurch. He said that was down to them either wanting a change of scenery or the work slowing. Arrow International southern director Nick Hamlin said the company had noticed some staff who had shifted to Christchurch were now moving back. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN “Some of the big projects aren’t coming through as fast as what was hoped.” Higgs Construction construction manager Dave Freeman said although his staff had not been leaving, he had heard of others heading south. He said construction workers went where the work was. “Most people that did come for the rebuild are the people who would do that. That’s just what they don’t mind doing.” Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said the construction sector was fluid. “There’s a lot going on further south, but there’s also a lot going on up north. You’re going to get people moving around. It’s not a surprise.” However, he said the construction workers would head back when the opportunities manifested themselves in Christchurch again. Mr Townsend said what had been done in the central city over the past two years was “impressive.” “Of course, we could have done things faster, but you can never do things fast enough.” By the end of this year, people would get a good view of what the central city would look like in the future, he said. “2017 will be the year, in my opinion, physical manifestation of the rebuild of the central city will overwhelm the negative sentiment about how long it’s taken.” - Additional reporting Otago Daily Times Youth will be questioned over attack • By Andrew King DETECTIVES WILL question a youth in connection with a vicious beating under the Moorhouse Ave overbridge. A member of the public gave police the name of a man after CCTV footage was released on Tuesday of four youths near where the attack occurred. A 53-year-old man is recovering in Christchurch Hospital after he was thrown to the ground and kicked in the head by a man who was with the group. He sustained serious – but not life threatening – head injuries. “I am confident I now know who that male we are looking for is and we will be speaking with him as soon as possible,” Detective Brad Greenstreet said yesterday. Police briefly spoke to the victim but have not conducted a full interview. “At this stage, we are still piecing together just what happened in the lead up to the attack,” he said. He said there was a minor confrontation before the attack, but could not comment on exactly what was said.
