Fashion colours in
home furnishings
There is plenty of colour choice for home interiors
however, once chosen stick to your theme.
For a comfortable feel, earthy natural
colours and textures in sepia tones of clays
and soft sheepskin beiges complimented
by muted pastels are ideal. Alternatively,
contrast ethereal greys with yellows,
cobalt, soft blues, violet, purple or pastels
like peachy pink, rose, or mint.
Earthy brown-based taupes, greens
and greys offer a composed effect.
Layer these as a backdrop for furniture
pieces, cushions, runners and artwork
that incorporate, soft blue greens, teals,
magenta or touches of gold. Soft aqua
walls trimmed with darker shades will
also set-off contemporary furniture.
A traditional atmosphere will come
from regimental and uniform colours
like black, navy, tan and deep greens. Lift
these with brighter colours.
Black and white combinations are also
still in vogue. Try contrasting white with
dark greys or deep blues, rather than
black. They will attract the eye and make
a statement.
Neutral colour schemes are enhanced
with a painted or wallpaper feature wall.
It will not dominate and will provide a
degree of separation in open plan areas.
Choose the wallpaper then the paint for
the other walls, door trim, skirtings and
accessories, drawing the colours out of the
wallpaper or blending with it.
For a décor that reflects confidence
and vibrancy, choose more dramatic
colours like greens, bluer greens, yellows,
pinks, oranges, mandarin red and violet,
individually or together. These may be
within wallpaper on a feature wall or
one-off pieces such as a patchwork chair,
paisley cushions, throws, vases, or wall
hangings.
Colour of the year is purple for fashion
wear and home interiors. It signifies
strength and stability while softer violet
is modern and sentimental. Both work in
the rooms we play in and those we relax
in.
Contrast ethereal greys with
colours such as soft blues.
Earthy natural tones create a
comfortable feel.
Violet is modern and
sentimental.
More dramatic colours can be
introduced in one-off pieces.
