The Meaning of Easter
Fluffy rabbits, baby chicks, candy hunts and coloured eggs
represent the images of Easter. Beautifully decorated baskets
filled with a variety of chocolates create lifelong memories for
children, while the tantalising aroma of hot cross buns lingers
in the air. For many these thoughts are the first things that
usually come to mind, but they don’t represent the history
behind the reason we celebrate Easter each year.
What exactly is the meaning of Easter and why does the world
recognize and celebrate this historic event?
Easter is the first major holiday of the New Year and represents
a major religious overtone for many.
Easter is the holiday that commemorates the central event
of the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus Christ three
days after his death by crucifixion. All major branches of
Christianity observe the holiday. Easter occurs the Sunday
after Good Friday and is the centerpiece of the Christian faith.
The religious history behind the Easter weekend shows
evidence that Christians originally celebrated the resurrection
of Christ every Sunday, with observances including scripture
readings, psalms, partaking of the Eucharist and kneeling
prayers.
At some point within the first two centuries, it because
customary to celebrate Easter only one day each year. Many
of the religious observances of Easter were taken from the
Jewish Passover.
