z The Star 23 Gardening Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Thursday June 8 2017 GARDENING ADVICE with $80 PRIZE PACK! We have a town section and wish to plant an apple and a QUESTION plum tree. To have fruit producing over a long time we are thinking of planting grafted trees with two varieties on each tree. However, we have heard of back to back planting where a tree of each variety is planted beside each other in the same hole. This would be slightly more expensive. Which system is best? Do Gala and Pacifi c Rose apples complement each other or should we plant Gala and Braeburn? What about Santa Rosa and Omega plums? Today’s winning question came from Wendy Holden. Congratulations! A double grafted tree is far more preferable ANSWER than planting two single trees side by side. Competition for root space, nutrients and water all work against the second option. With apples, the Gala and Braeburn combination will provide an extended season of picking ripe fruit. Gala commences ripening in mid to late February, while Braeburn (a late apple), ripens in April. Braeburn is also an excellent ‘keeper apple’, therefore as your tree matures and provides plentiful apples, you can successfully store them for eating until early winter. The plum combination you have enquired about is perfect as plums have specifi c pollinators. Fortunately, Santa Rosa pollenates Omega, and Omega pollenates Santa Rosa. Both are superb eating plums and extend the fruiting season with Santa Rosa ripening in January and Omega in February. As plums can grow into very large trees, prune them to a height of three to four metres so the fruit is easily accessible and less prone to ‘bird raiding’. New season apple and plum trees should arrive in local garden centres in the next few weeks. Maybe it’s cheaper and it’s certainly easier to buy from the supermarket. But as many of our customers know, growing your own vegetables is about more than that. Namely, knowing what’s gone on to your food before you eat it, and the sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from growing it yourself. To grow great celery, the first thing you need to do is prepare your soil. Celery likes soil that’s well- drained and sweet (and in a full sun position), so make sure you add lime before planting. If you’re equipped to measure PH levels, the reading should be between five and six. Celery also grows best in a garden that’s raised and filled with potting mix – so if you can make this combination happen, you’re off to a great start. When you’re ready to plant, dig a hole approximately 3cm deep. Pop in your seedling and use compost to create a mound around the plant. This blanches the base of the stems and keeps them tender. The good news is you don’t have to keep mounding like you do with some plants – just keep your celery watered and that should do the trick. Plant each seedling 20 to 25cm apart and continue this process in rows across your garden. Celery grows best this way, making it a good companion plant for dwarf beans, carrots, spring onions, parsley and bok choy. In fact, if you have any of these in your garden and they’re ready to harvest, celery is the perfect replacement plant. Your plants will develop slowly at first, but in about 12 to 14 weeks, your celery should be ready to harvest. SUNNY: Plant celery 20 to 25cm apart in rows across your garden.
