An enthusiastic crowd greeted the international Queen tribute act that is currently touring the country. Giles is an exemplary performer. Exuberant and oozing charisma, he completely won the audience over within opening numbers. Giles has Freddie mannerisms and look off to a tee. Procient on vocals and piano, it's no wonder Freddie Mercury's personal assistant and biographer Peter Freestone has endorsed this show. A dynamo of energy taking full command of the stage and fearlessly invading the audience to interact up close with fans. But Queen isn't all about Freddie - it's the guitar wizardry of Brian May built on the strong foundation of John Deacon (bass) and Roger Taylor (drums). It's A Kind of Magic delivered. e band was tight and played awlessly. Ritchie Baker as Brian nailed it. e total tribute package is impressive. Great sound, costumes, choreography, lights and use of multi-media. OVER the past month Take Me Home : e Music & Life of John Denver starring Dunedin’s Bevan Gardiner has played an astounding 25 shows across 20 centres throughout New Zealand, concluding at the Isaac eatre Royal in Christchurch last night. It’s 20 years this year since John Denver died in a tragic air accident, aged 53 - and judging by last night’s packed audience, his music has not waned in popularity. Presented in a nicely constructed tribute show incorporating live performances of JD classics with archival lm footage, Bevan and band presented a beautiful tribute to the icon. Adept on guitar with an uncanny vocal likeness to JD, Bevan gave a faultless performance that was enhanced by regular singing partner, Georgie Daniell. Directed by Vancouver’s Davey Walker on keyboards, a highly procient band made up of Sydney based Darryl Walker (bass) and Glen Bain (lead guitar), along with Christchurch’s own Allan Cattermole (drums), provided impeccable backing and harmonious vocals. A must-see for any John Denver fan.
