A festive fun summer
With lots of last minute things to do,
this time of year can be a rush, completing
Christmas present and food shopping,
along with packing for a planned holiday
away.
Remember to take time out to chill and
enjoy this festive time of the year, making
the most of the opportunities to share a
little Christmas spirit with others.
If looking for that extra special gift or
something unique:
• A Lincoln Christmas Twilight Market
will be held this Thursday, 21 December
(4-7pm) along with the usual market on
Saturday, 23 December (10am-1pm).
• The West Melton Market will be on this
Saturday, 22 December (9am-12noon).
Entertaining the children may also
include checking out the Christmas lights
adorning many homes as well as a visit to
the Seawards’ Christmas light display in
Shands Road, open every night 8.30pm to
midnight, up to the 30 December.
You might also take the children to
the Darfield Jail Santa’s Grotto. You can
take a photo of the little ones with Santa
from 3-6pm tomorrow this Thursday,
21 December and Friday, 22 December,
or 10am-12noon this Saturday, 23rd
December.
The family will enjoy cooling off at the
Selwyn Aquatic Centre where a pool party
with games, prizes, music and inflatables
will add to the fun this Wednesday, 20
December (2-4pm). The local pools at
Darfield, Sheffield and Southbridge will
also be open over the holiday period for
a refreshing swim while there are lots of
other places to enjoy a dip like the Pegasus
Bay or peninsula’s beaches.
Until the end of January, children up to
12 years can also participate in the district’s
libraries Selwyn Summer Reading BINGO,
which sets reading tasks that will add
another dimension to the holiday period
and have them chilling out with their head
in a book or other written
material.
For a fun day out at
the trots, there are two
events scheduled for the
Interislander Summer
Festival Motukarara Trots,
on Friday, 29 December and
Sunday, 28 January (both
beginning at 10am).
In the city, international
cricket games will be held on
Saturday, 23 December and
on Boxing Day, 26 December
while the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup will
run from 13 January to 3 February.
The Ingham’s Lazy Sundays are on again
in 2018, from 7 January to 25 February
(3.30-5pm) on the Botanic Garden’s
Archery Lawn.
The whole family might also enjoy a day
flying kites on Saturday, 20 January (1pm-
4pm) at New Brighton Beach. On your way
there, check out the Street Prints Ōtautahi,
a free street art festival of new murals in
and around Christchurch and call into the
Margaret Mahy Family Playground.
Of course the World Buskers Festival will
be on again, 18-28 January, with amusing
entertainment, 11am to 11pm each day.
With even more on offer over summer
there are fun times in store to extend out
the festive season.
