Canterbury retirees among most
Canterbury’s retirees
are some of the
most active in the
country, according
to a new report. It
also looks at what
sports Cantabrians
are playing. Bridget
Rutherford reports
EVERY WEDNESDAY morning
a group of cyclists meet at The
Princess Margaret Hospital car
park, jump on their bikes and
head to Tai Tapu.
They call themselves the
Magpies.
Some are doctors on their day
off from work, others are nurses
or mums. But most are retirees.
Graeme Milner and Roy
Pemberton started the group
about 20 years ago. It has grown
to have more than 50 members.
Mr Milner, a veteran cyclist
who represented New Zealand
in 1964, said he loved it for the
fitness and the social aspect.
The 87-year-old is one of the
oldest in the group – but he says
age is no barrier and anyone is
welcome. He reckons he will
keep doing it until he is into his
90s.
“It’s the best exercise you can
do. You just have to say it’s going
to take you a wee bit longer than
it used to.”
Sport Canterbury’s draft
Spaces and Places Report which
looked at sport in the region
and the facilities available, said
retirees did more cycling, golf,
bowls, aquarobics than the
national average.
Young retirees aged 65-75
were more likely to take part
in cycling, golf, bowls or
aquarobics.
Twenty-seven per cent cycled,
19 per cent played golf, 10 per
cent did aquarobics, while six per
cent played indoor bowls.
In Canterbury, the number of
young retirees who cycled was
eight per cent higher than the
national average, golf was 11 per
cent above, aquarobics was eight
per cent higher and indoor bowls
was four per cent above.
For those aged 75 and over, the
number of golfers was four per
cent above the national average,
outdoor bowls was five per cent
higher and indoor bowls was
three per cent above.
Mr Milner said he thought
more retirees were getting into
cycling because it was good to
stay healthy. Once the group got
to Tai Tapu they stopped for a
coffee and a chat, he said.
Jeff Greenep, 80, agreed. He
cycles about four times a week.
He said he has been doing it
since he was a kid.
Cycling was the second most
popular activity for those aged 16
and over. The most popular was
walking, at 67 per cent.
That was followed by cycling
with 36 per cent and swimming
at 33 per cent.
Twenty-four per cent did
equipment-based exercise, such
as going to the gym, while 20 per
cent went running.
Cricket and hunting rounded
out the top 20, with about six per
cent taking part in both.
For five to 10-year-olds who
were surveyed, swimming was
the most popular activity at 90
per cent, followed by biking,
athletics, gymnastics and cross
country.
In the 11-14 and 15-18 age
brackets, running took top spot,
followed by swimming, athletics,
basketball and biking.
