Fire rages, homes at risk
active, major sports report shows
The draft Spaces and Places
Report was prepared by Sport
Canterbury to outline the current
and planned sporting facilities
following the September 2010
and February 2011 earthquakes.
As part of the report, it looked
at how each code was impacted
following the quakes.
Sports such as tennis, athletics,
bowls, golf, squash, cricket and
surf life saving had seen a decline
in memberships.
Meanwhile, badminton,
football, hockey, netball, rowing,
rugby, league, swimming, touch
and waterpolo had gone the other
way.
Certain sports with less
facilities were analysed and
interviewed to see what
developments were under way
and how they had been impacted
following the quakes.
Swimming appeared to be the
worst hit because facilities such
as QE II and Centennial Pool,
were damaged or destroyed after
the quakes.
In 2010 the swimming
membership was 1565. That
dropped to 387 in 2011.
In 2016 there were 1585
registered swimmers, back up to
pre-quake levels, although that
ON THE RISE: The number of people playing football in
Canterbury has steadily increased over the last 10 years.
only included those who were
members, not people who went
for leisurely swims.
Planning and construction of
aquatic facilities were under way,
such as Eastern Recreation and
Aquatic Facility and the South
West Leisure Centre in Hornby.
However, the Metro Sport
Facility’s future is unclear,
after new Minister for Greater
Christchurch Regeneration
Megan Woods on Tuesday
announced the Government
would scrap the preferred
contractor to get it back on track.
It came after a “thorough
review” found the budget had
blown out by $75 million. A
review would be done to see what
the options were, which could
include combining it with the
proposed multi-use arena.
The report said bowls had also
taken a hit.
The sport had 3206 members
last year – 70 per cent of the
number it had in 2010.
Rowing had grown to 987
last year, league had been
stable, while tennis had steadily
declined in membership to 6063
last year.
Volleyball had suffered due to
lack of playing space, the report
said, and yachting and BMX had
remained relatively stable.
Meanwhile, football
registrations had steadily
increased over the past decade.
Last year, there were 13,855.
Currently, Mainland Football’s
base is at ASB English Park. But
there have been discussions about
moving it to the soon to be built
Nga Puna Wai.
A gap was identified for
speed skating facilities. The
current Alpine Ice Sports and
Entertainment Centre does not
have a full size rink so it could
not hold national championships.
Hockey had a membership
of 4507 last year. But the report
said it was limited by turf
availability.
Currently, teams are able to
play at Nunweek and Marist
Parks, as well as Waimakariri
Hockey Turf in Rangiora.
Nga Puna Wai will have two
artificial turfs when it opens next
year.
The facility was part of a list of
planned or proposed facilities for
Christchurch.
It joined the the multi-use
arena, the reinstatement of
Christchurch Adventure Park,
the Christchurch Squash Club
upgrade at The Cashmere Club,
the Eastern Sport and Recreation
Centre, South West Leisure
Centre, a badminton facility
in Wigram, and Celebration
Church’s multi-purpose indoor
sports facility.
Those proposed included a
multi-sport marine venue at
Naval Point, National Equestrian
Facility at McLean’s Island,
an upgrade for Denton Park’s
velodrome, the Christchurch
School of Gymnastics’ new
facility and the upgrade of
Olympia Gym Sports.
