28 STYLE | advertising feature CREATING GREAT SPACES Jeff Merrin from Lume Design and Melissa Merrin from Interiors by Lume share their advice on the importance of collaboration in creating great design. Creating a home to be proud of is something we all aspire to do. Owner of Lume Design, Jeff Merrin, believes creating great spaces is all about communication and collaboration. “We believe that great design is a process of communication, inspiration, experience and restraint. Finding a design partner that can understand what you want and what you are trying to achieve is key to creating a great design.” However, it’s not just the relationship between client and designer that is key. It is also the working relationship between the various industry professionals that can dictate the end result. “It’s really important to have a good working relationship with other industry professionals – ones that share your ethos when it comes to design. For us, the key to creating a great design is one that not only celebrates the architecture but also creates a functional and liveable space for our clients,” says Jeff. It helps, then, that award-winning interior designer and owner of Interiors by Lume, Melissa Merrin, shares the same ethos. “Some of the best results we have delivered to our clients have come from working together. We understand each other and what the other is trying to achieve. At the same time, we are able to challenge each other and bring a fresh perspective to the other’s design,” says Melissa. By working collaboratively they create designs that celebrate the architecture and enhance the liveability of each space. Jeff brings an exceptional attention to detail and functionality while Melissa brings an eye for design and style. The end result is beautifully crafted design that combines function with beauty. “Clients put a lot of trust in us to deliver a design that meets their needs. Being able to bring a design to life for them is imperative. You need to bring your clients on the journey with you. As a professional you can envisage what a space can potentially look like but that’s not always the case for some clients. Giving them inspiration and sharing ideas is really important and instrumental to the process.” No matter whether it’s starting from scratch, remodelling or upgrading, design starts with a great relationship.
