Many Christchurch people will remember
Kavanagh House in Winchester as a
wonderful stopover en route to the south.
They will therefore be delighted that new
owners have reopened the imposing house
as a café and garden centre under the new
name of Miaflora.
After relocating from Perth where they
owned an award-winning garden centre,
John Grieve and Bruce Wright chose the
region because John had family in nearby
Ashburton. Kavanagh House appeared in
the pages of a real estate magazine and a
viewing confirmed it epitomised their wish
list: appealing character, business potential,
close to population centres and on a main
travel route.
As John is a pastry chef and Bruce is
a qualified horticulturalist, their shared
aim was to provide quality café food
throughout the day, either inside the neo-
Tudor house (c1910) or in the adjoining
landscaped courtyards. In addition, a
garden centre flourishes in the old stables,
and a gift shop and gallery on-site will allow
them to source and show the work of local
artists, says John.
The garden centre has a large selection
of garden supplies, plants, ornaments,
garden features and items suitable for gifts
or decoration. Bruce also stocks the types of
plants that grow well in the local climate like
NZ natives, rhododendrons, camellias and
other cottage garden varieties.
Offering a varied lunch menu with an
emphasis on fresh, local produce and all-day
coffee and cake, the licensed café is open
from 9am to 5pm, Thursdays to Sundays and
on public holiday Mondays.
While bookings for groups up to 24 are
advised, “We especially cater for ‘call-in’
customers looking for a relaxed lunch in
pretty surroundings, or a welcome break in
their journey with time to browse,” says John.
Ideally located for guests to enjoy Timaru’s
attractions, Panorama Motor Lodge is
opposite Caroline Bay and just metres from
the start of the shopping precinct. There are
also three restaurants in the same block for
those who prefer to “eat out”.
Panorama Motor Lodge comprises
19 units in total with a variety of
studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom
accommodations. All units are self-catering,
and one unit is specifically designed with
facilities for the disabled.
Comprehensive on-site guest facilities
and services make the property ideal for
both leisure or business travellers and
include: breakfast service, a gym, sauna and
spa pool, off-street parking, a guest laundry,
cot and highchair, video, fax, wireless
internet and a small meeting unit.
Panorama Motor Lodge offers value for
money with excellent standards of comfort
and friendly, helpful service.
