Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
Christchurch
Central MP
Duncan
Webb writes
about the
issues he
plans to
tackle in the
coming year.
Plus that big
news from the Beehive
HAPPY NEW year.
I had a great break over summer
with my family – I hope you
managed to as well.
It’s been an intense few months
settling in as your new MP.
I am always surprised by the
many and varied issues people
come to me with.
Two pubs have asked for my
help with disruption caused by
road works (I am helping one by
writing this in the bar).
More seriously, it is really
important that we minimise the
disruption to local businesses and
residents as rebuild and other
work continues – communities
can’t be put on hold for construction.
I am also determined to work
with the city council and others
to effectively address the issue
of street-based sex workers in St
Albans.
The Ombudsman’s Office has
said it will investigate whether
the approach of the city council
to the matter is appropriate. We
need a solution which is fair to
the residents as well as these
workers.
Transport is also critical, especially
for north Christchurch.
You may have seen the road
cones on Cranford St indicating
work on the Northern Corridor –
so avoid that route if you can.
This will be great for people
travelling to or from north of
Christchurch, however, the council
will no doubt have to consider
steps to avoid congestion around
Bealey Ave.
Helping people with problems
with Government or other agencies
is an important part of my
role.
I am getting lots of inquiries
over EQC and insurance issues,
but also inquiries about education,
immigration, city council
issues, financial hardship, accommodation
and many more.
There are a lot of people who
need a hand in navigating how to
address these issues. I am really
PLANNING: Duncan Webb
said one of the issues he
will stay on top of this year is
traffic impact on the north of
the city.
lucky to also have two awesome
people assisting me with this
work, Sonya and Nicolasa.
Lastly, as I write this, I have
received a text from my boss –
the Prime Minister, who is letting
MPs know that she is having a
baby.
A baby is always fantastic news
– and what a great demonstration
of the fact that work and babies
do mix.
She is, of course, lucky that
Clarke can be a full-time dad. I
will give him some hints on how
not to do it when I see him soon.
BEFORE AND AFTER: Photos taken before and after plants
were stolen show how barren the scented garden has become.
Readers respond to the
article regarding a spate of
floral thefts at St Albans’
Abberley Park
Mary-ann Thorne – There
is someone in Christchurch who
is starting a garden. Between the
plants stolen out of the Smile
Dial garden in New Brighton,
the St Albans garden and all
the new plantings stolen out
of the new garden beds along
Worcester St, it is the only thing
that makes any sense. I was not
aware of this happening until
late last year when someone stole
my bird bath in the middle of
the day, right off the front lawn.
When I spoke to other people in
the neighbourhood they told me
about this sort of thing happening.
So now we just have to keep
an eye out for a new white and
pink garden with fruit trees and
a bird bath. Some people suck.
Simon Hunter – Don’t make
me rant.
Fendalton, Waimairi and
Harewood Ward readers
respond to the article asking
where they would like
their $100 million in rates
spent
Harry and Monica
Verdellen – We live in Blighs
Rd but our son lives on Bryndwr
Rd. When we visit him, my wife
and I find it very hard to get
out, or in the car, because of the
state and camber of the road. We
are both in our 80s so we would
like something done here.
