The Star Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Thursday February 1 2018 13 Our People Rhett Mason From tennis ace to surgeon Rhett Mason decided a professional tennis career was out of his reach – so he became a surgeon instead. He spoke to Andrew King about working with top-level rugby players and making the front page of The Star So Rhett, tell me about your day job? Well, I am a full-time surgeon, specialising in foot and ankle surgery, and I also do a bit of hip and knee replacements. I work both in the public and private sector and see a variety of different people, including some top sports stars in the All Blacks and Crusaders as well as everyday people. It must have taken a while to become a surgeon? I spent six years at medical school, then a couple of years as a house surgeon before becoming a registrar surgeon for about eight years. Then you head overseas for a few years of experience. All up, it takes about 14-16 years and then you become a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Along the way, you decide what you will specialise in. Why did you want to become a surgeon? It was a long time ago. I decided to do it and I was interested in sports injuries. So it just went from there. You must have a steady hand, or is that a myth about surgeons? Most people think they have to be very dexterous. It is true, but most surgery is thinking things through in your head. The most important part is making good decisions before, during and after. Ninety per cent of people could do the manual side of things when trained, but it is the mental side of it that is crucial. Tell me about your first surgery, were you nervous? Very. Everyone is very nervous when you start. I think my first was removing an appendix. But you are always supervised, albeit from a distance. I heard you wanted to try your hand as a professional tennis player, what changed? When I was 18, I spent six months touring around Europe playing tennis. I went over to France with the New Zealand team to play in the French junior champs, held the second week of the French Open. But I wasn’t selected to playing in the singles draw. They went with Bruce Derlin and Mark Lewis. I was on a Roland-Garros practice court and beside me was Ivan Lendl . He was the top junior in the world at that stage. I was in awe of his training and the intensity of his all-day session and thought to myself ‘this might not be for me’. I also lost a match to Mats Wilander – who won seven grand slam titles – when he was several years younger than me in Turin, Italy. I thought I shouldn’t be losing to him, but it turns out he is one of the greats. So I decided to study medicine. I still play for Elmwood in the division one inter-club. He won $50 and one of his favourite players, Fergie McCormick, signed his scrapbook. So becoming a surgeon in your mind at that point was easier than becoming a professional tennis player after seeing Lendl? I didn’t think I was good enough. Tennis is a tough gig. Put it this way, if you are the 300th best surgeon in the world you are doing alright, but if you are the 300th best tennis player in the world, you’re making no money. So back to some of these top stars you have worked on, can you tell me about any of them? Can’t really say because of confidentiality. I have operated on a number of former rugby players from 1960 and 1970 from Canterbury. I have operated on some big name All Blacks you might have heard of, but I wouldn’t like to breach their privacy. Brilliant. Do you have more to do now as the modern game gets more and more physical? We are seeing a bit more, but rugby has become so fast and physical and the size of the players has increased. But now we are well advanced when it comes to techniques and players are way more committed to their rehabilitation programmes compared to 10-15 years ago. Do you keep in touch with any of the players? Just professionally. If you see them out and about we have a chat. But not socially. So you have been interested in rugby for quite some time? Most of my life. Actually, seeing as you are from The Star, I have a bit of a story about the paper from back in the 70s. Do tell? When I was nine, I was on the front page of The Star after a journalist came out to the foyer in Kilmore St and saw me entering a competition to name the All Blacks squad for an international tour in 1970. At the time he asked me what I was doing. I told him I was picking the squad and he took a photo of me. I ended up being first equal with another guy. I picked 29 of the 30 players going on tour. He got a three-month trip following the team around and I got $50. I was quite happy with that. I was the wealthiest kid in the class. Let’s get back to your tennis days. Tell me what some of the highlights were? I made the Canterbury men’s team when I came back from overseas and played for them for about 10 years. That was great fun, and I made plenty of good friends. I enjoyed it as it was not a job. We won the Wilding Shield in 1979 and 85. It was the first time since 1939 we had won it and the captain of the 1939 team was watching it. He died a few month later and had his ashes sprinkled on centre court at Wilding Park, which is quite an honour. Now your daughters are carrying on the tennis legacy. Tell me about them? Yes, both of them, Abby, 14, and Emma, 11, have been at the nationals lately and did alright. I taught them both how to play. My wife Rachel and I play against the girls in family games which are a lot of fun. Nice. Who is the best in the family? That would be Abby at the moment. Who is the worst? That is always evolving. I can’t say any more than that. Is your wife also a surgeon? No. She works at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital as a specialist obstetric ultrasound technician. We met at Christchurch Hospital and just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary on Thursday. Congratulations. One last question. What is better, rugby or tennis in your opinion? I think tennis because you can play it for a lifetime. You can play rugby for a long time, but it is different. But I love both.
