Fire rages, homes at risk
Chlorination: ‘No choice’
LAST WEEK we
made the decision to
temporarily chlorinate
our drinking water,
something we haven’t
done city-wide since
the earthquakes.
No one wanted to
make that decision, but the truth
is that if we hadn’t done so, the
medical officer of health would
have made it for us. As soon as
we lost our secure status due to
the state of our well-heads, there
was no choice.
There are a lot of questions
being asked about how this
could have occurred, and quite
rightly so. It would be easy
to say the engineers are more
risk-averse due to the Havelock
North incident, but actually,
maybe the standards weren’t
sufficiently rigorous in the
past (after all, our well-heads
didn’t get into that condition
overnight). And maybe Havelock
North has been the wake-up call
we all needed.
We resolved last week that
the chief executive would
commission an external inquiry
so we can ensure this doesn’t
happen again and, in the
meantime, we have prioritised
the urgent sealing of the wellheads
so that we can get our
Lianne Dalziel
secure status back as soon as we
possibly can and get the chlorine
out of our drinking water.
It’s a big year this year with
the development of the Long
Term Plan 2018-28, which is
your opportunity to influence
the direction and spending plans
for the city. Although it is a 10-
year plan, it is accompanied by a
30-year infrastructure strategy,
which will highlight the reality
that – although there has been a
lot done in terms of earthquake
recovery – there is still much
more to do.
This latest issue of the wellheads
has highlighted the
importance of getting the basics
right before we fully commit
to major projects the city may
or may not be able to afford. In
setting our priorities, we need to
maintain the capacity to respond
to issues that arise, like further
earthquakes, floods or fire, while
at the same time, being able
to take advantage of any new
opportunities that emerge.
We won’t solve this without
your input if we want to keep
rates increases under control,
and we do. Given what still
needs to be done, we can’t get
back to the council’s inflation
rate yet, but this council wants
the average increase capped at
5.5 per cent and falling over the
term of the Long Term Plan.
This will require discipline,
and it will mean prioritising
what we must have and putting
aside what doesn’t stack up. I
hope you will participate when
the draft Long Term Plan goes
out for public consultation in
March. •More Viewpoint, p19
Christchurch’s water will
be temporarily chlorinated
to prevent the risk of
contamination
Jimmy Le Comte –
I would rather drink
chlorinated water
than suffer what
happened in the
North Island. Our
medical officer from
Christchurch Hospital
advised us to drink
chlorinated water. I
would prefer to take
his advise than know-alls that
have no medical certifications.
Also, water in plastic bottles can
suffer from leaching.
Beverly Jackson – When
I moved to Christchurch more
than 40 years ago, the water here
was the best I had ever drank. I
still drink tap water and I’ve never
become sick. What annoys me
is why hasn’t the council spent
some of our huge rates on maintain
our pipes and water supply?
Surely it must be budgeted for as
we all know nothing lasts forever.
It had better be temporary. We
also deserve to know just what
they mean by temporary. We
want our pure water back asap.
I feel angry about this. Council
needs to get off their backsides.
Nicki Howe – Bugger, there
goes my skin again . . . ended up
with hospital treatment for three
months last time they did this to
our water. Hope they keep their
word and it is only temporary.
Helen Johnstone – It
had better be temporary.
I’d actually rather take
the risk of being sick than
have to drink chlorinated
water. Bottled water will
be added to the supermarket
bill.
Kelli McKay – Define
temporary. How about
putting a date to when you will
have this all sorted so you can
stop chlorinating the water.
Shona Taylor – Looks like I
will be drinking bottled water for
a year. Chlorinated water upsets
my stomach, always get it when I
go to Auckland and drink the tap
water up there. Guess it’s got to
be done though. As long as they
stop it when they get it sorted.
Simone Reddington –
Don’t drink bottled water, too
much plastic waste, just buy a
water filter.
Jennifer Bennett – I’d
rather have chlorine than E coli.
Liz Richardson – As long as
it’s not permanent.
