Memories are made of this Congratulations to all those who were born in the 1930s; 1940s; 1950s; 1960s or before. How did we manage to survive? 1. We survived being born to mothers who smoked, drank and lived in houses made of asbestos. 2. Our mothers took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, processed meat, and tuna from a can and didn’t get tested for diabetes or cancer. 3. Then our next trauma, our baby cots were covered in bright coloured lead based paint. 4. There were no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or doors on medicine cabinets. 5. When we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes. 6. We would ride in our parents’ cars with no seat belts or air bags and sometimes in the back of a Ute. 7. We drank water from the garden hose or a tap and not from a bottle. 8. Takeaway food was limited to fish and chips. No pizza shops; McDonalds; KFC or Subway. 9. Even though shops closed at 6pm and didn’t open at weekends, somehow we didn’t starve to death. 10. We often shared a soft drink with friends from one bottle and no-one actually died from this. 11. We ate loads of biscuits; white bread; and real butter and drank soft drinks with loads of sugar in it and we were not overweight or hyperactive. 12. Our teachers used to hit us with canes; straps and gym shoes. 20. We had fresh milk from the cow to drink with masses of cream. 21. Small bottles of milk with cardboard tops were delivered to schools for us to have at break time.
