Shoppers got more than they bargained for at the Beth Hillel B’nai Enumah annual rummage sale, on Jan. 14 and 15, discovering that the dollars spent went to numerous charitable missions, brightening the lives of those in need. Proceeds earned are donated to the sisterhood committee, who use a portion of the earnings to purchase Thanksgiving baskets for over 20 local families who have fallen on hard times. Remaining funds are also used to host Hanukkah luncheons for local senior centers. The sale has been a significant part of the synagogue’s history, and many involved explained that it began over 50 years ago, first held in member’s homes. “I had a two-car garage and lived nearby, so I was originally asked to host the rummage sale and was happy to do so,” Bernice Bossov said. “From there, other families also hosted the sale, until it finally moved to the synagogue, and it has been held here ever since. It’s a wonderful tradition that benefits so many.” Elly Rousso explained that she has been involved in organizing the sale since 1980, noting how the entire process runs like a well-oiled machine, thanks to the effort of rummage sale leaders. “The rummage sale has grown over the years and continues to run smoothly each year,” Rousso said. “Everyone knows their roles, allowing us to gather, sort and display all the items within a two-week time period, which is pretty quick. I really enjoy being part of the rummage sale because it brings people, from all walks of life, to [Beth Hillel B’nai Enumah]. I enjoy meeting all the people who walk through our doors. I also want to give credit to our rummage sale chair, Adrienne Schaye, who did so much for this years; event, only to miss due to the flu.” From start to finish, the day is run by 50 volunteers, who sort, organize and display hundreds of items from home goods and housewares to kids clothing and toys. Cashier Joan Meyers said that clothing was a big seller at this year’s sale. “Every year I work the cash register and I really enjoy it,” Meyers said. “The rummage sale is a tradition so many of us look forward too. This year, I’ve really noticed how clothing has been very popular. People seem to really enjoy the boutique, where shoppers find our higher end items. Men’s clothing has also been a big hit.” Books too were a popular seller, bringing joy to volunteer Karen Thirman. “Our book sales have been great this year,” she said. Nothing makes me happier than knowing so many families can experience the joy a good book can bring, for so little cost here at our rummage sale.”
