That question has haunted the minds of great philosophers since Plato roamed the earth. I’ve heard solid arguments from both camps, but neither has given ground in recent years. Still, the answer, if you ask me, is obvious. Nachos can, if done well, stand alone as a meal of their own, and the guacamole nachos ($9.75) at Javier’s Mexican Restaurant prove my point. The dish includes tortilla chips spread with beans, melted cheese, sour cream, jalapenos and, of course, plenty of guacamole. If you crave protein, Javier’s also serves chicken and ground beef nachos for the same price. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Upgrade to ribeye steak ($11.95), steak fajita ($12.95) or fiesta ($10.75) nachos, or keep it simple with plan cheese nachos ($6.75). And, if you’re foolish enough to order your nachos as an appetizer, I’d suggest pairing them with the tacos tipicos Mexicanos, three tacos served on soft flour or soft corn tortillas with lettuce and tomatoes, or the fajitas, a healthy serving of sizzling fajitas mixed with green peppers, tomatoes and grilled onions served with a side of guacamole and pico de gallo. Story by Chris Pullam, Contributing Editor Nachos supreme with carne asada — Once Upon A Bagel, Winnetka Sure, Once Upon A Bagel is a local favorite for their large selection of breakfast favorites and endless lunch options from hot dogs and club sandwiches to Buffalo wings and salads, but did you know the restaurant also has a Mexican grill menu that offers just as many yummy options as well? As comfortably tucked away in downtown Hubbard Woods as Once Upon A Bagel is, so exists the Mexican fare, nestled in between the dozens of other menu options. One of the restaurant’s favorite south-of-the-border plates includes the nachos supreme. At $10.50, diners can order a snack fit to be a filling meal, including tortilla chips piled high with refried beans, pico de gallo, melted cheese, cilantro and tomato served alongside scoops of sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo and lime wedges. But just when the nachos sounded appetizing enough, diners can add in their choice of meat from an array of options, including carne asada (steak), beef (ground or barbacoa), veggie (chile relleno), pork (barbacoa), chicken (barbacoa) or Mexican sausage (chorizo). Truly, the nachos supreme will fill you up for the rest of the day, but if you venture in with a few friends and decide to share the plate as an appetizer, other Mexican options that would pair nice with the nachos include the tamale plate ($8.95), tortas ($9.95) and chilaquiles con huevos ($9.25). The downtown eatery is a literal Northbrook landmark, as it resides in the oldest commercial building in the village. Residents have flocked to the community staple for its classic, wide-ranging menu since 2001, which includes its signature colossal nachos appetizer. And, true to its straightforward nature, the name provides the perfect story of this dish. The Landmark Inn’s colossal nachos are just that — a massive serving fit to satisfy any nacho-lovers’ taste buds. This hearty nacho offering ($10.95, $12.95 with steak) comes with your choice of chili, steak or seasoned chicken and is topped with cheese, sour cream, guacamole, beans, jalapeno peppers and tomatoes. Those looking for even more options surely won’t be disappointed as guests can also substitute in steak. If you’re in the mood for a little spice of life, The Landmark Inn’s salsa verde is the perfect complement. And Reinhart’s sentiments are true, you can never really good wrong with this dish. This writer highly recommends this ample portion of nacho goodness. Real Urban BBQ Manager Isabel Wukowitch said sometimes he’ll text his team in the wee hours of the morning with an idea he wants to try. Thus, the BBQ nacho was formed. Real Urban BBQ’s nachos ($9.99) come complete with your choice of meat, nacho cheese, BBQ sauce, pico de gallo, jalapenos, scallions, sliced avocado and sour cream piled high onto a mound of corn tortilla chips.
