Alliance of Early Childhood partners with various organizations Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter The Alliance of Early Childhood encouraged families to bundle up and enjoy the great outdoors during its annual Let’s Play Winter Community Play Day Jan. 27 at Watts Park in Glencoe. The Alliance’s Executive Director Liza Sullivan said the day reinforces the many benefits of unstructured, nature play for all. “In a day and age when families often find themselves running from one activity to another, it’s important for children to go outdoors and immerse themselves in imaginative play in a natural setting,” Sullivan said. “Outdoor play reminds everyone, adults too, of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simplicity that the nature offers.” As luck would have it, Mother Nature, provided plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures Jan. 27 for the event. Children roamed freely around Watts Park, finding joy playing with sticks, climbing on wood blocks, running up and down the hill and swinging on a naturemade swing. Founder of Backyard Nature Center Daniel Kielson and board member Gary Morressey were also present, teaching kids about the behaviors of animals in the winter, all the while, supporting the alliance’s mission. “Our motto is to connect kids and adults with nature,” Kielson said. “There is more and more research coming out, proving that being outdoors lessens anxiety and depression and improves cognitive development. These experiences teach them how to problem solve, take appropriate risks and think creatively.” Representatives from Lincoln Park Zoo gave little ones the chance to play in buckets of dirt, searching for objects, such as sticks and rocks buried beneath the surface. Joel Staffilino, of Glencoe, brought his 3-year-old son, David, who enjoyed digging in the dirt and running around, doing whatever he pleased, while dad enjoyed the sunshine. “It’s really great to get kids outdoors and let them just run, play and have fun,” Staffilino said. “It’s a nice day and I’m also really enjoying the time spent outdoors in the sun and fresh air.” The Glencoe Park District was also present, giving kids the chance to immerse themselves in sensory play. They used a mix of shaving cream and faux snow, allowing kids to make the perfect snowball. Gary Morressey, of Backyard Nature, shows families a pair of deer antlers. “It’s great to host the event and be part of a day with like-minded individuals who share the same belief of unstructured, outdoor play,” said Kaily Belpedio, one of the park district’s assistant early childhood teachers. Representatives from The North Suburban Special Education District — an organization dedicated to helping students become successful, happy adults at home, work and the community — were also in attendance. Their goal was to help parents of children with different abilities navigate the opportunity for unstructured play. “Many parents who have children with different needs and abilities are searching for ways to guide their child through unstructured play, while still keeping it open ended,” said Sue Stolzer, inclusion instructor. “We want all families to feel like they can attend these type of events, so our goal today is to observe, gain insight and offer tips to families who need it.” Interested in more Let’s Play Days?
