Athlete of the Year
Glenbrook South’s Sullivan cruises to victory

Media’s Athlete of the Year competition
look like an easy ace.
The Glenbrook South graduate
and former volleyball player played
catch up early in the competition, but
once he took the lead over New Trier’s
boys swimmer Charlie Scheinfeld,
it was easy sailing the rest of
the way.
Sullivan won the seventh annual
competition with a total of 3,627
votes, edging out Scheinfeld’s
1,901 votes and Loyola Academy
lacrosse’s Brennan Dwyer, who finished
with 1,502 votes. The contest
ran from Jan. 26 to Friday, Feb. 9,
and spanned across 18 different athletes
from six different schools and
eight different sports, ranging from
football to water polo to swimming.
New Trier boys swimming’s Patrick
Gridley finished fourth with
909 votes and Highland Park girls
basketball’s Sydney Ignoffo finished
fifth with 790 tallies.
Sullivan was a major contributor
for the Titans boys volleyball team
that finished 25-12.
He will receive a prize package
that will announced at a later time.

was one of our strongest
events. We just wanted to
go out there and go big or
go home, pretty much.”
Hartley followed Graham
on the vault, who
ended up taking third
place in the event with a
score of 9.575.
“I’m just thrilled,” Gale
said about the overall performance.
“We have two
top vaulters with Jenna
and Sheena and both are
capable of doing a 9.8.
That vault of Jenna’s in a
high-stake meet like this
is just marvelous.”
Like other teams, Glenbrook
North is filled with
young, talented competitors.
While there were ups
and downs at the meet,
coach Julie Holmbeck
was impressed with what
her team brought forth at
the sectional.
“I’m just really proud
of them, honestly they’re
a great bunch of girls to
work with,” Holmbeck
said. “That’s the main thing.
They have a lot of fun working
together and they’re a
very coachable group. If
you’re working with girls
that are coachable, and you
want to be in the gym every
day with them, it makes it
enjoyable for everyone.”
GBN’s Brittany Ullrich
placed second on the bars
(9.375) with a routine that
she has been working for
roughly half the year.
“Obviously I wanted to
do well on everything but
I came in here really, really
wanting to make it on
bars,” she said. “Bring a
senior too (this year), it was
fun to share the experience
with (my teammates).
“I’ve known some of
them for so long, so we’ve
been doing it together for
10 years. So to end like
this, together, is a great
way to end (my career).”
The top five finishers
from each category automatically
advance to the
state meet. At-large qualifiers
will not be announced
until Monday, Feb. 12, according
to the IHSA website.
The state competition
begins Friday, Feb. 16, at
Palatine High School.
