20 | February 15, 2018 | The wilmette beacon news wilmettebeacon.com Neighbors of Kenilworth honors legacy of philanthropist Miller Submitted by The Neighbors of Kenilworth The Neighbors of Kenilworth recently announced a separate philanthropic endeavor to honor Karen Leese Miller, a former president of The Neighbors of Kenilworth who was dedicated to community engagement throughout her lifetime. The giving will support organizations and projects centered on education and volunteerism, as well as families, women and children in need. Miller found great purpose in helping others through her mentoring and volunteer work for numerous non-profit organizations. She left a meaningful impact on countless lives. These included the Junior League of Evanston-North Shore, the Chicago Foundation for Education and the Uweza Bright Futures Program in Africa. “Miller was unwavering in her belief that volunteers could make a real difference and she was terrific at mentoring volunteers,” said Ann Potter, president of Neighbors of Kenilworth. “Her involvement was local, regional and global.” The Neighbors of Kenilworth’s Karen Leese Miller philanthropic effort will ensure that Karen’s vision is sustained through the participation of her sister. Stephanie Emrich; her mother, Georgia Leese; several of Miller’s closest friends who are involved Years with NOK; Ellen Kollar, NOK’s philanthropy chair; and Potter. This group will determine which organizations will receive donations in Miller’s honor and the Board will approve all recommendations. To support this new NOK endeavor, send a check made out to Neighbors of Kenilworth to philanthropy chair, Ellen Kollar, at 206 Cumberland Ave., Kenilworth, Illinois 60043. Please indicate Karen Leese Miller on the memo line of the check. IRS regulations prevent NOK from being a 501(c) 3 charity and consequently donations will not be tax deductible, but please be assured that every single dollar raised will go directly to assist 501 (c) 3 organizations. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Study will consider keeping District 27 students in-house Northbrook School District 27 staff will conduct a study this summer to determine whether it is feasible to keep more students with disabilities in their home schools, according to Superintendent David Kroeze. Currently, the District sends many students with disabilities to nearby schools within the Northern Suburban Special Education District cooperative, or NSSED. The cooperative, which is made up of 18 North Shore Districts, affords schools the option to send students to other schools with programs that better suit their needs. Sending students to other schools effectively meets high educational standards, but it’s also quite expensive for the District. If the District finds that it can run its own programs for students with disabilities at a lower cost than busing them to nearby districts, the Board of Education would have to consider the option of starting new programs at Hickory Point, Shabonee or Wood Oaks. “NSSED is a very valuable partner for us. The designs were created in consultation with the architecture firm Teska Associates. DMP Task Force chair Jon Talty stated that the project should facilitate necessary infrastructure improvements and enhance Winnetka’s commercial competitiveness as retail becomes more experiential. He stressed that village residents should provide input going forward. Talty also emphasized that this project by Winnetkans should primarily be intended for Winnetkans. “Let’s take care of ourselves first before we start worrying about the couple that lives in Downers Grove that’s never been to Winnetka before,” Talty said. Jodi Mariano, of Teska Associates, also helped present the plan. Mariano argued that streetscape and signage improvements, including the expansion of corner bump-outs and the installation of festoon lighting, should be targeted to hotspots where people already congregate, such as the corner of Chestnut Street and Elm Street in front of Peet’s Coffee.
