WIGRAM MP Megan Woods
and Minister of Conservation
Eugenie Sage are seeking
options from government
departments to help address
quarrying issues in Templeton
and Weedons.
It comes after a meeting with
residents last week.
Dr Woods said she and Ms
Sage will be seeking advice on
a variety of options over the
coming week.
“Once we have received
that advice we will update the
residents,” she said.
This follows news that Fulton
Hogan will not be developing
another quarry in spite of
speculation, 115ha in size, on
Dawsons, Maddisons and Jones
I WATCHED the closing holes of the
Australian Women’s Golf Open in
Adelaide on Sunday – from the couch.
Women’s golf has gone ahead in leaps
and bounds in recent years. The putting
has got so much sharper and many players
now can hit 300 yards off the tee.
Burnside High student Juliana Hung (see page 1) is one of our
most promising young players, tomorrow she steps out in the
amateur Asia-Pacific championship in Singapore.
Hung plays for Russley, and will have fellow Cantabrian
Amelia Garvey, 17, as company in Singapore.
The Asia-Pacific championship is a stepping stone for bigger
things. A good tournament for Hung and Garvey will see them
catch the attention of many.
Call for pedestrian crossing
• By Emily O’Connell
HALSWELL residents may
soon be able to walk across
Ensign St “safely” if a pharmacy
owner’s bid for a pedestrian
crossing gets across the line.
Karen Frater is worried someone
will get hurt crossing the
street outside
her Halswell
Pharmacy due
to speeding
vehicles.
“It is a
50km/h road
Mike Mora
but everyone
seems to be in
a hurry these days, I think that
happens on every road, but then
you’ve got a narrow road and
people who are not necessarily
100 per cent well,” she said.
Mrs Frater said many
residents park at the Halswell
Medical Centre and then cross
the road to the pharmacy to get
medication.
She said the street kerb is
“precarious for someone elderly
or with a walking frame.”
There has also been a few “near
misses” and residents have seen
a need for a crossing on the
street.
“So if we could get something
that slows people down in this
area, that would be a bit better,”
Mrs Frater said. She is also
worried about Oaklands School
and The Lighthouse Pre-school
pupils crossing the road.
She expressed her concerns
at a Halswell Residents’
Association meeting last month.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board chairman
Mike Mora, member Ross
McFarlane, and a city council
staff member paid Mrs Frater
a visit to see the problem firsthand.
As a result, Mr Mora raised
the issue at the community
board meeting last week. The
board asked city council staff
to investigate a pedestrian
crossing.
Mrs Frater is pleased with the
progress and the “proactive”
approach from the residents’
Last year, she qualified for the
Auckland.
Hung missed the half-way
However, her five over par was
Garvey also contested the
Bid to get treatment in Russia
• By Emily O’Connell
UPPER Riccarton’s Keryn
Ashworth needs $100,000 for a
treatment which will enable her
to “do the simple things” in life.
The owner of Sharna’s Doggy
Day Care and Dog Grooming
in Hornby has suffered from
multiple sclerosis for more than
10 years.
The disease, which damages
nerve cells in the brain and
spinal cord, causes symptoms
such as numbness, impairment
of speech and muscular coordination,
blurred vision and
severe fatigue.
Ms Ashworth says a
treatment available in Russia
called hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation could change
her life.
“The drugs I’m on at the
moment cost the Government
$50,000 a year. It’s ridiculous,
absolutely ridiculous, and they’re
not working,” she said.
Ms Ashworth said, in the last
five years and especially last year,
her health has deteriorated.
“There is just no drug and
New Zealand doesn’t do HSCT.
They’re not so much against it,
they just want more proof of
long-term results,” she said.
She is planning to go to Russia
CHANGE: Keryn Ashworth hopes a $100,000 treatment
available in Russia will “halt” her multiple sclerosis.
later in the year for treatment.
Natasha Musson and Lisa
Fisher, of Burwood, as well as
Northwood’s Lauren Smith are
also planning to travel to Russia
for the treatment.
The $100,000 will cover return
airfares for herself and her son
Scott, medical costs, accommodation,
and food expenses for
five to seven weeks.
The 62-year-old first learned
about the treatment from a
television programme.
“There’s just no help here [in
New Zealand] basically. I think
it’s the drug companies that
dictate,” Ms Ashworth said.
She said Russia has been
preforming the treatment for 18
years and has had “phenomenal
results.”
But it isn’t a magic cure. Ms
Ashworth says it “halts” the
disease and, in some cases, it can
improve a person’s condition.
And the process isn’t easy
either – when she returns Ms
Ashworth will spend 100 days in
isolation.
She’s both “excited” and “nervous”
about the treatment, but is
remaining realistic and “doesn’t
expect to be able to run a marathon”
afterwards.
Ms Ashworth’s driving
force “is her two gorgeous
granddaughters who are a huge
part of her life.”
“Just recently even to take
them on a normal every day outing
is becoming a near impossibility,”
she said.
Ms Ashworth is getting creative
in her fundraising efforts.
She had a photographer take
pictures of some of the dogs in
her care and is now selling them
for $40 each. More than $4000
has been donated to her cause
through a Givealitte page.
RUSSLEY RD WORKS
The New Zealand Transport
reductions on the overbridge
will be in place for about eight
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
the removal of about 191 trees
within the Sutherlands basins
density, the exact number of
trees to be removed cannot be
determined. The trees will be cut
in stages and as many new trees
will be planted as possible at the
site.
Halswell
Residents’
Association
secretary
David Hawke
talks about
road issues
in the area
People
everywhere are forever
complaining about traffic speed,
but very little actual data ever
comes to light. Who speeds?
When? Is it only those crazy
young people at 2am?
Murray, a friend of mine,
decided to find out, at least for
Halswell’s Aidanfield Drive during
the daytime.
We went through Murray’s radar
data at the January Halswell
Residents’ Association meeting.
Buses and trucks were remarkably
law-abiding. Most cars and
contractors were sort-of okay,
but around five per cent were
getting to 65km/h and a few got
to 75km/h or more. Too many,
too fast.
The sort of data Murray collected
is really valuable. It helps
identify where enforcement and
education need to focus. This
brings us to three big problems
– vehicle speed enforcement,
driver education and road
design.
Enforcement first – specialist
road police numbers have
dropped sharply, in spite of increased
crash statistics. We have a
session booked in with our local
MP, to ask what her Government
is going to do about this.
Road design – Aidanfield
Drive seems deliberately set up
to encourage speeding. Longish
straights with wide, sweeping
curves and little in the way of
psychological triggers to keep
speed down.
There is a similar problem
emerging in a new subdivision
– Caulfield Ave, Longhurst –
yet the issue is less apparent in
30-year-old Patterson Tce.
Finally, education – driver
PROBLEM: Some vehicles
have been driven too fast on
Halswell roads.
education seems mainly handwringing
platitudes from the
police. When will central and local
government get serious about
using sophisticated psychology,
targeted to the people actually
speeding, to induce major behaviour
change?
The expertise is out there,
waiting to be harnessed in a
systematic programme linked
to targeted enforcement.
And maybe alongside some
reconfiguring of stretches of
road.
I posed the question of vehicle
speed to a group of smart
15-year-old secondary school
students during a problemsolving
competition late last year.
Their solution – re-test all drivers
on a regular basis. How do you
think you would fare?
there all day.
SOME RESIDENTS living close
to Canterbury Univeristy will
get to have a say on whether they
want parking restrictions on
their streets.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board has
been working with the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board to create solutions for the
streets – which are popular parking
spots for university students
and staff.
The affected area, which runs
from Straven to Avonhead Rds, is
being reviewed in five parts.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board deputy chairwoman
Helen Broughton said
public consultation for area three
is expected to begin in March.
Area three consists of streets
within the boundary of Maidstone
Rd, Avonhead Rd, Parkstone
Ave, Athol Tce, Peer St and
Montana Ave.
After “mixed” feedback from
area one in December, public
consultation for all areas was
delayed.
Area one was within the
boundaries of Hamilton Ave,
Ryeland Ave and Ilam Rd.
A majority of 41 per cent of
people didn’t support the proposal
to make restrictions in area
one.
During a meeting last year, it
was also decided to not present
area one to the board for approval.
Mrs Broughton is encouraging
neighbours in area three to get
together and discuss what they
want before submitting.
“We don’t want to impose
parking restrictions on people
who don’t want them,” she said.
Mrs Broughton said the board
will assess whether they need to
open up public consultation for
areas two, four and five.
WESTERN NEWS
SHARP-SHOOTERS: Maria (left) and Lauren Tucker and Julia
Harrison have been selected in two New Zealand archery
teams to compete overseas.
Archers aim up
Australasian
titles, World Cup
• By Andrew King
CHRISTCHURCH Girls’ High’s
Lauren Tucker and Canterbury
University’s Julia Harrison have
made the Archery New Zealand
transtasman team.
They will join the 24-strong
team which will compete against
an Australian team in Morwell,
Victoria, from April 19-23.
Lauren, 16, is in year 12
and will compete in the cadet
women’s compound section,
while Harrison will shoot in the
junior women’s recurve.
Both qualified with solid
scores in competitions throughout
the country last year.
But Lauren is not the only
talented shooter in the family.
Her mother, Maria Tucker,
54, will shoot for the Archery
New Zealand World Cup team
in Shanghai, China, from April
23-29 in the senior women’s
recurve.
Tucker qualified for the event
for the first time in a meet in
Rotorua last week and will join a
team of 16 to compete for a title.
“It is pretty awesome. I always
wanted to do it. (I’m) really quite
stoked about it,” she said.
Tucker has also qualified for
the Oceania Championships in
New Caledonia from July 9-13.
All three are members of the
Grey Goose Wing Archery Society,
based on Ferry Rd. Lauren
and her mother are coached by
Colin Tucker, who is the society’s
president, Tucker’s husband
and Lauren’s father.
•Also included in the transtasman
team is North Canterbury’s
Rebecca Jones and Ellesmere’s
Ryley Griffiths.
Schools choose student leaders
With schools back in full
swing for the new year,
the students who will
lead their classmates as
head girls and boys have
been announced
Riccarton High School
•Head boy – Josh Pau
Being head boy this year
is a huge honour, as it allows
me to have large amounts of
influence on the way our school
is run. As head students this
year, our vision is to strengthen
the relationships between year
levels in order to show younger
students more support, and as
a result, raise school spirit. We
hope that over the course of
the year we can implement this
vision effectively in order to
make Riccarton high an even
better school than it already is.
Over the four years I have been
at school, Riccarton has time
and time again proven itself to
be an absolutely fantastic school,
through both its students and
staff. Because of this, it is an
absolute honour to be able to
serve the school this year.
•Head girl - Apoorva
Patelkhana
I am so appreciative of this opportunity
I’ve been given as head
girl of Riccarton High. It’s an
honour to serve a school that embraces
so many different cultures
and ethnicities and is really passionate
about its students. This is
especially true as someone from
SCHOOLS
India – I felt really welcomed
in a school that celebrates the
diversity of all nationalities. This
year I hope to continue and even
expand this legacy with the help
of the other prefects in the committee.
We want to help create
a greater sense of unity between
students and hope that through
our leadership, we will be able to
leave the students and teachers
with an even greater sense of
pride and love for our school.
GREAT food
BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
Your fresh food people
LAMB LOIN CHOPS WITH
KUMARA, TOMATO AND
LEMON
Ingredients
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 pinch sea salt
1 pinch black pepper
6 lamb loin chops
2 red onions, freshly sliced
2 cm root ginger, grated
4 garlic cloves
1 red chilli, finely chopped
1 tbsp ras el hanout spice mix
5 tomatoes
800g kumara
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
1 cinnamon stick
500g rice
1 handful coriander leaves
CHICKEN WITH
NECTARINES
Ingredients
1kg chicken breast, cut into
generous bite-sized pieces
25g butter
1 cup chicken stock
½ tsp fresh thyme, finely
chopped
½ tsp fresh rosemary, finely
chopped
1 tsp curry powder, mild
1 tbsp cornflour, or arrowroot
dissolved in 2 tablespoons of
cold water
½ cup cashew nuts, chopped
3 nectarines, peeled, sliced
1 pinch salt and pepper
Directions
Melt the butter and brown the
chicken pieces.
Add the chicken stock and
the herbs and poach the
chicken gently until cooked. Set
aside.
Add the curry powder and the
dissolved cornflour to the liquid
and warm to thicken.
Add the nectarine slices and
the chicken pieces to the sauce
to warm through.
Season with the salt and
pepper.
Finish with a squeeze of fresh
lime or lemon to zing up the
flavours.
Garnish with the cashews.
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.
On an element heat the olive oil
in a flameproof casserole dish
over a medium-high heat. Season
the lamb chops liberally with salt
and pepper, and brown on both
sides. Remove the chops and set
aside.
Drain off all but one tbsp of
oil from the casserole dish and
reduce the heat to medium. Add
the onions and cook, stirring,
until softened, about 5min. Add
ginger, garlic, chilli and ras al
hanout, and stir for a couple of
minutes until fragrant. Add the
tomatoes and stir over the heat
for another 5min.
Add the browned lamp chops,
kumara, lemon juice, soy sauce,
honey and cinnamon. Pour in
about 400ml water, enough to
cover the chops. Put the lid on
and cook in the oven for two
hours.
Uncover and skim off any
excess fat from the surface. If the
sauce is too thin, reduce over
a medium-high heat for a few
minutes. Adjust the seasoning -
you may need an extra squeeze
of lemon juice. Serve with
steamed rice and some coriander
leaves.
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with
a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and
senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
HIP PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client
will know if it is going to work for them or
not, without financial commitment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample
parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Modern diet
leads to illness!
It’s not what you eat but what you absorb
Two Australian Naturopaths Stephen
& Shane noticed at the end of the 20th
century more & more of their patients
were experiencing gut, bowel & digestive
issues that were often leading to more
serious chronic health conditions. Being
Naturopaths they wanted to find what was
going wrong & began extensive research.
What they found was although their clients
were generally eating good food they were
not obtaining all the nutrients required
for good health from this food. Further
research showed one of the main problems
was the digestive system, “it’s not what you
eat but what you absorb.” Another wellknown
problem is the soils the crops are
grown in have been depleted of many trace
elements & other nutrients that are known
to be essential for good health & therefore
the crops & food are also depleted. If we do
not obtain all the nutrients we require the
body will compensate to some degree but
a lack of too many nutrients will eventually
lead to health issues.
Based on this they developed VITAL
GREENS, a nutrient dense powdered
formula that provides superior absorption
as well as comprehensive nutrition. They
decided on a powdered formula that
could be made as a great tasting drink
because liquid nutrition is the easiest
way for the body to absorb nutrients
especially if digestive issues are present.
The formula provides 76 vital ingredients
that work together in synergy optimising
each other’s absorption & benefits. Vital
Greens contains a carefully balanced blend
of nutritionally rich greens, vegetables,
fruits, minerals, vitamins, essential fatty
acids, plant & herbal extracts, superfoods,
powerful antioxidants, probiotics, essential
amino acids, digestive enzymes, fibre plus a
uniquely alkalising pea protein. It provides
superior nutrition to a multivitamin &
anyone will benefit from it. It is designed to
provide all the nutrients the body requires
for good health. It is also ideal for those in
poor health, those recovering from injury
or sickness, children, athletes, poor eaters
& the elderly. It is also suitable for people
with dietary restrictions & is gluten, wheat
& dairy free. Vital Greens will help remove
toxic waste from the body while supporting
Are you Magnesium
deficient?
Minerals are the building blocks of
good health. Some minerals are only
needed in trace amounts where others
like magnesium are need in much larger
amounts & on a regular basis to prevent
deficiency & maintain optimum health. A
large number of us do not obtain sufficient
magnesium from our diet & may notice
some of the common signs of deficiency.
Some of the more common symptoms that
may be caused by insufficient magnesium
are: leg & muscle cramps, twitches, muscle
pain, muscle fatigue & weakness, tremors
of hands, blurred vision, restlessness, poor
sleep, raised &/or unstable blood pressure,
poor circulation, irregular heartbeat,
shortness of breath, swallowing problems,
dizziness, headaches, anxiety, agitation,
irritability, seizures, poor concentration &
many more.
Although many young people now show
signs of magnesium deficiency symptoms
generally worsen as we age due to our
digestive system being less efficient. Taking
a magnesium supplement of sufficient
strength may be a sensible option to top
up our vital magnesium levels. Not all
magnesium supplements however are
well absorbed by everyone. Luckily a new
marine sourced magnesium has been
found that offers good levels of absorbable
magnesium as well as many trace nutrients
that are low in the diet but essential for
good health.
Pierview Restaurant.
Located upstairs in the New Brighton Club,
the Pierview Restaurant has always been a
popular destination for dining and private
functions. Offering uninterrupted views of
beach, pier and coastline, the view is a
stunning accompaniment to any occasion.
Spectacular summer weather in Canterbury
have seen an increase in people enjoying the
beach side and to add to the seaside attraction
the Pierview is now open Sundays from
10.30am to 2pm for brunch.
Offering all the expected scrumptious
breakfast/brunch delights, the menu also
caters to children.
Apart from Sunday Brunch the Pierview is
open from 5.30pm Friday to Sunday serving
quality, yet very affordable, a la carte dining.
The last Sunday of the month has turned
into a tradition with the Pierview’s ‘all you can
eat’ Buffet. Priced at just $25 per person,
tables fill fast on buffet nights, so bookings are
essential. And on all the other Sundays, there’s
a choice of the regular dinner menu,
blackboard specials, or take advantage of the
great value $25 set three course Sunday
special.
Downstairs the club's Tramshed Bistro is
open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to
Saturday with a great selection of meals, light
meals, and snacks.
As well as great dining, the New Brighton
Club provides regular live music, big screen
sport and rugby, gaming room, plus social
and sporting sections. Enquiries to become a
member are most welcome.
