It’s been a long time since our mob got to swing their legs over anything from Honda. This month, they surprised us by delivering the new 2018 moto crossers to our offices. We roped in the services of three very talented riders – New Zealander Stewart “Short Cut” Cooper, our regular tester Michael “Maverick” and the dynamite fast Jesse Wright to give us some opinions. We took the bikes off to the famous Dirt bronco track out near Krugersdorp – and we were treated to a smorgasbord of – well – lots of muddy talent. It’s a great track – if you are keen on MX – go and check it out. The bikes on test are the brand spankin new CRF –R’s –and the votes are in… These are some of the finest looking motorcycles that we have ever seen. It appears that Honda employed some Europeans to assist with the styling. Nothing conservative about them for sure! It was a pretty casual day – the bikes were brand new and not even run in – so the boys were asked nicely to undertake a few sighting laps just to get them a bit loosened up. This was duly undertaken with varying degrees of constraint. The bikes were swapped around, chopped and changed and the guys generally came to grips with the new machines. Forget the old CRF’s you know and remember – these bikes have been completely redesigned – the biggest feature being the happy buttons… Yup! Electric start comes standard – and about time. The kickstarter is gone and the bikes are fitted with a super lightweight lithium Ion battery. Feedback on both bikes was all about the awesome chassis and handling characteristics, both bikes turn exceptionally well and the boys raved about the handling. Gone are the air forks of 2017. In their place are Showa coil-spring forks and a shock that is mounted 39mm lower in the frame for a more centralized feel. So, after a brief fling with air shocks, Honda has gone back to traditional fork setups. DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE MARCH 2018 3 9
