Q: Where do you see yourself
in the next 5 years?
I would definitely like to see
myself racing overseas in the next
5 years, preferably in America.
My dream is to make it from
Johannesburg to America. That is
where I would like to see myself
and possibly racing Pro Motocross
and Supercross. And yes
that dream and hope is alive and
there!
Q: What’s it like, a day in the
life of Josh?
A day in the life of Josh- pretty
much the best day ever haha, I
just chill out a lot, enjoy spending
time with friends, listening to the
hottest tunes out and if I’m not
riding or training, anything that
a regular teenager gets up to. And
don’t forget playing PlayStation
and annihilating my brother.
Q: What’s a brief overview
of your training regime and
preparation for racing in the
competitive MX2 class?
I’m lucky enough to be hooked
up on Darrel Fitz-Gerald’s training
program. Every Tuesday and
Thursday we putting in the work
in the gym and then Wednesday
and Friday we out at the track to
get saddle time in. On the other
days I just do a little bit of my own
gym work just to keep up.
Q: Who are your role models
or inspirations?
I look up to the likes of James
Stewart. From his early racing
days, he’s always kept me entertained
with his riding skills and
I personally try and manipulate
his style, but I’ll never be like him
because he’s the first James Stewart
and I’m the first Josh Mlimi.
“I’m different and I hope
that one-day people look
up to me the way I look up
to him”.
Locally, I have a lot of respect for
riders like Richie Van der Westhuizen,
Kerim Fitz-Gerald and
Darrel Fitz-Gerald, just to name
a few. There’s definitely a lot more
but those mentioned are an example
of outgoing and humble people
and legends in my eyes.
Q: Who’s your biggest competitor/s
for the 2018 racing
season?
I have decided to take on the MX1
class this year so I will be competing
in two classes. My biggest
competitor will be who lines up on
the start line. The pool of talented
riders that can get the job done is
pretty big. We all have the same
goal and that is to win. I guess
we will have to see when the gate
drops.
Q: Before that gate drops, do
you have any pre-race traditions
or racer superstitions?
I am pretty religious so it’s the
Trinity- Father, Son and The Holy
Spirit before I race.
Q: What goes through your
mind the moment right before
the gate drops?
Getting to the corner first for me
is 90% of your race right there.
It is so much easier to put down
solid laps when you are out there
in front on your own and not worrying
about getting passed. Eating
other riders roost is not so fun.
Joshua Bubba Mlimi is a young
gun with loads of potential and
talent and definitely a rider to look
out for in the near future. He is
effortless, smooth and in control
on the bike and we wish him the
best for the 2018 race season!
Cuthbert’s Corner
(The first round of the SAMX
Nationals this year will be held in
Port Elizabeth, 17th February).
Brittany Cuthbert is a multiple South
African Supermoto and MX champ who
spent 2 years in the UK racing and raced
a few rounds of the FIM Women’s World
Championship. She frequents the motocross
and superbike scene cheering on
her family and the man in her life. She will
be RideFast and Dirt and Trail Magazines
roving eye at all the races and events.
