Honda re-mapped the ECU to give the bike smoother pull off the bottom end. Honda felt that the 2017 chassis was too rigid, so they made it more forgiving. To do this, Honda added a little more flex to the head stays. The Showa suspension has been recalibrated. Our guys absolutely loved the 450. Being new, the suspension still needed a bit of running in. The national boys were out testing their bike on the same day – their manager Boog, spent a bit of time doing some setup on the 450 and the improvement was immediately noticeable. The standard power feels really good – nothing explosive but all controllable. The different mapping switches that we talked about earlier are very evident on the 450. When exiting corners the bike doesn’t feel like it wants to jump out from underneath you. This is a good thing because the power band is linear throughout and this smoothness makes it easier to use across the RPM range. On the track, the engine is powerful and aggressive. The bottomend is snappy, the midrange hits hard, and the top-end pulls strongly into the over-rev, which is plentiful. The seemingly neverending top-end and over-rev make each gear feel long and, as a result, the bike requires less shifting than some of the other machines. The bike rails through the berms beautifully – and even in standard trim, this bike is smooth, rideable and competitive. Lots of grunt – so it’s not at all like the 250 where you are constantly working the gearbox. On this track you can literally live in 3rd gear. In conclusions – we asked each rider the question: would you buy one? The answer was a unanimous yes. That’s high praise. At your Honda Dealer.
