The Rep reported on page 1 this week that several houses in and around the Enoch Mgijima area had also been damaged after more than 80mm of rain fell in the area over a few days. Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality spokesman Gcobani Msindwana indicated yesterday that the municipality had not yet received any report of damage in the area as a result of the downpour. The Rep asked the Chris Hani District Muncipality (CHDM) for an indication of related damage in the area. According to CHDM communication manager Thobeka Mqamelo, Emalahleni was the hardest hit of all districts in the jurisdiction of the district municipalit y. Emalahleni’s area includes Cacadu (which was formerly known as Lady Frere) and the town of Dordrecht – the latter where a cloudburst had been reported and an estimated 140mm fell within a short period in the district. Mqamelo said, “Rwantsana and Rodana villages [in the Emalahleni area] have recorded a combined 30 damaged houses while Engcobo Municipality was also significantly affected with some houses completely or partially damaged.” Assessments were still being conducted throughout the various districts by the local municipalities (LM), which would then feed reports to CHDM in terms of the disaster management process. Obituary: Mzimkhulu Mqikela THE family of Mzimkhulu Mqikela has announced his passing after a short illness, on January 25, at the age of 62. He leaves his siblings, Bhejile and Nokuzola. Originally of Fransbury, he obtained his lower primary education at Mtebhele Primary School. He was popularly known for his rugby skills as “jersey No 7” in the ’70 s . He worked in coal mines in Mpumalanga, where he continued to shine in local rugby teams. He was a strong leader within his community. A funeral service was held at Faith Mission, Mtebhele Village over the weekend and he will be laid to rest at Loko Cemeter y.
