Stars aim for pot of
gold at end of rainbow
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
Rainbow Stars football
club is aiming for gold
in 2018.The Newvale
club, in its 15th year of
existence, did well last
year, but the focus for this year
will be to improve the discipline
of players and to encourage
parental support.
Coach and player Madoda
Kamte said discipline would put
Stars on the winning track.
“We will implement tougher
rules that will enforce players
being more disciplined. The
rules will be set to punish
ill-disciplined players.”
A lack of older role models
also contributed to a lack of
discipline among the younger
players, he said.
“We have tried to get the
assistance of former senior
players to assist us. Teams in
Ezibeleni enjoy an abundance of
senior former players helping
with the development of soccer
in their community and as a
result, their teams tend to win
most tournaments.”
He said community support
was integral in ensuring that the
love for soccer grew while young
people were kept away from
drugs and alcohol.
“We will visit parents of the
under-13 and U15 teams, as well
as the first-team youngsters, to
encourage them to support the
players. How will you know your
child is not busy with criminal
activities when they say they are
going to practice and games if
you do not come and watch
them? It is like saying your child
is at school, but you never look
at their homework.”
He said he was concerned
that the standard of soccer was
dropping in the area and that
development was needed.
Rainbow Stars had all that
was needed for victory and had
featured in two finals last year.
win Top Eight
TRY Again FC walked away with
a cash prize of R1000 in the Top
Eight soccer match against
Valgas at the weekend.
The teams braved rainy
weather to go head to head at
the Dumpy Adams Stadium, in
Komani on Saturday.
During the first half of the
match, Try Again opened with a
brilliant goal, taking the score
to 1-0. Valgas managed to get
an equaliser in the second half.
Rainy weather and
frustrations could be the reason
for two yellow cards received by
each team in the second half.
The game ended with a draw
of 1-1 and was decided on
penalties.
Valgas coach Archibald Dyeli
was disappointed with the loss
of 4-3 on penalties.
“We started well, putting
them under pressure, but lost
focus in the second half. It
might be a setback but it is a
lesson for the players not to
underestimate the opposition.”
When asked whether he had
strategies in place for the
upcoming league, Dyeli said,
“When we start the season, we
need to collect points in the
first five games. It is important
to win home games.”
Valgas took home R600 as
the runners-up.
