For a long time there was no sound that was my sound. Beatles bled into the
background and nothing took their place. Then one night, I was at my father’s house,
which was not Old Farm Road, and on the radio I heard a sound that I knew
instinctively was my sound. It was resonant, sharp, and had echo; it sent
reverberations out to the four corners of the earth; it would not be denied. I had to
merge with it, to join it, to become it. I would not be able to sit still unless I became
one with this sound, until I could similarly reverberate. I needed to reach the four
corners along with it. This sound that was a loud guitar, played hotly, showed me the
world seen through an auditory prism of light.
