Having heard so much about trufas we
were curious. The current price for this
product is around one thousand Euros
per kilo, so what’s causing all this
excitement?
Firstly, to me a trufa smells like my dog
Max on a wet day, and looks like
something he may have left behind. The
taste of the trufa in its pure form is
nondescript, but when added to food
magic happens. I have no way of
describing that magic, it’s so subjective.
Basically it is a fungi and the highest
price ever paid for a white and rare one
weighing 4lb.16 oz was $61,250.
Whichever way we look at truffles or
trufas they are the world’s most
expensive food.
She got to try one of these as a tapa and
was convinced to buy the package. The
cost: 15 (fifteen) Euros for six eggs
including the truffle, or 2.50 Euros each
egg. I hope this was a one-off purchase.
This has been only one example of
what can be experienced and learnt by
getting off the beaten track. It adds
depth and breadth to living in Valencia.
It also adds the purpose of educational
enrichment to the tool that is the
family car.

My wife bought half dozen free-range
eggs that had been stored in the
refrigerated truffle store where they
absorbed the odour of the truffles. In the
package a small truffle was included to
be grated onto the eggs as they were
fried.
