Wilmette Park District offers camp, job options Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter Although the dog days of winter are still upon us, the Wilmette Park District has their sights set on summer and encouraged local families to do the same by attending the Summer Camp and Job Fair on Jan. 30. Representatives from various camps and programs, set up shop at the Community Recreation Center, telling families all about their sunny offerings. For the tiniest campers ages 3-7 years old, programs such as Tiny Tots, Super Tots, Discovery Camp and Camp Wiggleworms will keep little ones engaged with arts and crafts, story time, indoor and outdoor games and even field trips to places like nearby, Wagner Farm and Emily Oaks Nature Center. Some of the programs also offer trips to Centennial Pool and Gillson Park and Beach, letting youngsters take advantage of the warm weather and waterfront. Slightly older kids, up to grade 8, can also enjoy programs such as Junior Day Camp, Afternoon Camp and Great Gillson, where activities focus on swim lessons and beach time, along with field trips to places like Classic Bowl in Morton Grove and Sports Complex in Libertyville. Jack McWilliams, camp director at Great Gillson, said his program helps kids maximize their outdoor experience. “We have such beautiful resources here in Wilmette, particularly the waterfront, so it is nice to take advantage and keep the kids Rick Flintz (left) and Julie Nichols talk up Arts in the Park during the Wilmette Park District’s annual Summer Camp and Job Fair. Alexa Burnell/22nd Century Media outdoors as much as possible,” McWilliams said. “And, to mix things up a bit we do take campers on fun field trips and we also come with a lot of creative nature-based play too.” For the creative type, there are dozens of offerings from Arts in the Park — a camp that focuses on artist exploration, ceramics, painting, and more, including swimming, field trips and outdoor play too. Aspiring actors will enjoy Broadway Bound, a camp geared towards the budding performer who enjoys dance, acting, singing and learning about stage crew, while Movie Star Camp offers the opportunity to learn film and acting skills. For those who can’t help but tap their toes, Dance Camp focuses on the major styles of dance — ballet, tap, Jazz, musical theater, hip hop and more. There are a variety of sports camps offered, giving young athletes a large offering to choose from including: soccer, baseball, volleyball, cheerleading, yoga, basketball, golf and field hockey, just to name a few. Jason Pilecki oversees many of the sports programs, adding that they have made a few new additions this year. “We’ve added extra pool time for all, and playground time for our younger participants, so that there is plenty of unstructured play opportunities this summer.” Pilecki said. Finally, for the techloving kid, there are plenty of options for Mine Craft, Lego Engineering, Robotics & Coding and more for kids ages 5-12. Most importantly, CPRP Manager, Carol Heafey shared that the Park District is looking for more teen counselors. Benefits of working for the park district include: resume building, competitive pay, exceptional employment references for a job well done, additional summer perks, five free passes to the center fitness club and deep fitness membership discounts. Anyone 14 and older can apply and kids as young as 12 can enroll in the Counselor in Training program, a great step towards working at the park district in the future.
