THE Papanui-Innes Community
Board could lose its chairwoman
if the budget for a Shirley
community centre is not included
in the Long Term Plan.

the end of last year, chairwoman
Ali Jones said she would resign if
a replacement facility for the east
Innes Ward was not included in
the city council’s 2018-28 LTP.
When asked if she would stand
by this after the draft LTP was
released, Ms Jones said she would.
“I’m a woman of my word. I
don’t want to resign, I love my
job, I love what I do. But this is
how passionately I feel about the
community.”
In the draft LTP, the rebuild
for the centre at 10 Shirley Rd has
been proposed to be delayed for
10 years.
“After 10 more years, it will be
20 years since the earthquakes
and this hard hit community
hasn’t had a facility. That’s
totally unacceptable . . . we’ve
been lobbying to get it brought
forward.”

Supermarket expansion completed

A “REFURBISHED, rebranded
and extended” Edgeware Fresh
Choice has opened a number of
job opportunities for the closeknit
community.
Owner Stephen Anderson
said with the new-look store
including its expanded produce
and butchery, opening of a cafe
and new fully serviced deli with
bread, salads, slices and sandwiches
all made on-site, there
have been at least 20 new staff
employed.
“There’s cafe staff, there’s
cooks and now with the service
deli, we’ve had to employ more
people there. Most of them
come from the local area.”
Mr Anderson, his family and
staff have been working on planning
and executing the refurbishment
for more than a year.
There are still developments
in the pipeline including making
its own smallgoods, which
could see more jobs open up, he
said.
“The whole thing is an evolution
. . . there’s always improvements
to be made. I always say
if you’re standing still, you’re
probably moving backwards.”
Mr Anderson, a Northwood
local, has owned the store for
the last nine years. He’s always
been a part of the Edgeware and
St Albans Community.
“I started out renting here
when I was younger . . . I’ve
always been part of this neighbourhood.”
He saw the original building,
the former St Albans cinema,
being pulled down following the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
“Then we had all the roadworks
on top of that, which
affected the business for quite
a while. It’s good to extend the
supermarket and start bringing
the area back to life.”
But for Mr Anderson this
refresher is just the start of
an overall rejuvenation of the
Edgeware and St Albans area.
The city council and Papanui-
Innes Community Board are
working with the Edgeware
Business Association, which

“We need to develop this
area because it is unique within
Christchurch. There aren’t many
of these villages left,” he said.

“That gives it a real strong
community feel,” he said. There
are customers who shop there
weekly who Mr Anderson and
staff are on first name basis with.
“We have regulars who have
told us they used to come here
when it was a movie theatre and
they still shop here.”
This year the supermarket is
celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Mr Anderson said celebrations
were set to begin in May,
with a number of “fantastic
prizes” to be won.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
OF MICHELE...
One of my earliest memories
at four, had me dreaming one
day about saving animals
lives and thankfully my best
dream came true. In fact it
was cultivated by my parents
and veterinarian Dave
Marshall (my dad’s friend),
who let me see Practice with
him in Worchester street as
a little girl every holidays. My
parents moved onto some
land when I was young
basically so I could have a
horse and be surrounded by
animals, which I was. I would
never want to do anything
else, but sometimes my
job is tough, mentally and
physically and you think
about your patients 24/7. It’s
just the way it is for me and I
honestly wouldn’t want Kyza
to be any different.
The last couple of
weeks has seen some
real highs and lows for
me. All part of my role
as a vet, but I thought
I’d let you in on a
snippet of my life.
Today I laid to rest
“Kyza”, at his home in
the Cashmere hills. Kyza
had been a frequent
flyer of mine since I first vaccinated him in
August 2006 as a delightful, bouncy, super
cute little puppy. So for 12 years I’ve had a
close relationship with Kyza’s parents and
the man himself. To say he’s not been high
maintenance nor costly would be lying, but
when you meet this magnificent, funny,
gentle Boxer up close face to face, it’s not
hard to see why his family have given him
every opportunity for the “best’ life possible.
Kyza had undergone the scapel many times
– knee surgery, lump removals, castration
later in life, three operations to remove
urethral and bladder stones, grass seed
foreign bodies but what took the quality
from his life in the end was Congestive
Heart Failure, which he’d been battling for
a while. No matter what his visit was for,
he let me do anything I wanted as long as
liver treats and pats were part of the deal.
He knew my voice and would watch me
from the waiting room ready for his name
to be called. Right up until the end he was
incredibly stoic, trusting, clever (he had a
real knack of clamping his jaw as to avoid
more medications) and he still tried so
hard to please the humans he loved. He
was a legend and I know he’ll be greatly
missed, least of all by me. Today was lovely
as it should be. It was a 28 degree warm
summer’s day and Kyza was lying on the
lawn peacefully and close by were the
people he adored. He slipped off to sleep so
effortlessly and easily and believe it or not
he wagged his tail one last time as the drug

was being administered,
as if to say, “THANKS guys,
I’ve had a blast!
He wasn’t scared, he
looked safe and at peace.
As I popped him to sleep,
tears welled in my eyes.
26 years of practising
and sending animals off
into the next life, doesn’t
make me immune to
feeling sad at saying
goodbye to a true friend,
a patient I’ll not see again
nor have the privilege
of helping. My last act of
kindness and compassion
is to end their suffering
and discomfort and to
make those last moments
of life as kind and
respectful as I can for the
animal that has trusted in
my care all of its life.
On a high note, another fabulous
K9 “Charlie” a 7 year old golden
Cocker Spaniel, escaped death
which almost seemed inevitable
a few weeks ago. Charlie came as
a second opinion and was a very
sick dog with a gloomy future.
He had refused to eat for over 2
weeks, had chronic pneumonia,
kidney failure and white blood
cells higher than I’ve ever seen in
a dog in 26 years of practising. Our 10/10+
team of vets and nurses worked tirelessly
and lovingly, often out of hours, on Charlie
and we got to the bottom of his disease,
started the correct treatment plan and the
rest is history.
Collaboration with canine specialists, lots
of internet research and special and loving
owners that wanted to try “everything”,
gave us time to figure out the pieces to this
difficult puzzle.
So as you can see, no two days are the
same and each day brings with it extreme
pride and joy occasionally mixed with some
sadness.
BUT still being a “VET” is the best job EVER!!

cut services.

angry at Environment
Canterbury’s move to cut
two routes in Papanui,
which is part a major
shake-up of bus services
across Christchurch.

routes, including the 107
Styx Mill to Northlands
and the 108 Casebrook
to Northlands, to plug a

resident of Styx Mill/
Northwood area. I’m
writing to you in order to
express my concerns regarding
a possible cancellation
of the 107 bus route,
from the Northwood Supa
Centa to Northland Shopping
Centre.
This will have a huge
impact on my family,
as we use the bus on a
regular basis. Moreover,
for my daughter, year 9 at
Burnside High School, bus
107 is the only transport
available in the area from
and to school and home.
I’m sure there are some
business reasons for
cancelling the bus but we
must have an alternative.
Anywhere in the civilised
world, in 2018, public
transport is considered a
vital public service.
I hope the transport
company will understand
the situation and it will reconsider
the cancellation.
Also, I would like to thank
you for your time and effort
in making our voices
heard.

voicing my real concern
about the proposal to axe
the bus routes in Christchurch.
The routes that affect
me most are the 108 and
107 in the Casebrook and
Northwood areas.
My whole world fell
apart when I read Environment
Canterbury is
$4 million shortfall in its
budget.
There is only one week
left for the public to
make submissions on the
proposal, which is part
of ECan’s draft Long
Term Plan. ​
So far ECan has
received about 350
submissions on the plan.
The public can make
a submission on the
ECan website https://
www.ecan.govt.nz/yourregion/plans-strategiesand-bylaws/long-termplans/
proposing to axe six bus
routes.
I have lived in Highsted
Rd for 35 years. My
partner and I purchased
a house there and lived
with our family. As I do
not drive I have always
been reliant on the public
transport.
At that particular time I
had a short walk to catch
a bus in Veitches Rd to
get into the city and home
again for work. Due to personal
reasons I found myself
alone with my children
and we relied completely
on the public transport
service to get around.
In this time, the bus
service was re-routed and
a bus stop was available
directly across the road
from our house. I also had
the choice of being able
to catch two buses into
the city either by way of
Cranford St or by Papanui
Rd. Over the years the
bus route has changed but
the bus stop for 108 still
remains directly across the
road from me.
Then the earthquakes
and the 107 and 108 routes
were changed to a shuttle
running back and forth to
Northlands. That was still
okay for me as I patronise
the bus at least six or more
times a week. I also go to
Northlands and catch the
connecting Orbiter, Blue

would also be changing
the route of the Orbiter

Innes Rd, skipping out
the QE II Drive and
Philpotts Rd section
altogether.

counted 15 people on the
108 leaving Northlands
at 2.35pm. Eight of them
were high school students
and seven were adults. The
next day there were 14 on
the same bus route leaving
at 3.05pm. Six of these
passengers were adults the
balance were high school
students. I have noticed
there are still a number of
people catching the bus at
the weekend.
I think it is totally
ludicrous that ECan is
proposing to axe these services.
It will affect a huge
area without any form of
public transport at all. The
area will be in the inner
circle from Northlands
to Northwood and right
through basically to Harewood
Rd. People living
near the Main North Rd
and Harewood Rd should
not be so badly affected as
they can walk to the bus
stops there.
Surely ECan can come
up with some alternative
form of public transport in
this area.
Perhaps combining
route 108 and 107 or alternatively
reducing the 108
and 107 at off peak periods
to every hour.
Or better still they could
look at extending some of
the numerous buses that
go along the Main North
Rd.

I am sure the 125 bus or the 28
bus could be extended to cover
from Northwood, Willowbank
and some of the inner circle
from the Main North Rd to
Northlands.
Has ECan looked into all the
building that is going on out this
way?
Also the new Summerset
Village that is being built at the
moment. Yes, they will be retired
adults catching the bus but the
bus fare is subsidised for adults
holding a Gold Card and, yes,
I am a Gold Card user now but
I certainly pay my way on the
other routes when Gold Cards
are not subsidised.
If they do axe the 108 route
I will have to walk from my
place at the Claridges Rd end
of Highsted Rd to Bishopdale
Village Mall on Harewood Rd
and that is at least a 30min walk
for me.
I suffer from arthritis, even
getting on and off the small
shuttles sometimes is a challenge,
but I do it because I have to. To
me it is my way of getting out and
about.
Sometimes, I have caught three
buses to where I have been going
but I do it because I have to.
I am extremely unhappy that
this may happen. I certainly
hope that ECan will look at other
options instead of axing these
routes or even extending bus 125
or bus 28 to cover for the 107 and
108 if they axe them.
LOCAL SERVICE: The 107 and 108 buses, which both go to
Northlands Shopping Centre, could be axed in Environment
Canterbury’s Long Term Plan.

writing to you about the recent
proposal by ECan to cut two bus
routes in our area.
We live in Styx Mill/
Northwood and our daughter
takes bus 107 from here to
Northlands Shopping Centre
every day to get to school. She
is a student at Burnside High
School and there are no other
transport alternatives for her in
our neighbourhood.
Without this bus route, we will
need to investigate some other bus
alternatives which will definitely
involve us driving her early
morning to the closest bus stop.

This is with regards to the bus
107 or 108 from Northwood
which is due stopping in the
month of June-July this year.
I have been living in
Northwood for the past eight
years and my children (girl and
boy) have been using the 107 to
and from school.
My daughter is in her last year
of school at Papanui High School
and my son has just enrolled at
Ara, his first year. In saying this
my daughter will go to Ara next
year as well.
Both kids travel by the same
bus every day and especially my
son has to change to another bus
(Blue Line) from the Northlands
to Ara, which is pretty hectic
anyway, as they catch two
buses to go to, and two to come
home, plus the walk from the
exchange to Ara. If the bus 107 is
withdrawn they will have to walk
all the way to the other end of
Main North Rd to catch a bus. It
is going to be terrible for the kids
in this area if the bus ceases to
operate, extremely inconvenient.
ECan should understand that
there are a number of children
who live here and they at the least
can operate the mini bus 107
instead of the big massive buses
which they find uneconomical.

News re: the proposed bus
cuts. I am not so much affected
personally as I am not totally
dependent upon travelling on
the 107 bus route. However, the
bus route cuts will really affect a
number of elderly people whom
I know personally, who depend
on the bus as their means of
transport.
Among those affected are my
elderly blind neighbour who is
totally dependent on the 107 bus
to get around. I understand that
he was going in to lay a complaint
as he so much relies on the bus.
In addition, I was recently
travelling on the 107 and an
elderly passenger who had heard
about the proposed bus cuts was
very disturbed with the news.
The bus was the only thing he
could catch to get places.

Keen gardeners awarded
GREEN-THUMBED residents
gathered at the Fendalton bowling
club to celebrate nature.
On Wednesday night more
than 70 recipients and their
gardens were acknowledged by
the Christchurch Beautifying
Association and the Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community
Board for having the best gardens
in the wards.
Overall there were 245 winners,
the others having certificates
posted out.
There were also 1002 cards sent
to entrants, the highest number of
entries in the city.
Community board members
Shirish Paranjape and Aaron
Campbell received cards.
Northwood resident Peter Lawrence
took out the premier trophy,
while Brian and Janet Lovelock,
also of Northwood, came in second
place.
Fendalton’s Chrichton and
Juliet Mason took home a trophy
for third place.
The trophies were gifted to the
board by former member and city
councillor Pat Harrow.

A NEW $2.5 million Fendalton
water tank has hit an 18-month
delay.
Changes to the design following
community feedback have
pushed out completion of the
Jeffreys Reserve suction tank,
which will now be completed in
December 2019 instead of this
June, city council manager land
drainage Keith Davison said.
“This is because of the change
of scope. The Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community
Board’s approval is also
required for the use of land,” he
said.
The plans were changed by
the city council after neighbours
of the reserve expressed concern
with the concept designs.
“Key concerns and suggestions
from the Have Your Say
engagement carried out in September
and October were the
height of the tank and the affect
on neighbours, security issues,
visual impacts, use of existing
site, consideration for other
locations and lowering of tank
height,” Mr Davison said.

Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior
clients visit complaining of pain in one or
both hips.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a
back muscle could also be the cause, as
shown in the image.
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health

At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the hip, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the hip in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client

Infectious diseases rife
in children between wars
Papanui Heritage Group chairman Murray Williams writes about
health problems that afflicted Papanui Primary School 90 years ago
IN THE period between
the wars (1919-39) primary
schools in New Zealand
faced many challenges,
although the most serious
was probably the on-going
problem of infectious
diseases.
The Papanui Primary
School committee records
of this period give much
interesting detail of the
way in which this school
was affected.
Diphtheria was a
particular problem in the
1920s.
This disease started
with a sore throat and was
transmitted by coughing
and sneezing and could
lead to fatal complications.
In February 1925, 27 per
cent of pupils at Papanui
were absent as a result of
this disease and in May
1926, the school was
closed for a week as the
epidemic flared up again.
Another potential killer
disease of this period was
scarlet fever which started
with a strep throat and
could lead to a severe rash
and persistent high fever.
Younger children were
particularly susceptible to
this complaint that could
be spread by poor personal
hygiene habits.
In November 1928,
pupils under 10 were
excluded for the rest of the
school year.
Measles epidemics were
rife in the interwar period.
For example, in 1934 the
problem was considered
so bad that the school was
closed for brief periods.
In 1938, the school
picnic was abandoned for
the same reason.
Perhaps the most feared
disease was infantile

polio).
In 1937, school did not
start until the beginning
of March as education
authorities reacted to
the perceived danger.
Polio could lead to severe
muscle weakness, the loss
of mobility and extreme
cases could be fatal.
In the 1920s the
persistent absences of
afflicted students (and
those kept at home by
parents worried that
their children might
catch these diseases)
had another practical
consequence for Papanui
as the effective roll
reduction could lead to a
regrading of the school
and the loss of staffing.
The headmaster warned
the school committee of
this possibility in August
1928 and a year later the
Education Board advised
that the school was indeed
over-staffed.
The unfortunate Miss
Glass had to resign and the
school committee could
only note their sorrow
that she had been forced
to leave.
One benefit of
World War 2 was the
development of antibiotics
and these “miracle” drugs
proved effective against
the throat infections that
led to diphtheria and
scarlet fever.
With the exception
of scarlet fever all of
the diseases referred to
above are now part of the
National Programme of
Immunisation; children
are vaccinated during the
early childhood years to
ensure that epidemics that
endangered the health of
their great grandparents
are no longer a threat.

Art Trail inspired
by local stories
LOCAL artmakers present their
works at an exciting Art Trail taking
place over 5 sites in Wakaroa Pigeon
Bay on Easter Weekend.
“e trail was inspired by my
mum’s stories of growing up in
Pigeon Bay,” explained artist and
event orgniser, Keren Oertly. “She
always spoke of her childhood as a
time of formation, of connection and
belonging. I was interested to explore
these ideas of identity in relation to
place through my research and work
towards a Masters in Fine Arts at the
Ilam School of Fine Art in 2017. e
community in the Bay was incredibly
supportive and generous throughout
this process – none of this would be
possible without them.”
Based on stories shared by the Bay
community and utilising materials from the
Bay wherever possible, these site-specific
and audience responsive art works seek to
celebrate the life and stories of the Bay. e
main exhibition takes place at the Pigeon
Bay Hall with additional artworks installed
along the way from the Summit Rd/Pigeon
Bay Rd bus shelter, to Knox Church yard, the
Pigeon Bay Boating Club, and Wakaroa
Point.
In conjunction with the Art Trail there is a
free public programme of workshops
