A Word from the Author...
Dear Student,
This year, we are going to learn about the government.
By now, you know a lot about the government. But do
you know how important YOU are to the government?
By the end of this year, you will!
In the United States, the federal, state, and local governments
get their power from YOU. This year, you are going to learn how to
use that power—and why it’s important that you do.
We will dig deep into the key foundational principles that are the backbone of the U.S.
government, and learn how the U.S. Constitution puts these foundational principles
into action. We will explore the structure and responsibilities of the government…
and the essential roles of citizens. By the end of the year, you will see that it’s citizens’
active participation in government and community that makes our democratic system of
government work!
But civics is just half our focus this year—the other half is economics. Who doesn’t like
to learn and talk about money?! It’s a fascinating topic, and this year we get to explore
economic concepts that work behind the scenes to make our U.S. and local economies
operate.
We’ll analyze the interaction between essential concepts like the law of supply and the law
of demand. We’ll dig deep into scarcity, specialization, and how people, states, and the
U.S. government answer the three basic economic questions. You’ll learn how economics
impacts YOUR life, and how YOU impact economics. And we’ll also focus on personal
financial concepts that will allow you to take personal responsibility to build a productive
economic future and achieve the goals you desire!
