NEW MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY...
First, it was those two kittens… now,
its four chickens… what will I have to
endure next?…
Last month, we welcomed some new editions to
the family. It didn’t go too well for poor little old
me, (the suggested favourite). I was told off for
being slightly over excited, but who could blame
me? They have feathers! Anyway, it gave me
inspiration for this month’s article… How do you
introduce chickens to dogs? Good question hey?
Uff, so here we go, my top tips…
THE WHAT IS PREY DRIVE?
Dogs who are of working breeds have
manipulated prey drives. Signs your four legged
friend is exhibiting prey drive: intense staring,
ignores owner or other distractions, refuses
to move, body tenses, motionless, crouching,
rigid movements, lunging, lips twitching, pupils
dilated. That kind of thing.
side, obedience training, and being responsive
and repetitive with consequences and rewards.
CHICKEN TRAINING...
Train your dog within 10 feet of the chickens.
Repeat, stay consistent, and be patient. Each
training session, move a foot or two closer, but,
if your dog becomes too distracted, take a few
steps back. You may need to start off at an even
greater distance - just go with the flow. Finally,
when the dog has completed all the above, you
can test your dog, if you feel he is ready. This
can be nerve wracking, but there is no other
way to truly test your pooch. I passed with flying
colours, of course, once I’d learnt!
CAN PREY DRIVE BE CONTROLLED?
Well, yes and no. You can redirect prey drive
by engaging in dog sports. We need to do
something, and will do anything, to burn off all
the pent up energy.
BEING A PACK LEADER... (REALLY IT’S ME)
You can develop a great bond and show your dog
you are the pack leader by taking walks side by
