Better together concept inspires<br />

winning business ideas<br />

A solution to the issues New Zealand dairy<br />

owners are facing took out the Most Viable<br />

<strong>Business</strong> Award at the Soda Inc. Innes48<br />

Start-up Competition at Wintec in <strong>March</strong>.<br />

The winning team, Creative<br />

Dragons travelled<br />

from China to compete<br />

in the 48-hour business<br />

start-up competition. They<br />

wasted no time in identifying<br />

and responding to the<br />

major issues facing local<br />

convenience stores – being<br />

robbed, low margins and long<br />

hours. Their solution, C&D<br />

Box, a cooperative concept,<br />

responded to the theme of the<br />

weekend ‘better together’ by<br />

putting store owners together<br />

to benefit from better security<br />

through technology, group<br />

buying and support.<br />

Creative Dragons received<br />

$10,000 from platinum sponsor<br />

Wintec. The team included<br />

students and graduates from<br />

Wintec and the University of<br />

<strong>Waikato</strong>, graduates from Wintec’s<br />

tertiary partners in China<br />

and academics from Chengdu<br />

University of Information<br />

Technology.<br />

However, it was a local<br />

team, Brown & Down Boys,<br />

that stole the show. This family<br />

team consisted of father<br />

and son, Ted Pogai, and son<br />

Christian-Lee Pogai (12 years<br />

old) and their family friends<br />

Livi Hirawani (15 years old),<br />

Adam Williams, Porourangi<br />

Gudgeon and Maari Renee<br />

Moke.<br />

Brown & Down Boys took<br />

out the Peoples’ Choice and<br />

the Best Pitch awards with<br />

an Airbnb style concept to<br />

respond to the issues New<br />

Zealand marae are facing to<br />

maintain their facilities. Their<br />

concept, an authentic tourism<br />

experience for participating<br />

marae won the hearts of the<br />

audience and judges alike<br />

through its sharp and at times,<br />

witty delivery, combined with<br />

a great idea designed to create<br />

“win-win” partnerships.<br />

Yes, developed Hook Me Up.<br />

This business idea aims to<br />

bring the fishing community<br />

together through a web-based<br />

programme to hook anglers up<br />

with boat owners and create a<br />

more valuable fishing experience.<br />

weekend had been a gripping<br />

journey for the fifteen teams<br />

and everyone involved was<br />

‘better together’ for it.<br />

Emerging Director<br />

Award sponsor boards<br />

The <strong>Waikato</strong> branch of<br />

the Institute of Directors<br />

(IoD) is pleased to<br />

announce the sponsor boards<br />

for its Emerging Director<br />

Award and Emerging Director<br />

Award – Disability Sector for<br />

<strong>2018</strong> and 2019.<br />

Wintec will be the sponsor<br />

board for the Emerging<br />

Director Award in <strong>2018</strong>, and<br />

St John will be the sponsor<br />

board in 2019. The sponsor<br />

board for the Emerging<br />

Director Award – Disability<br />

Sector, will be charitable trust<br />

Life Unlimited in <strong>2018</strong> and<br />

Enrich+ in 2019.<br />

The awards are designed<br />

to foster upcoming talent<br />

in governance, and winners<br />

receive the opportunity to be<br />

mentored by an experienced<br />

director for one year, funding<br />

for governance development,<br />

and a complimentary one year<br />

IoD membership.<br />

“We are looking to promote<br />

a cohort of Emerging<br />

Director talent in the <strong>Waikato</strong><br />

that will want to utilise the<br />

award process as their platform<br />

for a governance pathway<br />

and who understand the<br />

opportunity which it brings,”<br />

says Simon.<br />

The awards have developed<br />

a strong legacy in <strong>Waikato</strong>,<br />

with past winners going on to<br />

contribute to boards of significance<br />

in the region; as well<br />

as; mentor future emerging<br />

directors. “The impact of this<br />

award and how it energises<br />

emerging director talent is<br />

without question,” he says.<br />

The Emerging Director<br />

Award was first run in 2011,<br />

and the Emerging Director<br />

Award – Disability Sector was<br />

first held in 2016. The Emerging<br />

Director Award – Disability<br />

Sector is specifically for an<br />

aspiring director with a disability,<br />

or with a close family<br />

member who has a disability.<br />

Last year, Daniel Shore<br />

won the Emerging Director<br />

Award and Maree Haddon<br />

won the last Emerging Director<br />

Award – Disability Sector.<br />

Applications for this year’s<br />

awards will open on June 4.<br />

“All the same criteria and<br />

timelines apply to each sponsoring<br />

board but by thinking<br />

ahead we can attract a significant<br />

talent pool that will contribute<br />

to the region for years<br />

to come” says Simon.<br />
