Great news for golfing coveys at the Fish River Resort
MAKING IT ALL WORK: Ashley Palm, the general manager of the Fish
River Resort, says he is focused on guest-service, and wants to develop a
new culture among the staff at the hotel, build character and personality
and help them develop new skills
Picture: ROB KNOWLES
ROB KNOWLES
ONE of the
province’s
top golfing
spots is
about to
reopen its doors after a
brief hiatus, after the
former Fish River Sun
Hotel swapped hands
and was taken over by
the government as part
of a land claim by
Xhosa clans – and is
now under the
caretakership of
boutique hotel group,
the Mantis Collection.
This was announced
by new general
manager of the resort,
Ashley Palm.
“We are going to
open the golf course
f i r st ,” said Palm.
“We are going to
open up the Kontiki Bar
as the halfway house,
so that golfers can rest
and refresh themselves
in comfort. We don’t
want the golfers to have
to sit outside with the
monkeys to have a
snack and a drink.”
Palm has some great
plans for the former
Sun International hotel,
and was appointed as
the general manager of
the resort, when Carl
Haller of the Mantis
Collection was handed
the keys by the
Department of Rural
Development and Land
Reform early last
month. .
The Mantis
Collection, competing
against original owners
Sun International and
others, won the job of
caretaker until the land
claim issue regarding
the land the hotel is
positioned on is
resolved in court.
Palm and his
management team,
together with the
Mantis Collection
bosses, met this week
to iron out some
o u t st a n d i n g
issues and
present the
cashflow and
revenue streams
and its plan to
open the hotel to
the general
public, phased in
over a period of time.
He confessed that it
was often a challenge
when presenting to
government, but said
he was confident the
plans he was to put
forward were good ones
that would ultimately
take the hotel even
beyond its former glory.
“I’m all about
building a culture at the
Fish River Resort,” said
Palm, a 50-year-old
Capetonian who has
worked in some of the
most demanding
hospitality positions,
but who strongly
believes that customer
service is key to the
success of his business.
“But to be
guest-focused you need
to develop a certain
culture in the staff,” he
said.
“The things I will
attempt to instil in the
staff are a certain
culture, personality and
character, the three
essential elements in
any successful
e n d e av o u r. ”
Palm said his
experience at Sun
International (who
recommended him to
the Mantis Collection as
GM) was very
st ructured.
He said that in his
less corporate role at
the Mantis Collection
he was able to explore
new entrepreneurial
oppor tunities.
‘The things I will attempt
to instil in the staff are a
certain culture,
personality and character’
After a one-year stint
as a marketer at Sun
City, he was promoted
to chief of gaming and
later, spent the
remainder of his career
with Sun International
as the general manager
of the Sun Vacation
Club with 384 units and
243 beds and 1 400
rooms under his direct
cont rol.
“This was time-share
at its best,” Palm said.
“You can’t get better
experience than
t h at .
“And the job is
about people.
“We need to be
g u e st - fo c u s e d
and I realise that
the closing of
the hotel was a
loss to the
communit y.
“We will be re-hiring
as many of the previous
employees as we can
and as we open up
more of the hotel to
g u e st s . ”
And, on May 4, Palm
is to open up 20
self-catering units,
either twin (two single
beds) or double (double
bed) rooms with a
kitchen and a lounge.
The cost of the room
will also include
breakfast and will be
marketed first to the
golfing community as a,
“stay and play”,
g e t - away.
Added to this, Palm
wants to introduce a
competition exclusively
in TotT to give away
midweek breaks.
Over time, other
facilities will be opened
at the resort. Keep
following TotT, our web
TK MTIKI
MB U L E LO
Jonathan Tokota
and his wife,
Nunze, are looking for
answers about his
m ot h e r ’s RDP house in
Nemato which was
given to somebody else
for unknown reasons.
The couple told their
story to Talk of the
Town last Friday.
“My mom got an RDP
house in 2000, but it
was not given to her,”
Tokota said. He
explained that his
m ot h e r ’s name
appeared on the
beneficiary list with
stand No3873 in Zama
Zama Street, Mimosa.
“We checked the list
when it came out and
her name was there
with a site number, but
when the houses were
released to the
beneficiaries, she did
not get hers,” he said.
Tokota did not rely
only on the beneficiary
list to claim that his
mom was one of the
beneficiaries. He
provided TotT with a
recent municipal bill
for his mother, Noma
Regina Tokota, for 3873
Zama Zama Street. He
said his mother
constantly receives
such bills from the
municipality for a
house she does not
h av e .
“Look, my mom
receives monthly bills
for water from the
municipality and the
physical address in
those letters is the one
WE WANT MOM’S RDP HOUSE BACK: Mbulelo Jonathan Tokota and his wife, Nunze, are battling to
get his mother’s RDP house back, which they claim was given to somebody else Picture: TK MTIKI
that was under my
mom’s name in the list
of RDP recipients,” he
said. “But how do you
pay for a house that
you are not living in?”
He said his mom is
78 years old and a
pension recipient, and
cannot pay the bill,
considering she had
never lived in the
house.
Tokota got teary-eyed
when he said the
house is currently
occupied by somebody
else.
“We know the person
who stays in the house,
but we don’t know how
he received it,” he said.
“We have been talking
with municipal officials
and they always
promise to solve this
but they do nothing.
We have been talking
with them since 2000,
but nothing has been
done so far to solve
this issue.”
Asked for comment,
municipal spokesman
Cecil Mbolekwa
acknowledged that
Noma Regina Tokota
was approved for an
RDP house during
phase 2, but it was
never built.
He further said there
was an error during the
building of phase 3
RDP houses which led
to the confusion.
“It must be noted
that NR Tokota was
approved for an RDP
house during phase 2
on erf 3873. The house
was never built during
phase 2. During phase
3, GJ Mgadi was
approved for an RDP
house on erf 3872, but
the house was built on
erf 3873 wrongfully,”
Mbolekwa said.
He said the charges
billed to Tokota’s
mother would be
written off. He did not
explain why she was
being billed for a house
she did not have in the
first place or how this
situation had been
allowed to continue for
so long.
Tokota said the
situation was
exacerbated by the fact
an RDP house had
since been built on erf
3872, the plot assigned
to GJ Mgadi, but that
house was also not
given to his mother,
and Mgadi appeared to
be occupying both
houses.
Tokota said that they
would appreciate any
outside advice on this
matter since the
municipality seems not
to have a solution. He
can be contacted on
078 - 8 8 0 - 8 9 1 1 .
SAS war vet writes his memoir
Jackson relates bush war
experience in tell-all book
JON HOUZET
A SEPTUAGENARIAN
from Kleinemonde has
written his first book –
memoirs from his time
serving in the Special
Air Service (SAS)
during the Rhodesian
bush war.
Brian Jackson titled
his book, Hot and Cold,
to sum up the bush war
experience – long
hours of gruelling
patrolling and waiting
for signs of the enemy,
followed by mere
seconds of fierce
fighting.
“I’m old now and all
the guys in the book
are also old,” Jackson
told TotT. “I thought it’s
best to get my stories
down while I still have
time. Many of these are
stories that have never
been told.”
Jackson is a South
African citizen who
said he joined the SAS
for the adventure. “I
was in the parachute
battalion in South
Africa, and was advised
if I want a tough
challenge, join the
Rhodesian SAS. As a
youngster the politics
behind the conflict was
not on my mind.”
He served in the SAS
from 1970 to 1975. The
Rhodesian SAS was
based on the old 22nd
SAS in Hereford,
England. They worked
together, then Rhodesia
formed their own C
squadron SAS.
After his service was
up in 1975, he returned
to Johannesburg.
“I have written it in a
very light-hearted
fashion, but there were
painful times. It’s
something that in that
context you come to
accept,” Jackson said.
He said he had lost a
very good friend in the
fighting, from school
d ay s .
He was about 20
years old.
“Come 1980, when
Robert Mugabe came
to power, we did
wonder what it all was
for. You must
remember we didn’t
lose that war militarily,
we lost because of
politics. And South
Africa [under John
Vorster] put the biggest
pressure on Rhodesia,”
Jackson said.
“I speak very little
about the politics
behind the fighting.
“There have been so
many books about the
politics,” he said.
“I’m still in touch
with some of my fellow
soldiers. I told the one
guy I was writing
something, and he
corresponds with the
world, with everybody.
“The memories
stayed with me over
time. Some of the other
SAS guys said, ‘I can’t
believe you
remembered this and
this’. They remembered
the operation but not
the details.”
Jackson and his wife
Colleen moved to
Kleinemonde nine
years ago, after he
retired. After the army
he joined the Parks
Board in Limpopo,
where he was a game
ranger for 30 years,
keeping in touch with
n at u r e .
“I’ve always liked
being out in the bush,
he said.
“It took me about
three years to write the
book. It was on and off.
“I sent it to my
brother-in-law who was
in the printing field for
30 years to edit and
check, and he send
back to us,” he said.
“I didn’t actually
write it down, I spoke
into a tape recorder,
then my wife typed it
out. It’s self-published.
The idea was not to
make money, I just
wanted to get the
stories down.”
He said he had six
different friends
helping edit the book
and chuckled that there
were still mistakes with
punctuation and
spelling.
It’s a short read at
125 pages and costs
exactly R100. He
initially printed 50
copies, but it’s also
available on Amazon –
both Kindle and hard
copies.
“My wife wanted to
have a launch, but I
don’t know,” he
said.
He has
negotiated with
two places in
Bathurst to
display the book,
as well as CNA and
Bargain Books. You can
also order the book
from Jackson on
072 - 6 5 5 - 0 8 0 3 .
RALLY WINNER: Carel Buchner, left, from Grahamstown was second
overall and won the trophy for most desirable car at the OD Inggs
Memorial Run. With him are Albany Vintage and Classic Motor Club
chairman Joe Janssens, centre, and clerk of the course Peter Viner
’69 Benz leaves rivals in
its wake in OD Inggs Run
THE 21st OD Inggs Memorial Run
took place last weekend with
entrants coming from East London,
Port Elizabeth, Queenstown,
Grahamstown and Port Alfred to
take part.
The annual event, hosted by the
Albany Vintage and Classic Motor
Club (AVCMC), is held in memory of
the late OD Inggs, an undertaker
from Grahamstown who was an avid
collector of vintage motor vehicles
with a collection of more than 100
vehicles.
The vintage and classic cars
taking part in the weekend’s run
included a wide range of vehicles,
among them a 1946 Morris 8, a 1963
Jaguar E-type, a number of
Mercedes cars, two Austins and two
Rovers dating back to the ’50s and
’60s. The run visited Bathurst,
Grahamstown, Bedford, Kenton and
Alexandria over the two days.
The overall winners in their 1969
Mercedes-Benz were Colin and Anne
Meyer from East London who won
the event last year.
In second place was Carel and
Margaret Buchner from
Grahamstown in their 1963 Jaguar
E-t ype.
Carel’s car was voted by his fellow
competitors as being the most
desirable car in the event.
Third place went to Bruce Yendell
and Peter Owen-Smith in a 1970
Rover P6.
The club trophy once again went
to AVCMC who took four out of the
top six places.
TK MTIKI
PORT Alfred hospital
security and staff seemed
taken aback last Thursday
when EFF members of the
provincial legislature
unexpectedly showed up to
deliver a petition.
TotT was alerted that the
group would be visiting the
hospital and covered the story.
As the group approached
the hospital’s gate, security
guards appeared nervous. The
same atmosphere prevailed
when the group entered the
hospital. They asked for the
administration offices, and
were led to them. When they
entered the office they came
across a woman who
appeared startled.
EFF regional convener Litha
Zibula noticed the discomfort
and said: “Look, we know that
the EFF is known as a violent
party but we are not here to
fight with anyone”.
He explained that they were
at the hospital to hand over a
petition to management.
“We are EFF MPLs serving
at the provincial legislature
and the EFF has declared 2018
as the year of public health
care,” he said.
at the hospital. The party has declared 2018 as the year of
He further explained that
this was a programme being
conducted nationwide.
When he was about to start
reading their petition, a
hospital administration staff
member interrupted him
saying that she was
procedurally forbidden from
commenting on the matters
unless authorised.
She said management was
not aware of the EFF visit,
which is why other
management members were
absent.
But local EFF member Xolisa
Runeli provided proof of an
e-mail which was sent to
hospital management.
Zibula stopped reading the
petition, but explained what it
was about.
He said the EFF understood
that public hospitals were
facing challenges that were
beyond management’s
powers.
He said the EFF wanted to
be an additional voice at a
provincial level and possibly
nationally if needs be.
“We are aware that public
hospitals are facing issues of
infrastructure, shortage of
funds, and these are things
that we want to address at a
provincial parliament,” he
said.
He asked staff members to
report issues concerning
machinery which is not fixed
on time. “We want to work
with you and be your direct
voice in parliament,” he said.
“Look, this is a start but not
the end, we will constantly
visit hospitals,” he said.
When asked about the
effectiveness of their plan,
Zibula said: “We will engage
management on a regular
basis and have public
meetings with community
members to ensure that
management and the
community speak one
language”.
The treatment received by
the public from hospitals will
be a determining factor in
terms of what more needs to
be done. The EFF MPLs asked
for permission to do a
walk-through to see the
conditions of the wards but
they were refused permission.
They left an application for a
walk-through for their next
visit which they said will be
confirmed next month.
IT’S all systems go for the 100th Bathurst
Agricultural Show which takes place at the Bathurst
Showgrounds from April 6 to 8, and the updates
made to many of the most popular events are
generating a lot of excitement among participants.
The show committee, under the
leadership of Bathurst Agricultural
Society (BAS) president Danny
Wepener, met for its final meeting
before the show begins at the
showgrounds, on Monday evening to
hammer out the final details.
“It’s going to be the best show ever,”
said Wepener, who was supported in
his assertion by the other members
present.
For example, the show is famous for its equestrian
section that always features some of the best riders
and horses from the province as well as from around
the country.
But this year there will be a derby as well as a
show jumping event. Currently there are 82 horses
and riders who will make the trip to Bathurst to take
part in the events, and most of the classes are now
full.
“The derby is creating quite a stir with the horse
communit y,” said BAS lady president Pam Elliott,
who is also the convener of the equestrian events at
the show.
There have also been many changes and
improvements in the showgrounds itself, with new
paving, new horse and cattle stalls, a revamp of the
beer garden and a whole lot more. Wepener is
pleased that, with just over a week to go, everything
is ready for the show to begin.
Arrangements for the bars to be fully stocked, and
with TVs set up so that visitors can drink a beer or a
wine and watch some sport while they get ready for
even more excitement at the show.
There will be almost 200 stands at
this year’s show, but the committee
made it clear at the outset that the
stalls must support local hand-crafted
goods and not the more
mass-produced plastic items from
outside the country.
As for entertainment, the Graeme
College Steel Band will once again
keep visitors smiling and even have them dancing
along to Caribbean sounds.
Armand the singing cowboy will keep the folks’
feet tapping and even singing along, Rod Tyson’s
Zulu Dancers will be there, as will belly dancers, a
children’s ballroom dancing routine – and more.
There will also be the traditional Grand Parade,
where visitors can see vintage and working tractors,
vintage cars and animals marching through the
showgrounds.
But, of course, it wouldn’t be an agricultural show
(the province’s oldest and biggest agricultural show)
without the animals.
This year there will be sheep shearing, a cattle
auction, fowls, pigs and more, along with an
enormous stock programme to look forward to.
“The society wishes to thank the public and all
sponsors, helpers and volunteers of this as well as
previous shows for their contributions and look
forward to hosting the best Bathurst Agricultural
Show ever,” said Wepener.
March 29, 2018
OPINION
Will there
be equal
j u s t i c e?
THE big news this week, following the
prolific attention given to the
Australian cricket team for ball
tampering, was the prison sentence
handed down to former estate agent Vicki
Momberg for using the “K” word in a racist
tirade to police officers who came to her
assistance after she was robbed in 2016.
In case you have not heard by now,
Momberg was indeed sentenced to actual
jail time – two years, with an additional
year suspended – and was denied bail to
appeal her sentence, which her attorney
has indicated they would be doing.
Randburg magistrate Pravina
Raghoonandan heeded the request of
prosecutor Yusuf Baba, who earlier in the
case had asked that Momberg be
sentenced to direct imprisonment without
the option of a fine, as Momberg’s was
“the worst crimen injuria case” the courts
had dealt with.
In her judgment, Raghoonandan said:
“The duty to eradicate racism and its
tendencies has become all the more
apparent, essential and urgent now. For
this reason, nothing that threatens to take
us back to our racist past should be
glossed over.”
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)
says the effective two-year jail term handed
down to Momberg, now known as a
convicted racist, is a landmark sentence
that will set a precedent for similar cases.
As much as we might hate racial insults,
especially the historically loaded “K” word,
there is something deeply troubling about
justice in this country if a person can be
jailed for crimen injuria while people who
have done actual violence to others walk
free or get a meaninglessly light sentence.
Although defence attorney Kevin Lawlor
told the court that Momberg was not in a
normal state of mind when she made her
racist remarks, after just being victim to a
smash-and-grab incident, the court did not
consider this to be a mitigating factor.
Lawlor had asked for Momberg to be
sent for rehabilitation instead of
imprisonment.
Social media erupted with gloating
following the sentence, with the
predictable equally racist responses from
an assortment of people, with suggestions
that half her land be taken and that
applications are still open to move to
Australia among them.
Considering the awful racist things that
have been said by people, politicians and
SRC presidents among them, wishing for
bazookas to blow up white people and an
exhortation to “cut the throat of
whiteness”, it is bewildering that the NPA
decided to make the prosecution of a
nobody its test case to set precedent.
And the entire country will now be
watching to see if such precedent is indeed
applied equally, or if it will be race-based.
Attacked by Boerbul
ON Monday morning I was
hardly awake, when I received a
phone call from friends in
Johannesburg to say that on the
702 Radio News cast they had
heard the headline news, “Dog
bites 76-year-old man on East
Beach, Port Alfred”.
They wanted to know if it was
me, which I confirmed.
What 702 did not say is that
the trauma and shock which
happens when an 85kg Boerbul
charges you, knocks you down
and takes a good bite out of
your arm is not pleasant at all.
Apparently the dog does not like
people with hats on!
After this happened I lay
dazed on the beach with the
sand blowing gently in my face
wondering how I was to get back
to my car. I was just opposite
Fountain Rocks so I knew I had a
25-minute walk with blood
dripping from my arm. Feeling
very dizzy I could not sit up.
With many thoughts running
through my mind, I realised that
the only people who could get
me out of this predicament were
the NSRI.
Fortunately the dog’s owner
was standing by so I asked him
to phone the NSRI. Their
response was amazing and
within 15 minutes Juan and his
team arrived. After making me
feel comfortable. They did initial
health checks then bandaged
the wound. They lifted me up
and seated me in their vehicle.
DEEP WOUND: Pensioner Doug Sutherland shows the
seriousness of the bite wound inflicted on him by an unleashed
Boerbul at East Beach on Sunday
Their professionalism
immediately made me feel better
as I knew I was now in safe
hands. Hours of training were
evident with the calm behaviour
and confidence they exuded.
The Gardmed ambulance took
over for the final leg to
Mediclinic. The nurses did
further tests and contacted my
house doctor who was on call.
Dr Webster had to leave his son
and the pigeon training to sort
out my wound. It must be a real
bummer to explain to your son
that you have to attend to a man
with a dog bite instead of pigeon
training together!
Many thanks to everyone
involved in helping me back
from the beach and getting me
patched up.
This unfortunate incident
could have been avoided if the
dog’s owner had obeyed the law
which states that a dog must be
on a leash when in a public
place otherwise you open
yourself to civil or criminal
prosecution.
Ginger’s medicinal and health
uses are many and marvellous
ONE of the oldest remedies
for nausea is the exotic and
spicy root of ginger!
Many pregnancies are
marred by morning sickness.
Over-the-counter medicines
are helpful but not always. Try
using ginger tea, sweets or
biscuits (not flavoured but
with real ginger). No more
than just a few cups of refreshing
sugar-free ginger tea daily is safe
and can do the trick.
Fortunately, if the pungent
flavour is not your “cup of tea”,
there are ginger capsules
available. Even motion sickness
can be remedied by this spice.
This reputable root spice
enhances appetite and eases
indigestion. Scientific research
has shown how effective it is at
destroying intestinal parasites
(this includes some types of
worms). Ginger deserves just a
small place in your diet if you
the world, He said:
“Sacrifice and offering
you did not desire.”
These sacrifices could not
remove sin, so the shadow had
to be replaced with the genuine.
The Lord continued by saying,
“but a body you prepared for me”
and “Here I am – it is written
about me in the scroll – I have
come to do your will, O God”
(Hebrews 10:5 – 7).
In other words, Jesus was
stating that He was the
fulfillment of the shadow.
But what did this entail? “He
Adding a little fresh ginger to
smoothies will boost your
antioxidant intake and it m ay
to increase body temperature.
For anyone with an
inflammatory condition – a fresh
home-made juice of pineapple
(with its inherent antiinflammatory
bromelain) and
ginger (with its own antiinflammatory
compound named
gingerol) is a superb remedy.
That is not all. Ginger has been
will be handed over to the
Gentiles. They will mock him,
and kill him. On the third day he
will rise again” (Luke 18:32, 33).
John the Baptist recognised
Jesus to be the Lamb of God who
takes away the sin of the world.
On Easter Friday, we
commemorate His death on a
cruel cross. He paid the ransom
price in full for the redemption of
sinful mankind.
On Easter Sunday we celebrate
shown by research to inhibit
the production of the
inflammatory compounds in
your body known as
prostaglandins and
leukotrienes. Massage
therapists may make use of
ginger oil to relax inflamed
muscles.
Feisty ginger stimulates
circulation to all parts of the
body. This supports brain power
and all-over cellular function in
your body.
Many historical accounts
indicate the benefit of this spice
for conditions of arthritis, joint
pains or asthma. Some cough
and cold remedies to this day
contain ginger extract.
Studies have revealed how this
spice assists in diabetes by a
range of actions, which all
support a healthier blood sugar
balance too.
How does something
that happened almost
2000 years ago affect
our lives today? Much in
every way! Romans
10:9-10 says: “That if you confess
with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’,
and believe in your heart that
God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved. For it is with
your heart that you believe and
are justified, and it is with your
mouth that you confess and are
Sticking to long-term investment
strategy with adviser best plan
SINCE early
December last year,
we’ve seen a fair
amount of “noise” in the
media and in response to
this, markets have shown
increased volatility.
While you take care of
your body, exercise and
eat healthily, you still
catch the flu. The
strength of your immune
system and the expertise
of your medical
professional could
determine whether your
flu will turn into
pneumonia.
Similarly, the strength
of the comprehensive
financial advice that you
receive from your
qualified financial
planner could determine
to what extent your
investments will be
affected when stock
markets are volatile.
Building a strong
immune system for
your investments
Sanlam financial
planner Sticks Stiglingh
said that it might seem
easy to make a selection
off a fund fact sheet,
given the fund’s
historical performance,
but choosing funds also
involves in-depth
research and an analysis
of management
soundness, for which the
average layperson has
neither the time nor the
k n o w - h o w.
Glacier by Sanlam lists
some of the key factors
that help to avert the
worst-case scenarios:
ýTaking into account
the timing of negative
incidents. This is critical.
The length of time you
have been invested, your
age at the time of the
market drop, and the
future date when you are
likely to want to reap the
rewards of your
investment, all need to
be taken into account to
ensure successful
investment outcomes.
Mistakes can be made
in fund selection.
However, having a strong
research and intelligence
base builds confidence
and expertise – ke y
factors that help advisers
to make sound decisions
over time.
ýDrowning out the
noise. If investors take
all of the noise in the
media to heart, and
adhere to the “advice” of
all pundits, very few of
their investment
Catch up with what’s happening on the PA business front
objectives would be
realised. Morale in South
Africa 12 months ago
was at an all-time low
due to socio-political
uncertainty and the
prediction of an
economic downgrading.
Some pundits were
encouraging investors to
hold at least 25% of their
portfolios in offshore
stocks and cash.
If this advice had been
heeded, sizeable losses
would have been
suffered by those
investors as the rand and
bonds strengthened
during the year.
ýPerseverance. Stick
to the investment
strategy that has been
designed for you by your
financial planner.
Investing is a marathon,
not a sprint. And most
importantly, don’t panic.
What should we expect
from the market now?
IRRESPECTIVE of whether we
have long or short-term plans
for our homes, it is nice to
know what is happening in
the market.
I contribute to the Bureau
for Economic Research and as
a result I am privy to the
results of the survey. Economists
have a language all of their own
and, sometimes, we mere mortals
have trouble properly
understanding the charts they
produce from surveys! There are
three areas that I think may be of
interest to you: Eastern Cape,
accommodation and real estate.
Eastern Cape: Despite many
positive signs in the Eastern Cape
(other than the vote of
no-confidence in the DA in Port
Elizabeth) business people are not
bursting with confidence and
appear to have a wait-and-see
approach to growth. This is
unfortunate when one considers
how much unemployment there is
in the area. The good news though
is that we are better off than
KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
A c c o m m o d at i o n : The lack of
business confidence has shown in
the demand for property (which I
think is mostly related to
commercial property). Both rentals
and sales are not strong and are
expected to decline further in the
next quarter.
Real Estate: The survey suggests
that after a fairly sluggish 2017,
2018 is starting to show growth in
volumes and prices.
This is surprising when the
government has suggested that
they would like to change laws to
allow for expropriation without
c o m p e n s at i o n .
I must say that at Seeff we have
seen an increase in volumes and
purchasers’ preparedness to pay
more to secure homes in the area.
Overall, I am confident about our
market and believe there are buyers
out there looking for homes that are
fairly priced – and prices are
moving up after being stagnant for
a while.
I look forward to hearing your
thoughts on the market and what
you can expect from your home
should you want to sell or rent it
out.
E-mail Rob Knowles at knowlesr@tisoblackstar.co.za or fax (046) 624-2293
or drop in at 29 Miles Street from 8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday
IT’S an action-packed weekend over the Easter
holidays with the Amanzi Festival beginning tomorrow
and continuing with non-stop action throughout the
weekend and, through the whole of next week and the
following weekend (when the Bathurst Agricultural
Show begins).
If you are a swimmer, a runner or you own a jet ski,
you are invited to participate in some of the great
events planned for the weekend including an 8km
trail run, the Marina Mile swim, or the jet ski races at
East Beach.
AND, if you prefer your sports while sitting down with
a cooldrink and a sun hat, then why not go to East
Beach on Sunday and Monday, as well as to West
Beach for the rest of the week to watch some of the
best water sports action we have ever seen in this
area? If you’ve got kids, then Kiddies Beach will have
a plethora of activities for the children to do in a safe
and supervised location.
But ladies and gents, please remember that it is
illegal to drink alcohol in open public places, and that
includes the beaches. If you take any drinks or bottles
onto the beach (hopefully, just plastic and no glass),
please pick up after yourself and use one of the many
bins that will be scattered around the area over the
period.
OH, and finally on this subject, thank you to all our
visitors for coming to Port Alfred. We know you might
have chosen anywhere to spend your Easter break, so
a sincere thank you for choosing Port Alfred. We hope
you enjoy your stay and come back to visit us next
year when the Amanzi Festival will effectively be in its
third year and with even more entertainment.
ALTHOUGH the Amanzi Festival will take first spot in a
lot of diaries this weekend, don’t forget there are
plenty of other events happening in the area.
Firstly, there’s the Alexandria Easter Football
Tournament at Derric Mbele Stadium in
Alexandria.from today to Monday April 2. And then
tomorrow, there is an SPCA fundraiser dinner at Lara’s
Eatery in Bathurst.
ON Saturday there’s a lot of things happening,
including the Kleinemonde Morning Market, Rotary
Bargain Hunt, an Easter Egg hunt at Red Leaf Nursery,
cupcakes being sold at the Rosehill Mall by hospice in
aid of cancer, a potjiekos competition at Route 72
Saloon, as well as auditions for the Coastal Talent
Competition at the Little Theatre on the Wharf.
AND possibly the biggest event of them all (I’m
BORN FREE: Young and energetic, Colonel Lizette Zeelie's grandson, Liam Zeelie, ran the parkrun
on Saturday
allowed to say that because I write Neighbourlies) –
Unorthodox Jukebox Volume 2 will be performing at
Ta s h ’s Craft Bar at the Small Boat Harbour on
Saturday evening. What a great way to end a
Saturday, a great show with music from the ’50s
through to the ’70s with me, Rob Knowles, Scott
Harvey, Melissa du Randt and Sasha Badenhorst. It’s
a great venue, fabulous entertainment (a completely
unbiased opinion, by the way), fantastic food and
brilliant atmosphere (are there enough superlatives
there? – Just come, you’ll enjoy it).
FOR more details on these and other events, see our
Diarise This section below.
IT has to be said, but the ball tampering incident at
the third test match played at Newlands this week by
Australia has apparently just scratched the surface.
After worrying whether KG Rabada would play the
week before, now we have three new Aussies coming
out to replace captain Steve Smith, former
vice-captain David Warner and batsman Cameron
Bancroft who were all sent home.
The riders in the Two Oceans Marathon, also taking
place this weekend, have asked the trio’s
replacements to please bring out some more
sandpaper to help them repair bicycle punctures, but
requested finer grain as the stuff they used on the
cricket ball is a bit too coarse.
BIRTHDAY greetings, congratulations and good
wishes to everyone celebrating a happy occasion in
the week ahead, especially Sally-Ann Phillips-Page,
Joy Geard, Vicky Kleynhans, Okkie du Plessis,
Christopher Phillips-Page, Jami Weeber, Jay-Leigh
Taai, Hein Barnard, Scala Booi, Leon de Waal, Dorothy
E V E RY success for many more years to follow are the
wishes we are conveying to the following businesses
and organisations on another anniversary, especially
KTP Kitchens, Sports ’n All and Red Leaf Nursery.
IT’S not a good sign that the price of Brent Crude has
shot up by around $5 per barrel this week, as Brent
Crude affects petrol prices, which affect transport
costs and therefore the cost of food on the shelves.
With VAT increasing by 1%, this is not good news for
consumers. But Moody’s has kept the South African
credit rating at investment level (just), so we will have
to wait and see what impact all this has on our
economy and the value of the local currency. With last
year’s figures in brackets for comparison, the
currency was trading at R11.70 (R15.05) to the dollar,
R16.55 to the pound (R21.65) and R14.50 to the euro
(R17.03). In the commodities department, Gold was
trading at $1 337.13 per fine ounce ($1 238.94),
Platinum was trading at $947.20 ($946.50) per ounce
and with Brent Crude oil at of $70.11 ($39.60) per
barrel.
SPECIAL thoughts and prayers are with all those folk
who are not well, who are having or have already had
tests, operations and treatments. Sterkte to Roy
Potter, Andrew de Vries, Dot Fetherstonhaugh,
Emilene Bruwer, Jenny Groenewald and Mark Price.
SINCERE sympathy goes out to the family and friends
of Keith Kolesky, who suddenly passed away recently.
May happy memories of wonderful times together
comfort Lyn, Karen, Michelle, Grant and families at
this sad time in your lives. The funeral will be held on
Thursday April 5, at St Paul’s Anglican Church at 2pm.
CONGRATUL ATIONS and best wishes for many more
years of happiness to all couples enjoying another
anniversary, especially Jedd and Tania Reid, René and
THOUGHT for the week: “Harmony makes small
things grow, but lack of it, can make great things
decay”.
Historic year for
LAHS with 60th
THE Lower Albany Historical
Society (LAHS) celebrates its 60th
birthday this year, currently with
180 members and growing.
Formed in 1958, the LAHS has
over the years presented its
members with many memorable
monthly talks from a wide variety
of speakers, plus short and
overnight history tours ranging far
and wide in the Eastern Cape.
In addition, it has published 48
editions of its quality annual
journal, Toposcope, which offer a
fascinating record of research and
knowledge of the history of the
area, with many photographs to
illustrate buildings, ruins, outings
and people. The next Toposcope
will be a commemorative
“diamond” edition, edited for the
sixth year by Kowie Museum
curator Yvonne Surtees who serves
on the LAHS committee.
Almost 100 members attended
the LAHS AGM recently and heard,
in chairwoman Heather Howard’s
SERENDIPITY
report, details of talks and outings
during the busy year just past. She
also reported that the 60th
anniversary celebrations in August
would include the annual Morse
Jones Memorial Lecture and a
special luncheon for members
afterwards. It is also planned,
during this anniversary year, to
complete the refurbishment of the
Toposcope monument at Bathurst,
finance and work progress
permit ting.
In April, an overnight LAHS
excursion to Cradock will be led by
Brian “Bugs” Wilmot, who is an
expert on the history and
attractions of the town.
The committee for the coming
year is: chairwoman Heather
Howard, vice-chair Gwynn Crothall,
treasurer Doug Sutherland,
secretary Avonne Pickering, with
Yvonne Surtees, Joy Billing, Sue
Gordon, Delia Bavu, Dave Hawkins,
Suzette Grist, Margaret Snodgrass
and Sally Poole.
A great chronicler of history
ONE can hardly “turn a
page” or read any
history for that matter,
without the name
Edward Morse Jones
popping up.
A great reader and
researcher of 1820
Settler history in this
region, there are
chronicles written and
published by this man.
He spent his time
reading anything he
could find, from settler
letters and diaries;
researching in
Grahamstown in the
Cory Library, and visiting
farms in the region.
Morse Jones was, in
essence, the unsung
hero of information in
our area. His works are
available at the Kowie
History Museum in the
old station building.
A full life of sports
and pilgrimages
Giving new meaning to ‘going the extra mile’
BOB FORD
MOST people are content with
going for a walk in a park or
along the beach.
But this is not the case of Settlers
Park resident David Boyd, who
undertook the challenging and
well-known Camino walk in Spain on
no fewer than five occasions. The
longest of these covered a distance of
470 k m .
This all started when Boyd and his
late wife were in a doctor’s surgery
paging through a magazine when they
came across a page advertising this
famous walk.
“This caught our imagination and
we decided there and then to tackle
this,” he said.
He went on to explain that more
than 100000 people from all over
the world have undertaken this
popular event.
His first two Camino walks he did
with his wife, starting from Puedla
de Sanabria to Santiago de
Contostela. This covered a distance
of about 250km and took about 14 days
to complete. Not satisfied with this,
Boyd went on to undertake the more
taxing 470km walk on his own from
Salamanca to Santiago de Contostela.
This took about 26 days to complete.
He explained that this distance was
divided into stages covered each day.
He has five certificates proudly
hanging in his home as proof of these
achievements.
Born in Sunderland in County
Durham, England, Boyd completed his
education at the University of
Manchester in 1963 with a BSc degree
in textile chemistry and was employed
in the textile industry all his working
l i fe .
His first job was in a mill in Sidbury,
Suffolk, but his desire was to work
abroad. His opportunity came when he
applied for and got a job in Bogata in
Colombia, South America.
Here he struck his first difficulty as
all the people on the shop floor he
managed only spoke Spanish.
“So I spent the next six months with
a small Spanish dictionary in my left
hand. It was frustrating, but I had no
option. You have to force yourself to
think in Spanish and eventually I
became fluent after about nine months.
It’s a beautiful language and it was a
joy to be able to speak it when we went
on our walks years later,” he said.
He is still fluent in Spanish.
Meanwhile, Boyd had met his future
wife, Mary, and she joined him in
Spain, where she taught English at a
language school. After seven years, the
couple returned to England, where they
bought a house and attempted to settle
in their new environment. But the
couple were not happy and Boyd
accepted a job offer in Pretoria in 1973.
After three years in Pretoria, the
couple moved to Durban for two years
and then on to East London. From here
he commuted to King William’s Town,
where he worked in a textile factory
until he retired. They then moved to
Settlers Park in Port Alfred in 2006.
During their stay in Durban, Boyd
was at a loose end and decided to take
up cricket umpiring in his spare time.
He soon rose up in the ranks during
the 25 years that he did this and was
on the first-class panel for about four
years. This involved umpiring in Currie
Cup matches, which took him to all
parts of the country.
His only regret was that he never
“st o o d ” in a match at the famous
Newlands ground in Cape Town.
He umpired in matches involving
famous cricketers, such as the late
Hansie Cronje, the Kirsten brothers –
Peter and Gary, Kepler Wessels and
well-known New Zealander Ken
Rutherford during a spell in South
Africa.
Boyd’s greatest achievements
came in the sport of croquet. While
in East London, he joined the local
club in 2003 and soon showed his
talent for this when he won both
the open and handicap singles, as
well as the doubles open and
handicap titles.
A year later, his club hosted the
national tournament, where he won
the handicap singles.
In 2005, Boyd continued his good
form to win the SA Croquet
A s s o c i at i o n ’s open singles and open
doubles titles. In the same year, he
was one of the top-12 players in the
country to be invited to play in a
level best tournament, which he
also won. He followed this up by
winning the national handicap
singles in both 2006 and 2007.
His proudest moment came in
2008 when South Africa hosted
the world championships and he
was selected to play in the
national side.
PAHS swimmers
smash 20 records
SWIMMING
Monday afternoon saw the conclusion of Port Alfred
High School’s Championship Gala. The programme
comprised 102 events and records date back to 1983,
when Diane Meyer set a time of 45.90 for the girls’
under-12 50m breaststroke. Since then, Port Alfred
has produced top swimmers, such as Leanne
Lombard, Springbok Greg Kieck and brotherand-sister
team Ashleigh and Michael Gardner.
”It has been a pleasure to see some of the older
records go over the last few years. Our squad has
worked hard throughout the year and their efforts
have paid off,” said head coach Roger Nock.
Port Alfred has its own swimming club now, The
Port Alfred Swim Team, which is based at the indoor
pool. Here, Sharon Lemmer, Tammy Tinley and Jo
Beatt assist and run the development programme for
beginners and several school records were broken by
these swimmers. In addition, the school has its own
programme for development.
Local swimmers who now feature in the list of
record holders, are: Nicolien Botha – girls’ U19 100m
freestyle; Saffron Tweedie – girls’ U19 100m
breaststroke; Robyn Dacombe – girls’ U8 25m
freestyle; Connor Bessinger – boys’ U9 50m
breaststroke and Luke Lemmer who won the boys’
U19 100m freestyle.
Kate Tinley had a good gala, setting records in the
U14 girls’ 100m freestyle, and 50m backstroke. She
also set two records in the open division winning the
100m backstroke and 100m butterfly.
William Beatt and Scarlett Tweedie each set five
new records: Tweedie dominated the girls’ U11
division, winning the 100m freestyle, I00m individual
medley, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m
breaststroke races. Beatt equally dominated the boys’
U10 division, taking the 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly,
50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle
records.
Some of these swimmers will be heading off to the
Level 2 and Level 3 National Championships to be
held in Oudtshoorn and Cape Town respectively,
during the Easter holidays.
CRICKET
The PAHS U8 and U9 teams played a mid-week
match against El Shaddai at home and both PAHS
teams won.
D E B AT I N G
PAHS hosted Selborne College last Thursday. While
both the junior and senior teams lost narrowly to the
visitors, PAHS’s Gavan Schultz was named best
speaker. The debaters look forward to a rematch.
HOCKEY
The 1st XI PAHS boys’ hockey team held their own
against the St Andrews 4th team in a Makana League
fixture. The match ended in a 3-3 draw.
The U16 PAHS boys’ team won their match 2-1
against Kingswood College’s U16D team.
R U G BY
Wearing their BUCO and Kowie Toyota sponsored
kit for the first time, the PAHS 1st XV participated in
the recent Graeme College Rugby Day where they
played against Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary School.
Unfortunate mistakes cost PAHS the game 13-18.
Coach Ryle Murray commended the team for their
good spirit and thanked the supporters who had
travelled to Grahamstown.
SQUASH
Both Stefan Botha and Lise-Mari Coetzee played in
the SA School’s Closed Tournament in Johannesburg.
Botha finished 24th in the open boys section while
Coetzee finished 14 in the U14 girls section.
The PAHS Juniors played against DSG Juniors,
losing 3-2.
TENNIS
The girls first team enjoyed a short tour to Port
Elizabeth where they were scheduled to play against
Pearson High School and Woodridge College. The
team lost to Pearson and the game against
Woodridge was cancelled due to rain. A sincere
thanks was extended by the girls to Chix Pearson and
Marleen Gibson for making the tour a reality.
Commemorating Dias
AWALK from Boknes
to Dias Cross on
March 12 was a
very special one for a
group from Bushman’s
River and Kenton.
Kenton resident Ruthell
Johnston fulfilled his
vision of holding a
communion service at
Dias Cross on the date
that the intrepid
Portuguese came on land
at that exact spot and
served the first
communion on Southern
African soil in 1488.
People from other
congregations were
invited to join a walking
prayer group from St
D av i d ’s Anglican Church.
Thirty-seven oldies made
it to the cross on a
beautiful morning – a
day when the tide was
not too high.
Johnston explained
that Bartholomew Dias
was driven by an
obsession to discover
the world and set up a
BEACH COMMUNION: A group of people from Bushman’s River and
Kenton walked from Boknes to Dias Cross earlier this month to take
communion there in memory of the Dias expedition
route to the lucrative
spice trading countries,
with a dream of finding
the mystical person,
Prestor John.
The Kingdom of
Prestor John was much
like CS Lewis’ Narnia, a
land of fabulous wealth,
where the trees bore
multiple crops each year
and in it was the
fountain of eternal
youth. They never found
this mythical land and
got as far as what is
believed to be the mouth
of the Keiskamma River
before his crew rebelled
and Dias was forced to
turn back.
After a fascinating
address by Johnston,
the group of walkers
took communion and
then made their way
Photographic trip
down memory
lane in Kenton
PIET MARAIS
CORLETTE Venter, photographer and owner of The
Final Touch photographic agency in
Kenton-on-Sea, has been collecting vintage
photographs of the area for more than two years
and on Friday March 30, she will host her first
exhibition.
It promises to be a real trip down memory lane
with photographs dating back to the 1890s and
views of Kenton and Bushman’s River Mouth as
only the people who lived in those times can
remember them. It starts with only two houses at
Bushman’s and a clear view of none whatsoever
on the Kenton side.
In those days, Bushman’s was the main hub with
large crowds of people flocking together, especially
for the sports events on New Year’s days.
It is striking to see how the Kariega and
Bushman’s rivers have changed over time and the
photographs will certainly be of scientific value to
researchers concerned about the environmental
threats to the estuaries.
Venter, who grew up in Gauteng and followed a
course in photography at Kempton Park Technical
College, has been collecting the old photographs
for the last two years at least.
“It all started when a gentleman called John
Lake came into the studio and asked me to scan
some old negatives of the Volo shipwreck and
family photographs. I couldn’t help being
nostalgic and that’s when I started asking around
and spending time in libraries to find out about
the origins of Kenton and Boesmansriviermond,”
Venter said.
Venter is one of five sisters and she has fond
memories of visiting her eldest sister, Pollos, in
Salem. That was also her introduction to Kenton
and Bushman’s, where she now lives.
Ve n t e r ’s exhibition is expected to attract a lot of
attention, especially from families who have been
connected to Kenton and Bushman’s for many
generations, such as the Butts, the Gardeners, the
Forresters, the dominees Hanekom and Strydom
and many more.
LOUISE KNOWLES
KENTON Primary School
hosted one of its most
popular events on the
school calendar,
Kaskardag, on the
school field which was
transformed in to a
racing track on
S at u r d ay.
There were thrills and
spills aplenty and the
starting banner across
the rugby posts added
to the colour and the
excitement of the
crowds milling about the
fields.
The tyre-lined
racetrack winding
around the field passed
through a donga under a
bridge, over the bridge
and down the hill
through a mudbath.
Fortunately, there was
a carwash too – a lawn
sprinkler where the
kaskars passed by.
There was also a pit
stop where new
members of the team
took over the task of
pushing the kaskars.
Lindsey van der
Schyff’s Grade 5 team –
Fast and Furious – won
the final match in the
senior division (Grades
4-7).
“The Grade 4s were
about to beat us when
they went flying into the
tyres. We also beat the
Grade 7s in two laps,”
said 10-year-old Kaitlyn
Munro who was part of
the 21 children in the
Fast and Furious team.
In the junior division –
(Grade R-3) –
Michaeleen Bates’ Grade
3 team, the Turbo Trolls,
won the finals.
Parents and teachers
also competed against
each other, with the
former Grade 7s joining
in the fun. The teachers
won the match with
teacher Malindi
Diaz pigeon season off to
flying start with baby auction
PIET MARAIS
THE scene is set for what
promises to be a great racing
pigeon season this year for Diaz
One Loft, a national pigeon loft
based in Bushman’s River Mouth
with an intake of 580 birds.
“We are excited because this is
our tenth year as a national loft
and we are looking forward to the
coming celebrations. This year we
will stage 11 races, the 11th added
to commemorate our 10 years of
racing,” committee chairman Dr
Luiz Pedro said.
The season starts with a baby
auction on Sunday at the Diaz
Country Club on the corner of
Alexandria Street and the R72 in
Bushman’s. All birds purchased
will be entered into the baby race,
which will take place during the
fourth race of the season, starting
from Kokstad. Good prize money
can be won and the season lasts
until September.
“I would like to invite anyone
even remotely interested in
pigeons to attend the auction. It is
a great way for the public to get
involved,” said Pedro.
Apart from the more
professionally-minded pigeon
racers, with pigeons entered from
PUSHING ON: Former Grade 7s from Kenton Primary School were also
allowed to take part in the Kaskardag at the school fields last Saturday.
Teammates push Jeandre van Niekerk around the makeshift track in an
attempt to get ahead of the others
Pictures: LOUISE KNOWLES
Dylan Volschenk.
“The parents made
the kaskars and they are
fixed and re-used every
year since the
competition started in
2006,” said school
secretary Di Hutchison.
The day-long event is
held every second year
because it takes so
much organising. Funds
will go towards lifting,
levelling and replanting
the playing fields.
Local resident Graeme
Hutchison was emcee
for the day.
Local artist and
gallery owner Tess
Lovemore kindly agreed
to give her painting
away to the winner of
the raffle and spent the
day in a tent on the field
painting the rural scene
with cows.
She also painted a
treasure map which
children could stick pins
all corners of the country, there
will be several social events. The
most popular thus far was the
Hospice Pigeon Race last year,
organised by the Kenton Rotary
Club.
“The venue was packed with
people dressed up as they would
for the Durban July Handicap. Fun
bets were placed and all proceeds
Other events were a
tug-o’-war, a potjiekos
competition for the
parents who also sold
potjiekos afterwards and
a prize-giving at the end
of the day.
“We want to thank all
our sponsors, local and
Port Alfred alike, without
whom it would not be
possible,” said
Hutchison.
donated to the hospice in Port
Alfred. The Rotary Club’s success
has led us to plan more social and
charity events in the coming
season,” Pedro said.
S u n d ay ’s auction starts at 12
noon and the pigeons can be
viewed from 10am. The kitchen
and pub will be open for drinks
and meals.
What’s hot or not at the box office
LIFE AND DEATH: Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) makes a shocking discovery on the mythical island of
Yamatai, in ‘Tomb Raider’, now showing at Rosehill Cinema
‘Tomb Raider’ re b o o t
a thrilling action-fest
JON HOUZET
Tomb Raider, with
Alicia Vikander,
Dominic West, Daniel
Wu, Walton Giggins
and Kristin Scott
Thomas. 4/5
BASED on the
popular video game, a
Tomb Raider sequel has
been long overdue
since the two movies
featuring Angelina Jolie
in the title role.
The filmmakers this
time opted for a gritty
reboot, with the story of
what set Lara Croft on
the path to becoming
the Tomb Raider.
Long before this
movie was made, I
thought if they ever
made another To m b
Raider movie, young
actress Alicia Vikander
(Ex Machina) would
make a great Lara Croft.
And presto, my dreams
fulfilled.
An heir to a vast
British estate, including
m u l t i n at i o n a l
companies, since her
father Richard’s
(Dominic West)
disappearance on an
archaeological trip
seven years previously,
Croft has opted not to
accept her inheritance
as she does not believe
he is dead.
Instead she has opted
to live simply, making a
living as a bicycle
courier and joining a
local gym where she is
learning how to fight.
After a risky street
race lands her in jail,
Croft is bailed out by
her father’s business
partner Ana Miller
(Kristin Scott Thomas),
who again presents her
with the papers to sign
conferring her
inheritance.
She is also presented
with a Chinese puzzle
which she easily solves,
something she had a
talent for as a young
girl.
She is intrigued by
the message that pops
out about a final letter
from her father, and
ignoring her inheritance
papers she instead
heads back to her
family estate to solve
the clue given to her by
the Chinese puzzle.
The documents she
discovers inside a
secret chamber lead her
to Hong Kong, where
she hires a drunken
skipper, Lu Ren (Daniel
Wu), also with ties to
her father, to take her
on a perilous journey to
the Devil’s Sea to find
the island of Yamatai.
The island is the
supposed final resting
place of a mythical
Japanese sorceress
Himiko, who was
entombed by her
enemies, along with the
usual warnings that
releasing her would
bring death and
destruction upon the
world.
But, as is human
nature, of course there
are people who want to
do exactly that. After
their vessel is wrecked
on the deadly reefs
encircling Yamatai,
Croft and Ren are taken
prisoner by the
shadowy organisation
called Trinity, who are
using slave labour and
blasting to try and
locate Himiko’s tomb.
Mathias Vogel
(Walton Giggins), the
leader of the expedition,
tries to force Croft to
reveal what she knows,
but she escapes and so
ensues a cat-and-mouse
pursuit on the island,
along with thrilling
action, death-defying
escapes and dramatic
discoveries.
Fans will be pleased
with the numerous
hazards and traps Croft
has to overcome with
her intelligence and
agility, as the video
game is renowned for,
and there is also a
satisfying take on the
supernatural elements
of the story perhaps
having a scientifically
plausible explanation.
Jazz duo wow Castle
LOUISE KNOWLES
IF you think of jazz,
the accordion and the
violin may not seem
to jazz with it, but if you
think of France, Russia
and gypsy jazz music,
you might be on the
right path.
About 60 people
came to find out at the
Classics at the Castle
last Wednesday
evening, braving the
cold westerly.
“’What kind of music
do you play?’ Pe o p l e
always ask me that
q u e st i o n ,” elect ric
violinist Luca Ciarla said.
Ciarla grew up
“listening to, playing
and adoring” music
from Bach to Charlie
Parker, the Beatles and
Neapolitan music, and
started playing folk, and
jazz from age 12,
improvising on piano
and violin. Accordionist
Antonino de Luca, the
other half of Duo
Etnopolis, grew up with
Sicilian folk music from
a young age.
“I decided not to
decide,” Ciarla said. “I
play everything from Il
G i u st i n o to C a r ava n ,”
which were their two
opening pieces – by
Vivaldi and Ellington
r e s p e c t i v e l y.
They played the Tr a i n
Song inspired by travel
in Hungary or Romania
where if you go into a
bar, “you will hear some
folk gypsy music and
see some amazing
talent”, Ciarla said.
Fascinated by Bach,
whose music he played
at the Festival and at
the Castle in 2014, and
by technology, the
violinist played over
sub-theme, plucking the
notes. Or, playing over a
pre-recording of
himself, the notes of the
song became like drops
of water echoing from a
cave, a well or even
outer space.
After the break they
played a beautiful piece
of music by Ennio
Morricone, one of the
greatest composers of
the past 50 years and
one of the most
gorgeous things you
can do as an
instrumentalist, Ciarla
said.
In the tradition of
Puccini, Morricone’s
orchestration included
the electric guitar.
He founded free
improvisation in Rome,
and taught Ciarla’s own
teacher, but he was a
In South Africa, he is
possibly most famous
for his soundtrack of
the movie, The Mission.
The last piece was
composed by “Maest ro
although it is the first
time he has been to this
country, the piece
which he called Madiba
was written in honour
of Nelson Mandela.
While Ciarla has
played in 66 other
countries, his favourites
being in Europe and
I found their music
innovative, improvised,
expressive and
experimental,
transcending the
boundaries between the
genres of jazz, classical
and world music. It was
very enjoyable.
Thanking the players
after they had played
their encore, host Sue
Gordon said Madiba
was a moving piece,
melancholic and
appropriate for
Human Rights Day and
also the autumn
equinox.

TENDER NOTICE & INVITATION TO TENDER FOR PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR
PROJECT NAME: AUGMENTATION OF THE ALEXANDRIA BULK WATER SUPPLY
¿
the following:
LOUISE KNOWLES
THE opening event of the
Amanzi Festival – the Royal St
Andrews Hotel 8km Trail Run at
7.30am on Friday – is a unique
and prestigious new
cross-country run organised by
Sticks Stiglingh and other
members of Kowie Striders.
The well-chosen route starts
out at the Royal Port Alfred Golf
Course, and progresses partly on
the beach and road, before
ending at the golf course.
There are attractive prizes
across many categories,
including walkers.
The first walker can win R300
and the first man and woman
home in the open section R1 000
each. There are fun prizes for
juniors, and unique money prizes
to be earned in the following age
groups 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and
over 70.
“I hope that we will get 300
people – if we get 150 then
nearly everyone will get an
Amanzi Festival T-shirt at least!”
said Stiglingh, who knows how
hard runners work in a race.
You have to register for the
race (adults R80, scholars R40
and pensioners R65), finish the
race and wear a flash in front
and back in order to win.
Register online at entrytime.com,
or at the hotel between 5-7pm
tonight (March 29) or before the
event tomorrow morning.
There will also be a table
available where you can register
for the mile swim at the same
time.
Stiglingh has been with Kowie
Striders for three years and has
a permanent licence for
completing 10 full-length (42km)
marathons. This entitles him to
run the Two Oceans in Cape
Town, and he is flying there
immediately after the trail run is
over to do the half-marathon on
Saturday while his wife,
Marianne, and children do the
full marathon.
If you do not have a
permanent licence, you can also
purchase a temporary licence
that will allow you to participate.
You can buy a temporary licence
to do the trail run for R30. You
can also buy a permanent
licence which is cheaper in the
long run, according to Stiglingh
who has sold 45 licences this
year alone.
Most of the people running in
the trail run will be from Port
Alfred rather than league
runners who only run in
well-established races, said
Stiglingh. But in the future, he is
confident the race will attract
club runners from all around the
countr y.
There is a possibility a bike
race will be added to the trail
run and the mile swim and
develop into a triathlon, he said.
Currently, the trail run is a
development race for 8km
cross-country runners like Kowie
St riders’ Wandile Funde,
Ayabonga Saul and Mtutu Pikoli
who could make the Eastern
Province team and go on to run
in the South African Cross
Country Championships in Port
Elizabeth this year.
Food and bar facilities are
available at the Royal St
Andrews Hotel, the sponsors of
the event.

will be eligible to tender.

We are looking for:
A young and dynamic person to assist
with the following:
Graphic design (Corel Draw /
Photoshop).
BRAANS COUPLE OFF TO HILTON
Very shortly, Grahamstown takes leave of a
popular and well-known local couple who,
over the past 14 years, has served the
community in various ways. Derek and
Cathy Braans are on their way to Hilton in
KwaZulu-Natal where Derek becomes the
new headmaster of Cowan House
Preparatory School.
While living in Grahamstown, Derek
Braans has been headmaster of Kingswood
Junior School, and Cathy Braans has been
the owner of public relations and
promotions firm Cathy Braans Public
Relations. The former headmaster of
Theodor Herzl School in Port Elizabeth
takes up his appointment at Cowan House
on April 1.
There is a little-known fact about Derek
Braans, and I’m about to share it with you.
For two years – 1987 and 1988 – he was a
professional rugby player in France, turning
out for the Castres Olympique club, in
Castres in the fullback and flyhalf positions.
In December last year, the couple flew to
France for a Castres Olympique reunion of
former players and officials, and it was a
really special and memorable occasion,
they said.
The Braans couple has three sons, all
educated at Kingswood College. Cameron
teaches at Kingswood Junior School and
coaches under-13A rugby and cricket, Jono
works at Investec in Johannesburg, and
Michael is studying at the University of East
Anglia in Norwich, England.
While Cathy Braans herself is moving to
another province, her PR and promotions
firm will continue to operate with Lindsay
Vroom handling matters locally, and Cathy
a mere phone call, e-mail or SMS away.
“Lindsay and I will handle operations
j o i n t l y, ” said Cathy earlier this week. She
added she will probably visit Grahamstown
four times a year on business.
The firm has several functions and
projects lined up for the remainder of the
year, including assisting with the
organisation of the G2C mountain bike
race, as well as organising a conference
and various corporate dinners.
ON THE RISE
The good news on the water front this week
is that Settlers Dam is, after all the rain
we’ve had lately, estimated to be 25% of its
total capacity. This represents an increase
of about 6% in recent weeks.
Nevertheless, water restrictions are still
in place, residents should note. They are
urged to use a maximum of 60 litres per
person per day, while the use of hosepipes
is not allowed, the watering of gardens
except from non-municipal sources, and car
washes are required to recycle 60% of
water used.
BRIGHT STAR ON THE CORNER
The newly opened Makana Service Station
at the corner of Beaufort and Bathurst
streets represents an investment of
R6-million by owners Jon Campbell and
Mark Shelton, it was learnt at the official
opening of the Caltex fuel station last
Friday. Campbell also announced that a
Pick n Pay convenience store will open in
the double-storey dwelling alongside the
filling station, hopefully before the end of
the year.
E-TYPE JAG TAKES SECOND
Carel and Margaret Buchner, of
Grahamstown piloted their 1963 Jaguar
E-Type to second place overall at last
w e e ke n d ’s OD Inggs Memorial Run hosted
by the Port Alfred-based Albany Vintage &
Classic Car Motor Club. The event is held
each year in memory of the late OD Inggs, a
Grahamstown undertaker and avid collector
of vintage motor vehicles.
Competitors in this year’s event visited
Bathurst, Grahamstown, Bedford,
Alexandria and Kenton-on-Sea. Among the
cars taking part were a 1946 Morris 8, a
number of Mercedes-Benz sedans, two
Austins and two Rovers. Entrants came
from Port Elizabeth, East London, Komani,
Grahamstown and Port Alfred.
The Buchners’ Jaguar was also voted the
most desirable car in the event.
GREAT START TO SCHOOLS’ R U G BY
SEASON
With the weather playing along in
ultra-bright fashion last Saturday, the Pam
Golding Properties Graeme College rugby
day was a massive success, with schools’
players and officials, plus supporters and
parents, swelling the attendance figures for
the day to several thousand. Graeme
College were magnificent hosts –
headmaster Kevin Watson greeted guests
in the Graemian Centre, event convenor
Nico van der Meulen was his usual busy
self, ensuring things were running
OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Watched by Caltex Eastern Cape regional executives, left
and right, Jon and Ronel Campbell cut the symbolic ribbon last Friday to signify
the official opening of the Makana Service Station that will supply Caltex fuels.
Jon is co-owner with Mark Shelton of the new development on the corner of
Beaufort and Bathurst streets
PIPING HOT: Two pipers of the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band and St Andrew’s
pupils await the imminent arrival of the St Andrew’s first team onto Somerset
Field during the Graeme College rugby day on Saturday. St Andrew’s went on
to beat Hudson Park High from East London 22-14
Picture: SUPPLIED
RUNNING THE SHOW: Cathy Braans, back left, and Lindsay Vroom oversee the
registration process prior to the start of the Makana Brick 8km Nite Race
earlier this month. Cathy Braans Public Relations assists with the organisat i o n
of the very popular annual event and will continue to do so when Cathy Braans
and husband, Derek, leave Grahamstown shortly for Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal
smoothly, teachers and mothers’ union
committee members provided a delicious
lunch for coaches and officials, gate
attendants dished out the attractively
designed and informative programmes and
raked in the cash, and food tent, kiosk and
bar staff worked tirelessly to keep the
masses fed and hydrated.
Oh, and on the field of play – three fields
were utilised for the day’s 23 matches –
players did battle against each other in the
true spirit of the game, with referees
controlling matches in admirable style.
RESIDENTS SEE THE LIGHT
After months of darkness, it is good to see
that street lights are back on again in many
parts of Grahamstown. The darkness was
caused by electricity having “t ripped” at
sub-stations, according to the
Grahamstown Residents’ A s s o c i at i o n .
JETTING OFF?
I personally watched as the Jetpatcher
crew (remember them?) repaired potholes
on just one side of Market Street (between
Hill and Bathurst streets) about four weeks
ago. But, for some reason, they did not
venture a few metres to the other side of
the road, which earlier this week sported
dozens of large potholes. I still cannot
figure out why they did not repair both
sides of the street that same day.
Following all the fanfare upon the arrival
of the Jetpatcher pothole-repairing crew in
Grahamstown a few weeks ago, with
residents closely following their progress,
they appear to have left Grahamstown.
From what I’ve read and heard, there are
many other cities and towns in the Eastern
Cape that have similar pothole problems.
Meanwhile, I believe there are moves
afoot to get Jetpatcher back on our streets.
And let me tell you something, if you did
not know it already – there are hundreds, if
not thousands, of potholes eagerly awaiting
their arrival!
BUSY IN THE BOTS
The first major aim for parkrunners, it
would seem, is to complete 50 parkruns
and follow it up with the long haul to
number 100. Several parkrunners who
participated last Saturday are nearing their
50th – Allison Holleman (49), Shane Hazell
(48), John Haydock (48), Priyanka Harjeven
(47), Bryn Reynolds (47), Gregory Shaw
(46) and Sally Price-Smith (46). Further up
the scale, Sydney Moyo has just two
parkruns to go to his 100th.
First finisher out of 150 participants last
Saturday was Nicholas Greeff (20 minutes
34 seconds), second was Enock Mukwekwe
(21:19) and third Daniel Erasmus (21:44).
Charlotte Abraham was first in the ladies’
division (25:49), second was Shimorne
Prince (27:23) and third was Carolyn Grant
(27:56).
AWARD RECIPIENT
Professor Jacqueline Akhurst of the Rhodes
Universit y’s Department of Psychology is
the recipient of the 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s
Distinguished Award for Community
Engagement. The award will be made to
Akhurst at the 2018 Rhodes graduation
ceremonies.
SHORT DRIVE TO THE SHOW
It’s only a 40km drive to the Bathurst
Showgrounds, so why not take a drive
down there to the annual Bathurst
Agricultural Show on April 6 to 8?
BIG KC CONTINGENT FOR FESTIVAL
More than 90 Kingswood College pupils are
on their way to the St Stithian’s College
Easter sports festival in Johannesburg. The
Kingswood players will be involved in
hockey, netball, squash and rugby matches.
Meanwhile, the Kingswood U16 girls’ and
boys’ hockey teams are travelling in the
opposite direction to take part in the
Woodridge College sports festival at
Thornhill.
STARK REMINDER
I was in the 1820 Settlers National
Monument the other day showing visitors
from Durban around and came across this
sign in one of the passageways, finding it
rather interesting. The sign reads: “The wall
along this passage to the Monument
Restaurant was not restored after the fire of
August 13 1994 so that it would serve as a
stark reminder of that disaster which
resulted in damage to the Monument
estimated at R30-million”. However, the
blobs of Prestik stuck to the walls in that
passage are much more recent.
LIGHTNING IN THE ROOM
I attended a function late last week, held in
a rather small room crammed with people.
The use of flash photography was essential.
I and the other photographer present
clicked off a couple of shots when a
would-be heckler among the invited guests
said out aloud something to the effect that
those present took umbrage to the
“lightning flashes” in the room. What an
inane and inappropriate remark that was,
made while the MC was speaking! A first
for me in 38 years of media photography!
ON PENINSULA ROADS
The Two Oceans ultra marathon (56km) and
half marathon (21km) take place on Easter
Saturday. To those Grahamstown runners
who are flying to Cape Town or driving
there – best wishes and good luck.
CHURCH IDENTIFIED
A fortnight ago, I mentioned in this column
the names of churches in Hill Street back in
1966, wondering what the proper name was
of the church which building is now
occupied by Gary’s Refrigeration. Well, HK
says she is sure the church was the
Apostolic Faith Mission, known as the AFM
Church.

HIGH AIM: Border’s Lorna Grotjohn, above, from East London and partner
Kim O’Lear y were 5-1 up at the Kenton Veterans Tennis Tournament, but
in the end, EP’s Pri Bladen and Stelene Serfontein dominated, winning
EP trounces Border
tennis veterans
Men’s A-division bounces back
THE first-ever Veterans Tennis
Tournament between Border and
Eastern Province which was held at
the Kenton Tennis Club on Saturday,
was a walkover for EP.
“Liking clubbing baby seals,” EP
captain Cristel Vosloo from Jeffreys
Bay said.
The EP team took the floating trophy
after winning 505 games to 297
against Border.
It was a different story in the men’s
A-division which Border won 119 to 98.
Border captain Jeremy Blake and
partner Ryan Armstrong defeated EP’s
No1 p l ay e r Roger “Mer v” Ser fontein
and his partner Theo Smith.
Blake and Armstrong were up 7-5
and also won the tiebreaker 7-6.
“Every game counts as the team
with the biggest number of winning
games at the end of the day is the
w i n n e r, ” said Blake.
Vosloo and Blake organised the
Veterans Tennis Tournament while
Kenton Tennis Club’s Derek Moll
organised the catering.
“The hospitality and catering at
Kenton Tennis Club is outstanding,”
said Blake.
Kenton Tennis Club players Tian
Pienaar and Tjaart Coetzee (of Port
Alfred) were roped in for the Border
team and Alke Bradfield (of
28 Main Street - Tel: 046 624 1125
Email: robert.avis@ecmpa.co.za
Grahamstown) played for EP.
The costs of playing in the team,
accommodation in local rental houses
and travel were borne by the tennis
players. Kenton Tennis Club also
benefited from the proceeds of the bar.
“There is a perception that we are
elitist, but there is no segregation.
Anyone can belong to the veterans,”
said Blake.
NET RESULT: Despite EP’s overall
win, Ryan Armstrong, above, and
captain Jeremy Blake were among
the Border players who prevailed in
the A-division at the Kenton
Kenton Bowling Club
THERE was not much formal bowling action
in this past week.
Our project to speed the completion up
our Club Championship matches seems to
bear fruit. Six matches were completed
during the week (which is a record!) and we
are well on our way to announce our Club
Champions before the annual prize-giving.
The third round of the much postponed
(due to rain) Club League was played last
Thursday. Bill Bedford’s team recorded their
first win of the season by beating Dave
We st ’s team 22-19. Brian Aldag’s and his
team mates were the better of Rob Croly’s
team by 26-12. Our greens were quiet on
Saturday. Attendance was impacted
negatively as 12 of our members
participated in the weekend’s first rounds of
the Eastern Areas (EA) mixed pairs
competition held at the Albany club.
Although we had the most entries, none of
our teams were able to advance to the next
rounds. Friday’s attendance draw was
forfeited by Julian Southey and the jackpot
increases to R800 on Friday April 6. There
will be no draw on March 30 as the club is
closed for Good Friday. There will be social
bowls on Monday (Family Day) on April 2.
Whites are optional.
Our club has received eight applications
for new membership. Although some of
them are for social membership, more than
half the applicants have indicated that they
wish to take up bowling more seriously. This
is a very positive phenomenon and is the
first reversal in our membership in the past
five years. We encourage all our members
to actively recruit new members.
Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet
Club
Apologies for no bowls report last week…
this was caused by internet and e-mail
gremlins! The Personal Trust competition,
played on Tuesday March 13, was won by
Ron Orford, Sue Purdon, Allen Thompson
and Garnett Westley with 2nd, 3rd and 4th
prizes being won by John Bennett, Lynda
Schoning and David Freeme with their
teams. The Ocean Basket competition,
played on Tuesday March 20, was won by
Trevor Frost, Emil Jurgenson and Daphne
Wilson. Congratulations to Eddie Senar on
winning the Men’s Senior Singles. The
runner-up was John Hodges – well done all.
The second round of the Vroom and Timm
Cup was played at Kowie with our ladies
winning both of their games and the men
winning two and losing two games.
The EA Mixed Pairs were played in
Grahamstown at the Albany Bowling Club
over the weekend. The Port Alfred Section
winners were David Freeme and Jane
Armitage, Ron Orford and Wendy
ROUNDS four and five of the
Pick n Pay Night Bowls
Competition were played last
Friday in fine weather, with
only a light dew for the night.
Round four was completed
by 7.30pm and the next round
started at 7.45pm.
After the bowls, the Lions
Club sold most of the food
they had made for the night,
which increased their coffers
for their PA School swimming
pool project.
Prize-giving then took place.
First was the swindle draw and
Allan from Pick n Pay won the
bottle of Wild Africa Cream.
Next was the rollover
competition for round four.
The score drawn for the four
ends was “4” and five teams
had this score so it rolls over
to the next round.
Then was the rollover for
round five and the score
drawn was again “4” for the
ends. There were again five
teams with the score so it
becomes another roll over. The
roll over pool has now grown
to R180.
The Performer of the Night
prize for Round four went to
BOWLSBANTER
Saturday April 7 at Port Alfred Bowling Club.
Well done to Anton Strombeck, John
Tournament played on Saturday March 17.
Kowie Bowling Club
We were very shocked and saddened to
hear of the sudden death of Keith Kolesky
this week. Our thoughts are with Lynn and
her family and Edith Blackbeard, Lynn’s
mother. In his short time with us Keith
proved to be a very popular member of
Kowie both on and off the green. He will be
sorely missed by everyone.
The player’s grades have been reviewed
and noted on the reverse side of their tabs.
Since September 2016 all the results of the
Tabs-in games have been recorded with
each player being credited (or debited) with
the result of the game he played in. The
players have since then been assessed on
the basis of their results and allocated into
groups with their peers. There are 12 groups
with groups 1-3 being those who would
normally play lead while groups 10-12 would
normally play skip. Remember that the
player is only being judged on his
performance in a team, eg, pairs, trips, or
fours and his contribution to the welfare of
the team is also a consideration. Actual
playing ability is not the only criteria, eg, we
could have three players with the same
playing ability of say 7. One of them would
be compatible, motivational, supportive, and
contribute positively to the “gees” of the
team. This player would justify an additional
grade to 8. The second player could be
neutral and only justify a 7. The third player
would tend to criticise the other players
argue with the skip about his calls and
generally have a negative influence on the
team. His attitude could easily inspire their
opponents to play better. This player’s
grading could easily be 6. Apart from the
personal traits of the player there can be
variations of form.
Theoretically, if a player’s form is
equivalent to the group he is in then his
side should win as many matches as it
loses, giving the player a score of 100% and
he would stay in the same group. If he is
going through a thin time his contribution to
Leach Pharmacy (from Section
B) for their 6 /+6 win over
BUCO, with PA High school as
the runner-up in this round.
There were no 6 pointers in
the A Section. In Round five,
the performer prize went to
Happy Veg in Section A for
their 6/+11 win over the Round
Table team. There were two
other teams on 6 points for the
night and the runner-up was
Tr e l l i d o r.
The next round of the
competition will take place on
Friday April 13 due to the
Easter weekend and club
the team’s fortunes would be a negative and
his own performance level would be below
80%. He would best serve the system if he
was allocated to a lower group until he
regains his form. In the same way a player
playing above himself and consistently
having a positive influence on his team’s
fortunes will score more than 120% and
should be placed in a higher group
commensurate with his new-found ability
Our system will only succeed while all the
players in a group are playing at the same
level any maverick must be identified and
moved to another group as soon as
possible. Playing in perfect weather we had
another full house for the Tuesday
Mega-bucks last week. The people doing the
draw are smiling again because the majority
of the games were closely fought. The odd
men out were Peter Stegman, Rob Walker,
Lester Scriven, and Ronelle Roome who
went home with the spoils.
On Thursday we hosted our friends from
across the road for our Timm Cup fixture.
The men shared the spoils with two wins
each while the Port Alfred ladies proved too
good and won both games. The “oorskiets”
played on C green and Jonty Alexander,
Lennie Clark, and Pat Joseph were
triumphant. Saturday left the “d r aw e r s ’”
smiling again when four games were won by
one shot only. Mike Tomlinson, Bryan Burger
and Jill Reed upset the apple cart with a big
win. Three trams from Kowie competed in
the EA Mixed Pairs with Jackie Kriel and
Michael van der Sandt winning their section
and qualifying for the next round – well
done.
Duties for next week are not available yet.
CROQUET
CORNER
ROGER and Sue Darkes left last Thursday
for a well-deserved holiday.
Since taking up the reins after the last
AGM, they have put in a lot of very hard
work. Talking of hard work, Peter Wansell
deserves a special mention. He has put in
a lot of valuable work on the croquet
greens.
Last Saturday saw 16 players on the
greens playing some very agreeable
croquet. Hopefully, this level of
attendance will be repeated. Lastly,
birthday greetings go to Sandy for April 6.
Pick n Pay Night Bowls rolled off well
QUITE a few Kowie Striders took
a drive to Bedford this past
weekend to compete in their
local trail run.
Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Well done to Richard Legg and
Rick Betts and their families,
Pauline and Alex Weed and the
Nelson family. Young Rebecca
was the star again.
Lulu Mceka ran the
Mercedes-Benz 15km road race
in East London and is getting
better all the time. Maybe it is
the Sunday club runs that are
helping.
Good luck to Marianne
Stiglingh for the Two Oceans
Marathon this weekend. We are
hoping to see a sub six-hour
time ... no pressure. Husband
Sticks is doing the 21km. Hope
you get a podium finish in your
age group.
The time trial on April 17 will
be something different. No
watches to be worn. Predict your
March 20: Utopian
conditions for golf
ushered 31 players to the
RPAGC on Tuesday
afternoon to play a 3-ball
Stableford alliance on a
“Waltzing Matilda” basis
where just one shot
counted on the 1st, two
shots on the 2nd and
three on the 3rd, then
repeating this order
throughout all 18 holes
(ie, one on the fourth, two
on the fifth and three on
the sixth etc.).
Lindy Wright and Wendy
two covies to make up
3-balls and, with Lindy
having the best round of
her life shooting a nett 63,
claimed both first place
points) and second place
(with Jude Lello on 77
March 24: It was a
pleasantly cool day for
golf although the
westerlies were strong
enough to become an
issue with club selection.
The field of 27 players
was drawn into six mixed
three-ball to play the
usual two-to-count
Stableford Alliance.
Margie Reid, June Bearzi,
Fanie Smit and Guy Cash
were in a league of their
second placed Lynette
Harbrecht, Terry Harris,
Yvonne and Rick Hill were
all of five points off the
It was a more difficult
morning for Lynn West,
Barrie Brady, Di and John
battled to card just 77
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday March 20:
Weather conditions were
tailor made for golf on
Tuesday morning and 43
players answered the call
to play the usual
two-to-count Stableford
alliance drawn into one
three-ball and 10
four-balls. The recent
good rains have
stimulated growth
throughout the course
turning it into a verdant
green and lengthening it
c o n s i d e r a b l y.
Yet 90 points were carded
by Heinz Czepluch, John
Ralph, Terry Harris and
Jimmy van Rensburg to
win the competition,
largely due to some
gratuitous and fortunate
dovetailing. Bryan
Robinson, Steve Kennedy,
Andy Stembridge and
Martin Lambrechts were
just one off the pace on
89.
Finding conditions not to
their liking were Hamer en
Sukkel recipients Richard
Farndell, Bernie van
Loggenberg, Dale Wisener
and Ray Hicks who only
managed to card 77
points and thus be
lumbered with the
dreaded Hamer en Sukkel
trophy at the 19th hole.
Steve Kennedy, Bernie van
Loggenberg and Andy
Manson all managed to to
make birdie on the par
three 8th, but Heinz's long
putt on the stroke seven
13th won the two-club
kitty for his covey.
The best individual
ROB KNOWLES
AFAMILIAR figure, local
differently-abled runner Lungisani
Mtsatse has won many medals and
was, once again, chosen to represent the
Eastern Cape at an athletics meet in
Bloemfontein that began yesterday and
ends on April 3.
The athletics meeting, the 2018 Nedbank
National Championships for Physically
Disabled and Visually Impaired Athletes, is
organised by South Africa Sports
Association for the Physically Disabled
whose objective is to develop and promote
the sporting codes offered at Paralympic
level for athletes with physical disabilities,
visual impairment and blindness.
This year, and for the second time,
Mtsatse will be competing in the 800m
and 400m events.
“I hope to come back with medals as
well as a South African Paralympic
qualifying time,” Mtsatse said.
“I want to make the whole of Port Alfred
and Ndlambe proud.”
Mtsatse said he runs to inspire people,
which he certainly does as any member of
his running club, The Kowie Striders, will
attest. Even local runner and fellow TotT
journalist, Louise Knowles, said she was
shocked to discover that Mtsatse was
disabled.
“I ran with him on the latest parkrun
and, aside from his noticeably-different
style of running, I didn’t realise he was
disabled. He was running faster than most
of the able-bodied athletes,” she said.
Trips like this cost money, and Mtsatse
has been assisted to attend such meetings
in the past.
“I would be very appreciative of people’s
assistance in any way,” he said.
Sportsperson
of the year
JON HOUZET
KOWIE Striders chairman Sticks Stiglingh has
been named sportsperson of the year for
2017-18 by the Port Alfred Country Club.
In his third year as chairman, Stiglingh was
nominated by the Kowie Striders committee.
“He has been instrumental in building the
club to its present high level of membership
and participation,” Rob Joiner said on behalf of
the Kowie Striders committee.
Stiglingh also started and is building the
club’s successful and provincially recognised
development programme.
They also nominated Stiglingh based on his
own achievements at national and provincial
level in road running and cross country,
placing in the top three in his age group at
almost every event he enters.
“He has been extremely successful at
fundraising and obtaining club sponsorship,”
Joiner said.
Stiglingh said as chairman of the club it was
usually up to him to nominate someone, but
was told he had been overruled by his
committee, to find out he was in fact the
nominee.
The runner-up for sportsperson of the year
was Warren Bowdler, a member of the Port
Alfred Cricket Club.
The office bearers elected at the country
club’s AGM are: president James Fox,
vice-president Tanya Seeger, secretary Pauline
Weed and treasurer Sonai Owsley.
The outgoing committee was thanked for
standing. Chris Pike resigned due to work
commitments and was thanked in his absence
for his input to the country club.
The new committee will meet on April 16 at
5pm at the country club.
NCAL gymnasts
outshine most
ROB KNOWLES
NEMATO Change a Life (NCAL)
has realised some incredible
results over the years with
respect to both sports and academic
achievements, and now three of its
trampoline gymnasts are on their
way to Cairo in Egypt to compete in
the African Championships from April
26 to 28.
The championships features
rhythmic, group and trampoline
gymnastics – including tumbling and
double-mini trampoline. This is the
14th African Championships, which
hopes to produce gold medal
gymnasts in the future.
“The most impressive thing,” NCAL
founder Jan Blom said, “is that only
four youth can go to Egypt, and three
of those selected are from our
gymnastics club.”
The three youngsters didn’t just
stumble into their current positions
as leading gymnasts, Blom said, but
have spent years honing their skills
and learning new ones.
The three NCAL youth, Onke
Mangele, Liyema Nxobo and
Siyabulela Siwa, will be joined by
Port Elizabeth gymnast Heidi van der
Poll as they make their inaugural
appearances at the championships.
“These championships are the
trials for the Youth Olympics, the
main stepping stone towards the
Olympic Games,” said Blom, who
explained the rigorous t raining
required for such an event.
“We train hard and the boys are
rewarded with trips to sightsee or to
learn new skills or just about the
world generally.
“We do not have any place to put
our trampoline and it is therefore
subject to the weather; not an ideal
situation but it can’t be helped until
we get to build our new training
facilit y,” Blom said.
Last year, South African Sports
Confederation and Olympic
Committee (Sascoc) president
Gideon Sam visited NCAL and
endorsed its need for a new training
facility for its athletes.
So far, NCAL has had to remain in
a small property in Nemato township.
“Some of the richer clubs have far
better equipment, so it is a credit to
the boys from NCAL that they have
been selected for the
championships,” Blom said.
“Although only one of the four
gymnasts will qualify for entry into
the junior Olympics, we are hopeful it
will be one of our boys.”
Another coup for the area is that
Lee Budler, who coaches the
gymnasts from NCAL, will be the
national coach for the trip to Egypt
as well.
‘U p ro a r ’ of rubber duck and jet ski action
ROB KNOWLES
THE Amanzi Festival, sponsored by the Royal St
Andrews Hotel (RSAH), is finally here, with 10 days of
high-adrenaline international water sports action to
excite, astonish and entertain young and old in Port
Alfred from Good Friday tomorrow to Sunday April 8.
The event opens with the 8km trail run from the
Royal Port Alfred Golf Course and back to the RSAH,
followed shortly thereafter by the famous Marina
Mile swim at the Halyards Hotel on Good Friday
morning.
The first international event will be the
bodyboarding competition, from Good Friday to
Easter Sunday at West Beach, and ending with West
Beach Warfare and the APB World Series
bodyboarding competition on Monday April 2. The
event is a coup for the festival and Port Alfred.
On Saturday and Sunday East Beach will be
roaring with the sound of engines as another
national event – the rubber duck and jet ski races –
take centre stage, another major coup for the area.
And, even more exciting news is that two local
Nemato Change a Life (NCAL) members will be
co-piloting two of the rubber ducks.
Pumlani Kamana and Lifa Nxobo experienced their
first rubber duck training session in late October last
year, and Nxobo visited TotT with NCAL founder Jan
Blom to speak about his time crashing at high-speed
through the waves in and around the marina.
“I was so scared when we first began to practise,”
he said. “The [rubber] ducks move so fast across the
water and, with all the bumps, it’s a job
just to hold on.”
Nxobo said he fell out of the boat
several times during his inaugural practice
session.
Yet now, both he and Kamana are going
to be co-pilots in this high-pace,
adrenaline-pumping sport.
“As a co-pilot you have to know how to keep the
boat balanced. Your time is spent moving around at
the back of the boat to make sure it doesn’t tip over,”
he explained.
In the meantime, the jet ski races will take place in
the river and at East Beach, and the Barnacles
Challenge jet ski race on Sunday should have the
crowds cheering in time.
“This is big, really big,” said Amanzi Festival
co-organiser Zwelinzima “Sxeaks” Nkwinti. “With a
R1-million in prize money sponsored RSAH owners
Martin and Linda Bekker, this is the biggest water
sports event ever to be held in the area. And, over
the next five years we hope to grow it to become the
biggest water sports event in the country.”
It is anticipated that about 6000 additional visitors
will arrive in Port Alfred and surrounding areas as a
result of the Amanzi Festival, and estate agents are
now asking individual home-owners if additional
accommodation can be found with them.
“The guest houses and hotels are
completely booked up due to the Easter
holidays and this event,” confirmed
Graeme Sunny Hill of Remax in Port
Alfred.
So, get out your sun hats (and maybe
an umbrella or two, as the forecast for
tomorrow is rain) and make sure you do not miss a
single enthralling second of all the action at East and
West beaches this holiday season and beyond.
A full programme of the events can be found on
the Talk of the Town website. Visit
