SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday April 18 2018 11 Donation helps pupils be seen • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HIGH-VIS fluorescent vests have been given to a primary school in Rolleston to ensure its pupils are seen on the roads during busy peak hour traffic. Professional Christchurch Ltd licensed agent Sean Powell and licensed real estate salesperson Anna James donated 500 fluorescent vests to West Rolleston School last week. The school is considering making the vests a compulsory part of its uniform when pupils are travelling to and from the school. Mr Powell said he and Mrs James approached several schools in Rolleston about sponsoring the vests, and West Rolleston took them up on the offer. The idea was inspired by Lincoln Primary School, which currently has school vests, where Mrs James’ children attend school. Mr Powell and Mrs James both have long associations with Rolleston, having sponsored recent initiatives including the Clearview Primary School fair candy floss stall and the Selwyn School of Dance end-of-year production. “We love working in Rolleston and believe that it is also important to give back a little to the community and this was our way BRIGHT: Pupils Sean Powell and Anna James from Professional Christchurch, with pupils Darby Greene, Libby Clarkson, Kingsley Ojukwu and Jake Douglas in their new high-vis fluorescent vests. PHOTO: GILBERT WEALLEANS to do that,” Mr Powell said. He said safety around schools at drop-off and pick-up times is an important topic and they are proud to be able to promote traffic safety. “We are proud to be able to help the children at West Rolleston stand out a little bit more and be noticeable at these crucial and potentially dangerous times,” he said. Both Mr Powell and Mrs James specialise in residential sales in Rolleston and greater Selwyn. The donation of vests will remain available to other schools in Rolleston. If you are interested in getting vests for your school, email sean@prof.co.nz or anna@prof. co.nz SCHOOLS Scholarship awarded in honour of late Lincoln student THE UNTIMELY death of a former Lincoln University student was commemorated last week as the first recipient of a memorial scholarship in his name graduated with a degree in winemaking. Katrina Jackson received the Nikolas Dow Memorial Scholarship in 2014 and gained a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln’s graduation ceremony on Friday. Nikolas Dow, known as Niki, graduated five years ago with his own BVO after coming to Lincoln from Auckland’s St Kentigern College. He had been working in 2013 at a vineyard in Portugal, where he and another winemaker were tragically killed in a car crash. Friday’s event was made all the more poignant for Katrina by the presence of Niki’s parents, Maria and Clive Dow, who flew down from Auckland to see her receive her qualification. “It’s so exciting to have them here to celebrate with me,” Katrina said before the ceremony.
