No fix for roads near pie shop
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
LONG-STANDING roading
issues are unlikely to be fixed
outside The Famous Sheffield Pie
Shop.
Nearly a year ago, the community
was calling for the road layout
close to the shop be changed
before an accident happened.
It asked for the New Zealand
Transport
Agency and
the district
council to
change the
layout of State
Highway 73,
Loretta
Duke and
Vogel Sts.
Concern was
raised that a
growing number of cars and
trucks were parking “dangerously”
outside the shop.
The Sheffield Waddington
Community Committee previously
asked for “no parking” on
the left side of SH73 travelling
west between Malvern Hills Rd
and the pie shop.
But NZTA senior traffic and
safety engineer David Scarlett
said while there was some initial
discussion on managing parking
off SH73 it had not heard any
more from affected parties.
Other suggestions were lowering
the speed limit from 70km/h
to 50km/h and making adjacent
street, Duke St, one-way with
vehicles exiting via Vogel St.
While the speed limit will not
be lowered, NZTA has plans to
install new speed threshold signs
which draw attention to the
existing speed limit.
Pie shop owner Loretta Paterson
said she was told by the
district council the money was
not there to upgrade Duke St
and most likely won’t be in the
future due to other priorities.
Mrs Paterson said it would be
nice to have the potholes fixed
and some kerbing put in place
along Duke St.
“It is either that or we pay for
Duke St to be upgraded ourselves
and for us that is a lot of
money, and a lot of pies we have
to sell to be able to provide that
sort of money,” she said.
It comes as the pie shop
recently had a resource consent
approved to extend its bakery.
The shop is transforming its
