Have your say on Redcliffs
• By Sarla Donovan
A PUBLIC drop-in session
today will give people the chance
to comment on plans for the
Redcliffs village enhancement
project.
The project is now in the
design phase and has three main
focus areas: Safety improvements
on Main Rd, creating a userfriendly
environment within
the village and upgrading the
Moncks Bay car parking area.
Redcliffs Residents Association
member Peter Croft said it
was important that people got
involved and made submissions
on the plans.
“We want to say (to the city
council) yes, we’ve been waiting
now for a long time, we’ve
been very badly affected by
the earthquakes, we’ve had our
school taken from us and now
it’s our turn,” he said.
“We want the upgrading and
beautification of the shopping
centre. The city council talk
about Redcliffs being a corridor
on the way to Sumner but
we’re saying to them we are a
destination in our own right.”
Streetscape enhancements
shown in the city council’s
concept plans include extending
the pavement outwards at
the Beachville Rd/Main Rd
intersection.
This would create space for
seating and cycle parking to
encourage Coastal Pathway
users to stop and visit, the plan
suggests.
Trees could be planted to
area from the butcher down to
the fish and chip shop building
paved, to unify the village centre.
Further along, on the south
side of Moncks Bay about 200m
east of the Christchurch Yacht
Club, plans show an upgraded,
20-space car park and a nearby
pedestrian island for Main Rd.
The enhancement project
is part of the Main Rd Master
Plan, adopted by the city council
in 2014 with the purpose of
improving the safety and overall
look of the commercial centres
and activity points along the
route.
Some changes have already
been made during SCIRT
repairs and as part of progress
on the Coastal Pathway,
including the traffic signals on
Augusta St.
Urumau Reserve plan on hold
Community
board seeks
more detail
• By Sarla Donovan
AN UPDATED development
plan for Lyttelton’s Urumau
Reserve has been put on hold.
The Banks Peninsula
Community Board rejected
the city council staff
recommendation to adopt the
plan at a special meeting on
Monday.
Board
chairwoman
Pam Richardson
said it wanted
more background
information on
the work that
Pam
Richardson
has been done
on tracks, trails
and other areas of
development in the reserve.
She would not specify what
type of information the board
is seeking, saying only that it
needed “further clarification” on
some issues.
“All the work that’s been done
in the reserve, we just wanted a
bit more background on it.”
The aim of the development
plan, originally created in 2008,
was to increase public access
and use of the reserve, control
pests and weeds, and enhance
the township’s natural landscape
and birdlife.
Developments in the 10 years
since then have included new
mountain bike tracks, steps
and signage, native plant revegetation,
weed control and a
developing pest management
strategy.
Ms Richardson said the
board had raised a number of
questions with city council staff
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
over historical development in
the reserve, and it was now a
matter of waiting for them to
come back with answers.
The plan would be approved
when the board members had
“enough information,” she said.
There is no timeframe in place
at the moment, Ms Richardson
said, and “it might take some
time to work through.”
A city council report on
the proposed plan said it had
attracted an “unexpected” level
of public interest, with 625
Cob Cottage repairs get
green light from council
HISTORIC PENFOLD’S Cob
Cottage will be repaired.
The city council has approved
the project to repair the
earthquake-damaged 19thcentury
cottage.
Work will include stabilising
the remaining heritage fabric.
Some badly-damaged sections
will be encased in glass to
provide protection.
“We are moving quickly to
protect this landmark cottage
and preserve our past,” city
council head of parks Brent
Smith said.
“With this approach, we can
retain some of the cottage’s
original sod and cob fabric and
keep the site’s history alive.”
He said it would showcase the
simplicity and workmanship of
the early European settler homes.
“Securing a window to the
early days of our city.”
A cob trail and stronger links
with Ferrymead Heritage Park
have also been proposed for the
cottage.
OLD SCHOOL:
The band
during
marching
practice with
new silver
instruments in
1951.
Band seeks new blood
• By Sarla Donovan
ONE OF the oldest brass bands
in Canterbury is on the hunt for
new blood.
The Sumner Brass Band
started in the 1880s and played
together until World War 2.
In 1950, a public meeting
decided the district should once
again have a brass band of its
own. The Sumner Silver Band
was born under bandmaster
G.F. Sauer (the father of John
Sauer who retired from playing
cornet at the end of last year).
Sumner has had its silver band
on and off ever since.
Peter Croft has played with
them for the past 18 years. He
said the reason for the name
change could be because
initially brass was cheaper than
silver plated – but they were now
about the same.
“Maybe brass was working
class and silver sounded better.
When new instruments were
supplied in 1950 they were silver.”
The band meets for practice
once a week on Thursday evenings,
7.30-9pm, at the Redcliffs
Mt Pleasant Bowling Club.
It’s comprised of a range of
people from all ages including
primary school pupils right
up to those “one step from the
morgue,” said Mr Croft.
Over the past year, the band
has performed at school fairs,
community concerts, and the
city council’s Summertime
Festival.
Upcoming events include the
Anzac service for the Sumner/
Redcliffs RSA and a combined
concert with the Christchurch
Pipe Band next month.
The Sumner Silver Band also
enters local and provincial competitions.
Mr Croft said anyone
able to read music and play a
‘brass’ instrument is welcome
to join.
WORK ON the Lyttelton Tunnel
safety upgrade will require up
to 15 overnight tunnel closures
from June onwards.
The New Zealand Transport
Agency say installation of a
$28.7 million fire protection
system is ramping up, with a
planned December completion
date on the horizon.
Emergency services will have
full access through the tunnel
at all times and community and
tunnel users will be given at least
three weeks notice prior to the
full closures, the NZTA said.
The new deluge fire supression
system is designed to contain
a fire until emergency services
reach the scene.
A large reservoir is being built
to supply water for the system.
And some earthquake
strengthening of the tunnel
portal buildings will be carried
out, along with communication
equipment upgrades.
These include a new public address
system to broadcast safety
instructions to tunnel users in
an emergency.
Construction has almost been
completed on a pump house,
and ground work for the water
reservoir has started.
Work is on track to with the
laying a 200m long pipe to feed
water from the reservoir to the
pump house.
Cave Rock
goes vegan
• By Sarla Donovan
SUMNER’S CAVE Rock Tavern
is having a healthy makeover.
Formerly known as The Thirsty
Marriner, it will next month
transform into a fully plantbased
cafe/bar/restaurant called
Auberge - a nod to the French
inns which often transform from
day to night, restaurant manager
Naomi Darvill said.
“They start as a cafe and
throughout the day you work
through a lunchtime menu and
then in the evening it transforms
into a folk-music-playing wine bar
and locals hangout.”
From 8am there’ll be smoothie
bowls, healthy cabinet food and
cooked breakfasts; burgers, pizzas
and raw salads over lunch and
into the evening bar snacks and
seasonal blackboard specials
complementing the lunch menu.
“We’re going for seasonal,
organic and locally sourced so
the blackboard will be changeable
every couple of days. We’ve got a
couple of really creative chefs on
board,” said Ms Darvill.
They are also looking at being a
live music venue and have booked
a couple of local acts for May.
Ms Darvill describes the look
as funky and colourful with an
eclectic botanical theme.
The 1011 sq m Purau Maori Reserve at
city council, which is considering returning
ownership to local rūnanga.
The land has significance to Te
Hapū o Ngāti Wheke.
As the reserve is an urupā – a Ngāi
Tahu burial ground – Ngāti Wheke
has expressed a preference that it
be managed by court-appointed
Rāpaki trustees, who already have
responsibility for three other urupā
in Lyttelton Harbour.
There have been ongoing discussions
about returning ownership and
management of the Pūrau urupā over the
past century.
The land currently has reserve status,
and returning ownership to the rūnanga
would involve removing this under the
Reserves Act 1977.
involved in revoking the reserve status of
the land.
This would include public notification
making a recommendation to the
revocation.
Felix If the process to revoke the
Dawson reserve status goes ahead, handover
from the city council to Te Hapū o
year.
Board member Felix Dawson said it was
an important issue.
“Given the significance of this piece of
land to Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke we believe
it’s appropriate for the board and the
community to give serious consideration
to its return to local rūnanga.”
Vicki Jerome – Haven’t
seen any mozzies around here,
even around the fishpond, but
this summer, for the first time
ever in our area, i have noticed
sandflies. Early in summer, I
was hanging out the washing
on our rural property inside the
volcanic rim of Banks Peninsula,
just above Barrys Bay, when I
noticed a sharp sensation around
my ankle that reminded me
of sandfly bites I’d only ever
experienced before on the West
Coast. Looking down, I saw that
indeed, that’s what it was. After
that, almost every time I hung
washing out, I was attacked by
one or more of the little horrors
– I have to confess, I squashed
them all, at least those I could
catch in time.
And so brilliant she even was
a voice and more power to her
I regularly walk in Heathcote
and collect trash along the
way. We were tired of saying
how disgusting the litter was
and decided to be a part of the
solution by picking it up.
People should definitely be
fined for littering, young
people educated more, and new
immigrants (especially from
countries that are very relaxed
with rubbish rules) be warned
that New Zealand takes a very
dim view on littering. And we
can all make a small change by
firstly not littering and, secondly,
by simply picking rubbish up
and taking it home to dispose of
properly.
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart
by Holly Ringland
The most enchanting debut novel of 2018, this is an
irresistible, deeply moving and romantic story of a young
girl, daughter of an abusive father, who has to learn the
hard way that she can break the patterns of the past, live on
her own terms and find her own strength.
THIS BOOK
After her family suffers a tragedy, nine-year-old Alice Hart is forced to leave her idyllic
seaside home. She is taken in by her grandmother, June, a flower farmer who raises
Alice on the language of Australian native flowers, a way to say the things that are too
hard to speak.
Under the watchful eye of June and the women who run the farm, Alice settles, but
grows up increasingly frustrated by how little she knows of her family’s story. In her
early twenties, Alice’s life is thrown into upheaval again when she suffers devastating
betrayal and loss. Desperate to outrun grief, Alice flees to the dramatically beautiful
central Australian desert. In this otherworldly landscape Alice thinks she has found
solace, until she meets a charismatic and ultimately dangerous man.
Spanning two decades, set between sugar cane fields by the sea, a native Australian
flower farm, and a celestial crater in the central desert, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart
follows Alice’s unforgettable journey, as she learns that the most powerful story she
will ever possess is her own.
Hunting El Chapo:
Taking Down the World’s Most-Wanted Drug Lord
by Andrew Hogan, Douglas Century
This is the incredible story of D.E.A. Special Agent Andrew Hogan’s seven-year-long
chase to capture El Chapo, a multibillionaire drug-lord and escape-artist posing as a
Mexican Robin Hood, who in reality was a brutal sociopath responsible for the murders
of thousands. His greedy campaign to take over his rivals’ territories resulted in an
unprecedented war with a body count of over 100,000.
M Rule – Firstly, no
mention that this was
originally a bay and part
of the estuary and filled
in as a rubbish dump.
City council rules were no
building on dump sites. What
has changed? Some years
ago, a high school on the
McCormacks Bay dump site
was planned – the city council
disallowed this. What has
changed?
The site is beside a very
dangerous estuary with many
drownings to its credit and
we all know how children are
attracted to water.
Who will be responsible
book
release
We follow Hogan on his quest to achieve the seemingly impossible: to cross the border
into Mexico and arrest El Chapo, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a billionaire and
Public Enemy No. 1, who had been evading capture for more than a decade and had
earned a reputation for being utterly untouchable.
This intimate thriller tells how Hogan single-mindedly and methodically climbed the ladder within the hierarchy of the Sinaloa
Cartel – the world’s wealthiest and most powerful drug-trafficking organization – by creating one of the most sophisticated
undercover operations in the history of the D.E.A. From infiltrating Chapo’s inner circle to leading a white-knuckle manhunt with
an elite brigade of Mexican Marines, Hogan left no stone unturned in his hunt for the world’s most powerful drug kingpin.
SHIFTING: Some readers have questioned the suitability of Redcliffs Park as the proposed new home for
Redcliffs School.
and in charge once children
have left the school for home?
Particularly as it has been
decided that
they will use
the coastal
pathway?
Many
questions
have not
been
addressed by
the school on
this matter.
Colin
and Emma
Lumb –
While we could have done
without the stress and hours
of work over the past few years
to keep our local school, we
are now so close to making
real tangible progress with
having our
kura and our
kids back in the
neighbourhood.
The Ministry of
Education has
confirmed that
the buildings
would be
mainly situated
on a building
platform up
by Main Rd,
at a similar
height to the
old site on the other side of
the road. There are many
potential positives about the
Redcliffs Park site, especially
the proximity to the coastal
pathway and the natural
classroom of the estuary itself.
Regarding concerns about
flooding, with buildings at
the higher level and access
from Main Rd, minor events
would be managed as at many
schools around the country.
Anything more significant
would likely be part of broader
scale disruption around
the neighbourhood and the
region.
As for the tsunami risk,
with the location being only
the width of the road away
from the old site, the risk and
consequent plans for either site
are similar.

Real Hope For Long Term
Back Pain Sufferers
After more than ten years in
New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups
have now gained a reputation
for success with long-term
sufferers of Back pain. Inversion
New Zealand was started
by Dave and Nancy Hare,
Dave had suffered over
twenty years of back pain
from Degenerated Discs and
had basically given up and
decided to just live with it. “To
me surgery was never an
option” he said “as long as I
still could walk, there was
hope”.
Dave had tried everything;
every time he was overseas
he would search for anything
that could possibly help.
While on one of these
overseas trips ten years ago,
Dave discovered the Teeter
Hang-Ups. “The first time I
tried it, the pain disappeared
and I was completely pain
free for about 30 minutes,
nothing had done that” he
told me. Dave never believed
it would fix him, “as specialists
had told me it was irreversible,
I now knew I had a place
to go every time I wanted
some serious relief”.
To Dave’s surprise the more
he used the table the longer
the pain stayed away, until
after nearly three months he
was completely pain free, “I
couldn’t believe it’ he told me
“I had spent large amounts of
money on every form of treatment
available and here
was something I had never
heard of sorting it out for
me in a very short period of
time” It was then Dave
decided to introduce Teeter
into New Zealand and Inversion
NZ was born.
Over the years INZ have
helped thousands of people
get some serious relief and
have seen results in not only
backs, but necks, hips,
knees, posture, circulation,
increased height, blood
pressure and lots more.
“We have testimonials from
people with over fifty years
of back problems and even
have them in a number of
schools in New Zealand for
their special needs children”
he told me, “the blood to the
brain helps these kids and
the results are excellent”
What this means for the
aging population is that it
helps maintain the health of
the brain as we all get older.
Dave told me that he
realised that, had he not
tried the Teeter for himself
he would still be suffering, “I
would still be a miserable
grumpy bugger, living with
pain, that is why we do the
shows, people need to try it
for themselves” he told me
“most people actually get
off with the pain either gone
or considerably less” he said
“we let the tables do the
talking”
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW
THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction,
the traction gently opens the discs and as
they open up they create suction, this
suction draws fluid from the surrounding
tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating
them. This is the key! Discs do not have
their own blood supply, they rely on transfer
of fluid from the surrounding tissue to
keep them healthy and hydrated and over
the years as discs get thinner with age, they
lose the ability to take on fluid (just like
squeezing a sponge) and they start to
de-hydrate.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are
harder, more prone to injury, they interfere
with nerve roots creating pain and
ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration.
The Teeter Inversion table slowly
and gently brings the hydration back into
the discs, plumping them up. This brings
back lost height (most people will regain
around 2 CM of height), it separates the
nerve roots far more effectively and returns
quality of life
Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when
muscles are stressed they become tight
which restricts the flow of blood and lymph
through the muscles so toxins build up,
Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the
muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle
rocking motion that stimulates circulation
and encourages blood flow through the
muscles, which clears the lactic acid into
your lymph system where it stimulates
lymph flow and deals with it. Most people
with serious neck issues see a large
improvement after only one treatment.
Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been
Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young
Posture: Poor posture is one of the
major cases of pain and is a major contributor
to the deterioration of the body with
age. A difference in leg length causes most
of the hip and knee issues, as they continue
to place uneven loads on the joints;
similar to the wheels out of alignment on
your car.
Trying to correct posture is extremely
difficult due to muscle memory, as it
constantly pulls the muscles back to where
they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more
on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up
and eventually come back into alignment,
using the table daily, does not allow the
muscle memory to pull them back out of
alignment and slowly the muscles start to
lose their memory and go with the flow,
allowing the body to come back into
correct posture. Then using the table once a
day will ensure it is kept there.
This is pure logic, if a machine is out of
alignment it does not last long, the only
difference between the body and a
machine is that the body is constantly
repairing itself, however if the wear and
tear on the body is greater than the body’s
ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.
The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its
decline and allows the body to repair itself,
resulting in a far healthier life.
health and really sorting your issues out,
Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most
respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on
how humans experience pain and then
researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your
Back" and then spent a few years researching
neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote
"Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine",
both books are in most bookstores.
Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the
disc is the most likely source of low back pain
and Inversion showed the best results of all the
trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60%
reduction in pain and one showed a 75%
reduction in surgery for people with disc
prolapse.
Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method
to manage back pain, he has personally been
using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own
low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at
both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports
and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that
he is now conducting the largest study in the
World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words,
"these things are gold and inversion should be
a first line treatment for low back pain”.
Fines for
illegal
fishing
A STRING of offending in
Canterbury’s two marine
reserves over summer has
prompted warnings from the
Department of Conservation
to check the location of marine
reserves before going fishing.
Last week, four Canterbury
men were prosecuted and fined
in the district court for illegally
fishing in one of these reserves.
Grant Richard Burgess,
James Cunningham, Sean Cunningham
and Mark Donald
Macalister pleaded guilty to
charges of taking marine life
from Pōhatu Marine Reserve
on the southeast side of Banks
Peninsula.
DOC rangers on a routine
boat patrol of the reserve saw
the offenders fishing from
two separate boats in January.
The men told the rangers they
weren’t aware of the marine
reserve.
Their fines ranged from $500
to $750 plus court costs, and
Judge MacAskill said there was
no reasonable excuse for their
actions and they ought to have
made sure what protected areas
there were in the locality.
National
List MP Nuk
Korako writes
about how
the legacy
of those who
fought in
World War
1 and other
conflicts continues through
our faithful remembrance
on Anzac Day
APRIL 25 marks the anniversary
of the Anzac landing on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915.
We remember and honour our
2779 New Zealanders who were
killed on the battlefields of Gallipoli
and those who served and
returned.
We also remember our Australian
brothers who fought and
died beside New Zealanders not
only at Gallipoli but in many
other conflicts far from home.
First commemorated in 1916 in
remembrance of those who died
in that campaign, Anzac Day has
come to signify so much more.
I saw the evidence of this personally
when, in my previous career
in tourism, I developed and
escorted four Hikoi Maumahara
– Journeys of Remembrance
following in the footsteps of the
New Zealand pioneer and 28 th
Maori Battalion.
I have stood on the battlefields
of Gallipoli, Passchendaele,
Messines, the Somme, El
Alamein, Tobruk, Tebaga Gap
(where 2 nd Lieutenant Moana
Nui a Kiwa won his Victoria
Cross), Crete, Cassino, Orsonga,
Florence, Faenza and Trieste,
and visited the graves where so
many New Zealanders rest in
foreign soil.
We were accompanied on
those tours by several veterans
of the 28 th Maori Battalion and
many whanau members. Those
families brought with them the
only physical connections they
had left of their loved ones in
the form of medals won on the
battlefields we visited, letters,
bibles and photos, along with the
dreaded telegrams informing
them of the death of loved ones.
Local
News
Now
Remembering our fallen ‘brothers’
Fire rages, homes at risk
To me personally, it was a
powerful reminder of the value
of those individual memories
from those global events, and
the original documents and
keepsakes that have been carried
through the generations.
Truly family taoka or
treasures. My wife Chris and I
travelled to Europe on our own
hikoi to find my great uncle’s
grave and when we finally found
his resting place outside the town
of Armentieres on the Belgium-
French boarder, we had a tangi
and karakia to give him the
poroporoaki (farewell) that he
had never had, and before leaving
we placed a piece of Arahura
pounamu (greenstone) at the
foot of his headstone.
We all carry the legacy of our
grandparents, parents and family
members who fought for our
country and it is our responsibility
to ensure that our children
carry that legacy forward to the
next generation.
Today e hoa ma (friends),
we continue with that legacy
through our faithful remembrance
of Anzac Day. This is
a time to honour our morehu
(veterans) contributions to the
peace, freedom and security our
country enjoys today.
We will remember them.
Protecting
vulnerable children
Individuals or organisations that receive
state funding and deal with children
should already be familiar with the
Vulnerable Children Act 2014. The
provisions of the Act are being phased
in over a period with obligations to
be complied with by July 1, 2018 and
July 1, 2019. The Act applies to most
organisations that employ or engage
workers to provide regulated services
to children under the age of 18 (and 21
where the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989
applies). For those who are affected, it is
important to remain vigilant in ensuring
you meet your legislative obligations.
The Act has wide application and it is
easy to be caught by its provisions.
If you receive State funding, whether
direct or indirect, and carry out
“regulated services” such as welfare
services, education services, health
services, transport services, or any
services specified by the Act, then you
may be bound to comply with the Act.
The Act is part of an effort to promote
the well-being of children and provide
a safer environment for them. Affected
organisations must have a child
protection policy in place and carry out
mandatory periodic safety checks for
anyone defined as a “children’s worker”.
If you don’t already have a policy in
place, the Government has issued a list
of regulations that may be adopted.
These regulations can be accessed
online.
From an employer’s perspective, it is
important to understand the distinction
between “core workers” and “noncore
workers”. Core workers work
alone with children, and have primary
care and responsibility over them.
Non-core workers have regular but
limited contact and are never left alone
with children. If a core worker has a
conviction for an offence specified in
the Act (for example, indecent assault,
wounding with intent), then that
individual will not be able to work with
children unless they have been granted
an exemption.
All existing core workers must have
checks completed by July 1, 2018 and
all existing non-core workers need
checks completed by July 1, 2019.
A breach may result in a conviction with
a maximum fine of up to $50,000.
If you have an existing policy in place,
it is recommended that you review it.
If you don’t have a policy in place but
think the Act may apply to you, taking
action is recommended to ensure you
meet your obligations. Young Hunter’s
Adam Curtin provides advice on these
matters and can assist you if you have
queries.
its annual
Red Rose
Day. Member Barbara
Crooks writes about
the fundraiser
FIVE THOUSAND roses
were sold in Christchurch
and 6000 in rural
Canterbury and on the
West Coast.
Red Cross has been selling
roses for more than 30
years.
For a gold coin, you
could have a red rose for a
loved one, for your granny,
or for someone else who
takes your fancy.
Recipients’ faces certainly
light up when they
are given a rose. One
couple fell into a passionate
embrace and kiss.
One woman bought five
roses, gave one to each
person manning the stall,
took two to other shoppers
and one for herself.
Many people said they
were so grateful for what
Red Cross did after the
earthquakes that they
readily donate for a rose;
some even donated and
didn’t take a rose.
Red Cross certainly does
plenty in the community.
Take 2017 in Canterbury
and on the West Coast for
instance: 174,676 meals
on wheels delivered; 3022
children given free, basic
first-aid training; 4351
people driven to appointments;
four lives saved
through Red Cross-provided
defibrillators; 11,000
hazard/first-aid apps
downloaded; 36 response
volunteers trained and 39
former refugees helped
into work.
“We couldn’t do what
we do without the help of
volunteers and groups like
Rotary,” said Fiona Sawers,
Canterbury West Coast
Our People
Estella Hungerford
Young surfer hungry for more
Sumner’s Estella
Hungerford won the
under-16 girls division
in the Emerson’s
South Island surfing
championship in Dunedin
over Easter, hopefully
cementing her chances
of being selected for the
New Zealand team to
travel to the International
Surfing Association world
junior championships.
Sarla Donovan catches
up with the 16-year-old
You must be feeling good
coming off a couple of
divisional wins in Dunedin and
at the recent Duke Festival of
Surfing – what does it mean for
you going forward?
I do have a good placing
at the moment in the overall
New Zealand rankings. I just
moved into second after this
last win, which is good going
into when they choose the ISA
team. Each country takes I
think two girls and four boys
for each age division, and they
compete with every other
surfing nation in the world. It’s
at national representative level
which I’ve never done before. My
friend Tegan did and she said
it was amazing going to see the
different cultures and different
places. It’s in Tokyo this year. I
think I find out near the end of
May (if I’m in the team.)
Can you remember your first
time on a surfboard?
Not really, I think I was quite
young. I didn’t really get into it
until I was about 11 and then I
really enjoyed it. I did my first
competition that summer, the
women’s Canterbury champs,
and I got third and was pretty
stoked and that kind of kicked
everything off. Competitions are
great; you get to meet so many
cool people and it’s a good way to
improve your surfing and go to
lots of new places.
SUCCESS: Estella Hungerford currently ranks second in New Zealand’s under-16 surfing division.
It’s not something you took to
straight away, so what is it you
like about surfing?
My dad and step mum (Stoked
Surf School owner Donna
Henderson) taught all their six
kids at the same time so it was a
real family thing which I really
enjoy, it’s a good way to spend
time with them. That’s probably
a lot bigger than my competition
drive, getting to spend time with
them each weekend in the water.
All the kids can surf. I’m the
oldest, then the youngest is eight,
then there’s two 10-year-olds and
then the two girls are 13 and 12.
Two of them – the middle child
from each family – aren’t that
into it but they still come out all
the time.
Are you competitive among
yourselves?
Ava, who is 12, pushes me a lot;
she’s pretty hardcore and I love
surfing with her, she’s hilarious,
and she pushes me. There’s a
bit of friendly competition but
nothing too serious.
So you’ve carried on
competing since that first one?
My dad was really good; he
took me all over the South Island
first and then we ventured up
to the North Island surfing
competitions. It’s different up
there, all the girls generally
come from really strong surfing
backgrounds and have been
surfing since they were quite
young. The waves are a lot
warmer and there’s some pretty
amazing breaks. Not that there’s
none down here, but it’s a pretty
high level of competition.
How good is it being able to
compete with your step mum
and sister?
It’s definitely good to have
their support. Mainly me and
Ava at the moment, but the
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
younger kids will eventually
get into it. Dad and Donna just
bought a campervan so that we
don’t spend as much money on
accommodation and flights.
We’re away a lot of the time so
it’s getting a lot of use. It does
get quite messy at times. But it’s
pretty good.
What’s your proudest
achievement so far?
I was pretty stoked to get my
first national level win this year
at Whangamata and then backed
it up with two others, which was
even more amazing. So it’s been
a good year so far.
success on the water
How much time do you spend
on the water each week?
I try to get out at least once
a day. I used to surf every day
before school but it’s quite dark
at the moment and getting a bit
cold so I usually go once after
school and try to get two surfs
in on Saturdays and Sundays.
I’ve been trying to go out in all
conditions lately because, at
competitions, quite often the
waves are really bad so you’ve got
to get used to surfing in all types.
Surfing has been dominated
by men for a long time but that
seems to be changing – why
do you think more girls and
women are getting into it?
Maybe the female role models
have just improved so much
lately like (pro-surfers) Stephanie
Gilmore and Carissa Moore
kind of leading the way on
the women’s ASP world tour. I
reckon it’s a lot easier now than
it used to be for girls. Donna is a
big advocate for women’s surfing
which is good, she pushes that
a lot, especially in the South
Island.
How is it different competing
as a women – are the
competitions organised any
differently?
Not really – there’s generally
not as many women, but at the
Duke Festival in the longboard
division there were more entries
than the men’s so they decided
to make the prize money equal
which was really cool. They do
have a lot of men’s divisions
and I do know that quite a few
of the girls were annoyed that
there wasn’t an open women’s
longboard or women’s SUP
(stand-up paddleboard) at the
South Island’s this year. Someone
I know went in the men’s SUP
as ‘Luke’ instead of Lucy so
she could complete which was
really cool, we all supported her.
She didn’t get through but she
definitely had fun.
Is it your goal to be a prosurfer?
I’m not sure. I don’t think so,
but I’ll see what happens. I might
try and do a couple of overseas
competitions and see how I do. I
want to go to university, but I’m
not sure what I want to study.
But I reckon Ava will probably
go pretty far because she’s a lot
younger than me and is at a
much higher level than I was at
her age. It would be cool to see
her go professional.
I’ve heard people describe
surfing as a lifestyle rather than
a sport. What is it for you?
It’s definitely a bit of a lifestyle,
you’re chasing waves a lot trying
to find the best swell. I think it
only really becomes a sport when
you do it competitively and the
rest of the time it’s generally a
lifestyle.
Do people have preconceptions
about you because
you surf?
If I’m paddling out and there’s
a lot of males in the line-up, I’ll
try to get a really good first wave
so that they don’t drop in on me
thinking I’m just a girl who can’t
surf. But my friends at school
don’t really know what it means
so I kind of try to educate them –
it doesn’t always work.
Can you describe what it feels
like to ride a wave?
Well, on a really big wave, you
get a big rush of adrenaline. It’s
an amazing feeling and then, if
you do a really good turn, you’ll
definitely feel awesome; like if
I do a really amazing turn off
and then jump off the wave,
I’ve got a massive smile on my
face because it feels amazing.
But I don’t really know how to
describe it.
Do you have any tips for
beginners?
Get out there as much as you
can. It’s definitely important
to ride the right board. A lot of
people jump on a really small
board because they see the pros
riding it but you definitely try
and start on a really big board.
A soft-top is really good
because it doesn’t hurt. And it’s
helpful to surf with someone
Clair, Dunedin, over Easter.
COM
who’s better than you to improve.
That’s why I like surfing with the
guys out in the water because
they push me a lot.
What’s your favourite place
to surf?
On the West Coast at Fox
River there’s this amazing lefthand
point break, but after the
big storms they’ve had there it’s
not that great at the moment, so
we’re hoping for another storm
to push the banks back up and
make it good again.
If you’re not out surfing,
where would we find you?
That’s a hard question. I just
read a lot, I don’t really do
a lot other than surfing. I’ll
generally just be with my family
somewhere. I go to school at
Haeata Community Campus.
I was at Aranui High School
before it changed to Haeata and
I found it hard to get used to at
first but I really like it now. I can
work at my own level and don’t
have to be held back by annoying
people in my class. And there’s a
lot of one-on-one learning which
suits my style.
What are your favourite
subjects at school?
We don’t really have subjects
but I do enjoy science. And
maths because it challenges me.
Career-wise I don’t know. I want
to go to Otago to study because
they’ve got really good waves
down there, but I don’t know
what I want to study yet.
If you weren’t a surfer, what
would you be?
Probably doing some other
sport like netball or rugby,
something like that, maybe
cricket. Surfing takes up most of
my time, but I do enjoy it so I’m
not missing out.
Strong results for local surfers as winter sets in
Aaron Lock reports on the
Canterbury men’s champs
results at the weekend and
the grom series
THE FIVE days of southerlies
last week were a shock to the
system but the silver lining
was the pumping waves we
had over the weekend. Friday
and Saturday saw perfect lines
marching into Sumner and in
spite of the cold temperatures, it
was very busy in the water.
The change from 2mm to
4mm wetsuits in just a week took
a bit of adjusting to as well. The
water temperature is around 14
• By Gordon Findlater
THE SUMNER wave is rolling
after they notched their second
win from as many outings in the
Hawkins Metro Premier Cup.
But problems at first-five could
lead to an interesting brand of
rugby being employed going into
busy period of fixtures.
Saturday’s 36-27 bonus point
win over Marist Albion at Edgar
MacIntosh Park put Sumner
joint top of the competiton
on 10 points with defending
champions Lincoln University.
Going into the match Sumner
were already without regular
first-five Nik Cummings who
could be facing surgery on an
injured foot. Matters were made
Aaron's Surf Report
deg C which is about average for
mid-April. The only problem
with an epic hot summer is we’ve
become too soft for a normal
Christchurch autumn.
The South Island Grom series
finished off in Kaikoura a few
weeks back. Local surfers battled
worse when Josh Toy – who has
been impressive in the No 10
jersey – suffered a concussion
after landing from an awkward
tackle.
Sumner were also without a
proven first-five on their bench
due to division two regular Zack
Grey falling ill. So, when Toy
came off coach Martin Dodgson
found himself in a pickle.
It was former New Brighton
winger/centre Filimoni
Waqainabete (right) who ended
up coming off the bench to slot
in a first-five, raising eyebrows .
“You should have seen the
opposition 10, he looked up
and went what the f***,” said
Dodgson.
The Canterbury sevens player
wasted no time showing he
had the skill set to slot into the
playmaking role by setting up
a try with a well weighted chip
through the defence after a
scrum on the Marist 10 metre
line.
How Dodgson came up with
SPORTS
some big and challenging conditions
at Meatworks over the
weekend.
Jack Tyro won the under-12
boys and won the overall series
title undefeated over four
contests. Jordan Sparrow was
fourth in Kaikoura and finished
the series second overall in the
under-18 boys. Ava Henderson
continued her great run winning
the under-14 girls and winning
the series as well. Holly Campbell
put in a great performance
to come fourth in the under-14
girls and second in the under-12
girls and achieved the same
placings in the series. Eden Hungerford
won the under-12 girls in
Kaikoura and sister Estella was
second in the under-18 girls.
Local boardriders club, Point
Surf Team, were third overall
in the South Island Grom series
which is a great achievement.
Well done to all the PST groms.
PST is making a come back.
One quiet achiever on the
national contest scene this year
has been Sumner’s Thomas
Harcourt. Thomas has been getting
some great results in both
the open and under-20 divisions
in the national series. Thomas
was fourth at the South Island
champs in Dunedin and is sitting
fifth on the national junior
ratings with two events to go.
This weekend will see the national
series come closer to home
with the Exit Surf Canterbury
men’s surf champs kicking off
on Saturday. The event will find
the best waves between Taylors
Mistake and Gore Bay.
•Aaron Lock is the Sumner
Learn to Surf school principal
director
Sumner gets off to perfect Hawkins Cup start
the ingenuous idea to play the
powerful Fijian at first-five
has been the talk about town.
Some have even claimed to have
witnessed straws being drawn.
However, Dodgson has put these
rumours to bed claiming to have
taken a more holistic approach.
“I said who wants to play
10 and he said ‘I will’ so I said
‘sweet, done’.”
Sumner’s new tackle breaker
turned playmaker could prove
pivotal in their upcoming home
stand at St Leonards Park.
They host last year’s beaten
finalists on Saturday before
playing Burnside on Anzac Day.
The biggest test of all then comes
on Saturday April 29 when they
play Lincoln University.

Heathcote stalwart honoured
• By Gordon Findlater
LONG-TIME Heathcote opener
John Garry was recognised for
his two decade long commitment
to senior A cricket in Canterbury
by being awarded the Peter
Russell trophy.
The trophy was awarded
to Garry for his outstanding
contribution at
the Canterbury
Metro Cricket
Association’s
night last week.
In February
the 49-year-old
became the
John Garry
first player in
the senior A
competition’s
history to score 10,000 career
runs. He also holds the record
for most runs in a season in
senior A grade, scoring 1060
runs during the 2008-2009
season at an average of over 70.
Garry also looks set to be the
only player to ever score 10,000
runs at senior A level. The
competition will be replaced by
a new look premier competition
next season.
Garry won’t be a part
of the Heathcote premier
team going forward due to
coaching commitments with
his children’s cricket team on
Saturday mornings. However,
the coaching role will see him
MILESTONE: Heathcote opener John Garry won the Peter Russell trophy for outstanding
contribution to senior A club cricket after being the first to score 10,000 runs.
remain well and truly involved
with the club and he plans to
play for a twenty20 side in the
afternoon.
Before moving to Christchurch
in the early 1990’s he played
premier cricket in Dunedin
where he also represented Otago
B.
“I got asked to fill in for
Heathcote one afternoon and I
never really left,” said Garry.
Since then Garry has
completed 18 seasons for
Heathcote mixed amongst a
break from the sport and also
turning to what is known as
the ‘dark side’ by his pairs at
Heathcote, when he spent three
years with the Sumner club.
The opener had questioned
whether or not to continue
SPORTS
playing at senior A level for
Heathcote coming into this
season. But with the 10,000 run
milestone within reach he was
tempted back to the crease.
“I was pretty chuffed to get
there and to still be able to compete
at that level.”
Garry helped Heathcote to
claim the treble this season,
winning the senior A oneday,
two-day and combined
competition trophies. He scored
299 runs in 10 one-day matches
and 154 runs in five two-day
matches.
He says winning the treble
was the perfect way to go out at
the club’s top level of cricket and
believes a platform has been laid
for them to flourish.
“It’s a real grass roots club and
with what we’ve been through
with the earthquake having to
rebuild the place, seeing where
the club is now is sensational.
Our goal was to get the club up
to a premier cricket grade. The
criteria that we had to meet to
be eligible to play in that grade
was huge and we’ve managed to
achieve that.”
As for his favourite memories
in his 18-year career with the
senior A side it’s hard to narrow
them down.
“It’s just the ground. Everyone
looks forward to playing there
because it’s just one pitch on one
ground, you’re not sharing it
with anyone. It’s a fantastic place
for cricket with the hills around
you. The lower grade teams don’t
get to play there as often so that’s
the biggest thing I’ll miss.”
