WOOLSTON PUPILS are
learning how meat is produced
as part of a new national
education programme.
The project is funded by the
Red Meat Profit Partnership
and delivered by NZ Young
Farmers.
It will see pupils from 100 primary
schools study science and
genetics before visiting a sheep
and beef farm.
St Anne’s Catholic School
pupils are the first in Canterbury
to take part.
“I learned that when cows eat,
their food comes back up and
they chew it a bit more before
Mr Thomas said the guidelines
went “to key stakeholders for
comment” and are expected to
be completed by Monday. They
include information which will
assist “decision makers make
consistent decisions when
considering requests to apply the
bylaw.”
Community Board deputy chairwoman
Helen Broughton said
she made two suggestions after
reading the draft guidelines.
swallowing it again,” year 4 pupil
Ruby Swain said after visiting
Arion Farm Education Park.
Pupils got to move sheep
between paddocks and feed goats
during the hands-on field trip.
“The highlight for me was
learning about a sheep’s diet and
discovering that cows have four
stomachs,” year 4 pupil Keyarn
Prakash said.
“It was a great experience,”
said year 5 pupil Luke Lovell.
“I learned that only certain
breeds of sheep have horns and
goats have strong gums so they
can eat prickles.”
The aim of the programme is
“There is a section which
considers whether the street is
being used as a thoroughfare for
to help educate people about the
variety of careers in the agri-food
sector.
“We want to get the industry
on the radar of students and
teachers, so they’re aware of the
opportunities,” RMPP project
manager Di Falconer said.
New Zealand’s red meat sector
will need to find an extra 33,000
workers by 2025 to replace
people who will retire or exit the
industry.
“These are city kids who
wouldn’t usually consider this
field of work. So, it’s widened
their horizons,” teacher Josh
Halkett said.
a range of traffic. It states, if so,
traffic calming measures should
be considered. Traffic calming
measures are non-existent
through lack of funding,” she
said. Mrs Broughton said that
part of the guideline should be
deleted or modified. She also said
there needed to be an “additional
paragraph to state that the community
board has discretionary
powers relating to heavy traffic
vehicle restraint.”
When asked when restrictions
may be put on Lodestar Ave,
Mr Thomas said “staff expect to
be able to provide advice to the
community board in May.”
Cr Galloway said she will
“absolutely” bring the issue
before the board once the
guidelines have been developed.
She said a heavy vehicle
restriction is one way of dealing
with the issue and the board
would have to consider all
available options to get the
“best outcome for the
community.”
A Lady Wigram Retirement
Village resident said the issue
is ongoing and she hopes
something is done about it soon.
