SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday [Edition April 24 datE] 2018 29 11 SCHOOL & COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE CULTURAL DIVERSITY Among the many changes and developments continually taking place in the south-west sector of Christchurch, the arrival of new residents from many different parts of the world is playing a significant role. Some of these new arrivals came to provide much-needed assistance with the city’s post-earthquake rebuild, while others have come to find new opportunities for themselves and their families. Their ethnic and cultural diversity has brought vibrancy to our neighbourhoods, our shopping centres, our restaurant facilities. School rolls now boast an unprecedented multi-cultural mix of students as the children of immigrant families set out on their path to learning and taking their place in New Zealand society. One of the area’s largest secondary schools, Riccarton High School, has more than 50 ethnicities represented there, and as a celebration of the ethnic diversity both in the school and the community as a whole, they recently held a Culture Fest at the school. Students, teachers, parents and people from the local community came together to enjoy a variety of cultural musical and dance performances put on by students from Riccarton High School, Riccarton Primary School and various cultural groups, and sample diverse ethnic foods. While the evening was cool and damp, which meant the event had to be held in the school assembly hall, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the audience, who clapped and cheered enthusiastically for the performers. The idea for Culture Fest came from Riccarton High School principal Neil Haywood, and grew out of a Cultural Walkthrough, an event organised last year. For that, ethnic group leaders came together to discuss ways to celebrate the cultural diversity of the local area and create a sense of belonging for new New Zealand residents. As a community event Culture Fest was a collaboration between the school and the Riccarton Public Library. The school’s librarian Sally Blake and cultural diversity facilitator Lulette Carney organised the food and entertainment, and the library, along with community groups and organisations, set up stands to provide information about their particular areas of interest.
