Charity Musical Lunch in
Support of 500 Miles
Gryffe Valley Rotary Club
in co-operation with St
Columba’s School held
a Charity Musical Lunch
at the school on Sunday
15th April for around 100
guests.
After short introductory
speeches by the acting
President of Gryffe Valley
Rotary, David Fairbairn,
and the Rector of St Columba’s, Mrs Andrea Angus, the guest of honour,
Olivia Giles OBE, was invited to tell the gathered company about the 500
miles charity which she founded almost ten years ago. Olivia, herself a
quadruple amputee as a result of meningitis, recognised the desperate
plight of similarly disabled people in Africa where lack of mobility restricts
access to education and employment and leads to social exclusion. In
2008 she set up the charity – 500 miles - to help amputees in Malawi and
Zambia be fitted with artificial limbs. She works unpaid and has raised
more than £2.5m to date; recruited and trained staff at three locations;
and overseen growth. Olivia showed a new video about the charity and
thanked Rotary for its continuing financial support.
Local vocalists Mark and Daniella Hathaway accompanied by Matthew
Brown completed what was a wonderful afternoon of musical entertainment.
Very appropriate was the song “Impossible Dream”. When Olivia started
500 miles some would have thought that her level of ambition represented
an impossible dream but through Olivia’s determined efforts, already
more than 6000 patients have been given their mobility and currently 150
patients/month are being treated.
The support of St Columba’s School was much appreciated. All proceeds -
expected to be in excess of £2,500 - will be donated to 500 miles.
Funds raised in support of Soroptimist
Charities
Members of S.I. Paisley raised the
magnificent sum of £1,500 at their recent
fundraising Bridge Lunch. This money will
go to their two main charities for the year,
RAMH and the Lodging House Mission,
helping those with mental health issues
and the homeless.
Those attending tucked in to a welcome bowl of home-made lentil soup,
followed by a selection of freshly made sandwiches before settling down to
the serious business of playing. With prizes for the highest scoring players
and a selection of good prizes to be won in the raffle, everyone had a lovely
afternoon whilst helping two good charities.
