We were all enthralled as we were brought back to the Scottish folk music scene of the 60’s and 70’s. Everyone enjoyed singing along to well known songs. Altogether a great night. So, music lovers, we have another great evening lined up for the 11th May, featuring singer/songwriter Jimmy Livingstone. He has played here before and is described as having “A timeless voice that will stop you in your tracks”. Tickets are £10 each and are available from the Old Library Centre. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start. All our usual classes are running – Yoga, Pilates, FABS (exercise for over 60’s), Bridge Club, Book Group, Craft Group and our Music and Movement for toddlers. Remember we also offer office facilities – photocopying, scanning, faxing, laminating, and have computers for hire and internet use, all for a very reasonable cost. Tables cost £10 and must be pre-booked (please bring your own table). There will also be food and refreshments available. The event will be held at Mid Gavin Equestrian Centre, by Howwood which sits just behind Mid Gavin Nursery. Follow the road signs for the Nursery, from the B787 turnoff into Howwood from the A737. The Centre is not accessible from the Belltrees Road. Don’t worry about the weather - our car boot sale will be in the indoor arena. Liz Simson and Dr Morag Thow started the L o c h w i n n o c h and Howwood Heart Start C o m m u n i t y in 2014. Liz worked as a r e s u s c i t a t i o n officer in Western infirmary and G a r t n a v e l hospitals and has been a Heart Start instructor since the late 1990s and always had a keen interest in teaching life support. Morag has been involved in Cardiac Rehabilitation improving the lives of people and their families who have a variety of cardiac conditions for over 30 years. Liz and Morag reached 400 graduates from their Heart Start Community in March 2018 and would like to reach 500 as soon as possible! So please sign up to one of their courses - there are two before the summer break, so please come and help us reach our goal of 500!!! kilbarchan - howwood - lochwinnoch - elderslie Kilbarchan Parish Church in May Friday 1th May: Kilbarchan Boys’ Brigade holds its Annual Inspection and Display at 7.30pm in the Parish Church hall. The Inspecting Officer this year is Joan McKinnon, representing Messy Church. Saturday 12th May: We welcome the Allander Jazz Band at 7.30pm in the church hall. Tickets are £10, school-age £5, including a buffet supper and can be booked by phoning 01505 703532. This is a BYOB evening-soft drinks only please. Please feel free to come along - all welcome. kilbarchan - howwood - lochwinnoch - elderslie Local Group at HEART of their Community The Howwood Emergency Amateur Response Team (HEART) was formed to ensure the local area can continue to operate should an emergency situation occur. During the recent severe weather, the 25-strong group cleared and gritted local roads and bus stops, ensured the area around the local primary school was free of snow and ice and visited elderly residents throughout Howwood . HEART volunteer, Joe Graham, said: “In 2012, Howwood Community Council first started developing its own Community Response group, referred to as HEART, and published its own Community Resilience Plan - delivering a copy of it to every household. “Following a number of training events and responses to ‘real’ local emergencies we now have over 25 volunteers willing to assist in times of need. “In addition to its very practical purposes, Community Resilience helps put pride back into local communities allowing residents to take ownership of the hardships facing them, and to respond positively for the greater good of the community. You also get to know your neighbours better and it can be quite good fun too!” Working alongside the Council’s Civil Contingencies Service as part of the #RenReady campaign, local communities are encouraged to undertake a variety of measures to ensure they are prepared for poor weather or other emergencies. This includes preparing an emergency plan, clearing paths around homes, checking in on any vulnerable neighbours and keeping an emergency kit in their car just in case. Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “Their hard work when faced with unprecedented bad weather recently made an enormous difference to the Howwood area, and shows what can be achieved when the community comes together.” kilbarchan - howwood - lochwinnoch - elderslie Kilbarchan Messy Church Saturday 19th May, 4pm–6pm Church Halls, Steeple Square. Along with the usual craft stalls, there will be a bouncy castle, hot dogs, tea room, children’s activities, licensed bar, “beat the goalie”, baking competition and a musicals themed fancy dress competition for all ages. We have some fantastic prizes for the Grand Draw, tickets for which are on sale now from any of the team.
