38 the advertizer Houston Primary School The Primary 7 pupils spent the day at the Scottish Parliament and were given a guided tour of the amazing building designed by Enric Miralles. They are also looking forward to their annual residential trip to Loch Insh, where they will learn to windsurf, kayak, canoe, sail and raft build to name but a few activities that are on offer. A wonderful week of adventure lies ahead. Primary 2, 3 and 4 held open afternoons which were very well attended. It is a wonderful opportunity for parents and grandparents to come and see all the amazing work that we do. Thank you for all the positive comments in our Visitors book. Bee Happy Marion Greig from Bee Happy joined us for Assembly to share all the interesting work that the Bee Happy group get up to in our village. The pupils learned about the importance of encouraging bees to our gardens and green spaces, as well as a number of interesting facts. Bees have 5 eyes and 6 legs. Honey bees harvest nectar and pollen from flowering plants. Male bees in the hive are called drones and they do not have a stinger. Honey bees live in large groups called colonies. An average beehive can hold around 50,000 bees. Underpass Partnership The Primary 7 pupils from Houston Primary School and St. Fillan’s Primary are working in partnership to design and paint the underpasses in Houston. T his was done a number of years ago, but sadly the vandals have spoiled the previous artwork. This project will cheer the underpasses up, while the pupils get to know each other in preparation for secondary. SAAS Open for 2018 funding applications Renfrewshire North & West MSP Derek Mackay is encouraging students to submit their 2018/2019 funding applications now. SAAS have now opened applications for 2018/2019 full and part time courses. To ensure students have their funding in place for the start of their course all students should apply now, submitting their complete application along with all the required supporting evidence. SAAS Chief Executive, Paul Lowe said: “We are pleased to open funding applications for both part-time and full-time students on the same day. “Each year SAAS handles over a quarter of a million applications. I would encourage students to apply now to ensure they receive their funding in good time. Eligible students should apply to us for tuition fees, bursary support and student loans. Seven schools attended and enjoyed being challenged with some tough questions from History to Islands. Howwood Primary School were delighted to come first. Our winning team were Robbie Meikle, Maisie MacFarlane, Fraser Walker and Joseph White. Howwood were successful again at the cluster K’nex challenge where the winners from each class challenge came together to build a working ferris wheel. Mr Fulton from Johnstone High hosted the event and said it was really difficult to pick the winners and runners up. Angus Poole and Fergus Dorrington from Howwood came first with a team from Auchenlodment as runners up. Both teams will go on to represent their cluster in the Regional final ion May. Kilmacolm Playgroup What a lot of busy little bees there were at playgroup last month creating lots of Easter goodies including cards, bunnies even some yummy chocolate nest cakes. It was a sad but proud moment for the Playleaders as they bid farewell to the older children who are moving onto their nurseries this term. Finally, Playgroup is delighted to welcome the lovely Eilidh Wilson to the group as new Assistant Playleader. She is sure to be a big hit with the children and parents alike. Playgroup runs on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We take children from 2 years and 4 months. SPACES AVAILABLE! Lochwinnoch Primary School Open Afternoons The school has been very busy this month hosting class open afternoons for parents and carers to come and see all of the children’s wonderful work. Primary 7, 7/6 and 6 hosted a WW2-themed open afternoon. A WW2 treasure hunt gave everyone an opportunity to explore the school and enjoy the children’s amazing art. Primary 5, 5/4 and 4 treated their visitors to a Scottish-themed afternoon. The children even had their visitors taking part in some Scottish dancing! Primary 3, 3/2 and 2 celebrated their Katie Morag topic. They performed for visitors in the assembly hall and then invited them back to their classes to play games and use the in-class ‘Post Office’. Lastly, Primary 1 hosted their healthy eating cafe. Visitors to this open afternoon were treated to homemade sandwiches and tasty treats that the children had made. P7 - Ardentinny Trip Primary 7 enjoyed their annual trip to Ardentinny. The children took part in forest walks, night hikes, rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, rock hopping and gorge walking; as well as search and rescue, indoor team challenges and a disco! The activities tested their physical and mental capabilities, but all members of staff were impressed with their enthusiasm, resilience and encouragement of others. Renfrewshire Cross Country Race Lochwinnoch Primary School did very well in this prestigious race with the Primary 6 boys’ team coming 3rd, the Primary 7 girls’ and boys’ teams both coming 2nd and the Primary 6 girls’ team winning 1st place. Congratulations to Ryan Knights who won 1st overall for Primary 7 boys. Well done! Arts Festival The Primary 5, 5/4 and 4 helped Sally Maidment design a mural for the festival called “The Tree of Life” and Primary 6 co-wrote a song with Claire Robertson along the same theme. The song was performed at the Arts Festival and was a collaboration of ideas centred on new beginnings, family and new life. A wonderful project to be part of! 39 @GryffeAds www.advertizer.co.uk
