We have been making the
most of the occasional sunny
day and now are proudly
displaying some wonderful pots
and planters with gorgeous
spring flowers. Many thanks
to Norman Johnstone for our
lovely wooden planters, these
are great for the children to
experience gardening and ties
in with our spring and summer
topics that we are following
this term.

Winners

The annual Inter-School Mini Tennis Doubles
Tournament was won by Houston Primary for the
seventh year in a row. The competition, which
was launched for the first time in 2003, was a
joint venture by Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash
Club and Active Schools Renfrewshire and has
firmly been in the local schools’ calendar ever
since.
A team of tennis coaches from Strathgryffe
delivered a four week block of coaching
sessions, free of charge to all P6 pupils at Bridge of Weir, Houston and St Fillan’s Primary Schools. A team of
8 boys and 8 girls were then selected to represent their school and participate in a round robin doubles league
with points being awarded at the end of each round to each winning couple. The competition was held in the
indoor courts at Strathgryffe on Thursday 22nd March.
Susan Weanie, Tennis Development Manager commented
‘We have a great relationship with the local schools.
Strathgryffe visits them regularly to deliver taster sessions,
which has resulted in many of the pupils now attending
our coaching programme.’
The children are delighted with
our new water play area, there
has been much splashing,
pouring, tipping and bubble
making in the nursery recently
- a great form of interactive
play !
We are delighted to be
launching our Summer
Holiday Activity Camps this
summer, extending the time
that the children can enjoy the
Duchal experience and giving
parents extra childcare at the
start and finish of the summer
holidays. These camps will
be fun activity led days at the
nursery, the staff and children
are already excited by this
new development in Duchal’s
provision of specialist childcare
in Kilmacolm.
With the start of term we will
be getting very creative with
egg boxes and stone painting
for the entries to this year’s
Kilmacolm Show, we will have
a stand there too so please

Year of Young People ambassadors help
shape the ‘once in a life time’ year ahead
Renfrewshire’s ambassadors for the Year of Young People have met with the Council to discuss what shape
the ‘once in a life time’ year ahead will take.
This year has been designated as a 12 month celebration of young people and aims to inspire Scotland
through celebrating their achievements.
There are more than 200 young ambassadors who are representing every local authority across Scotland,
including ten in Renfrewshire.
Their role is to build awareness of YoYP 2018 activity so their communities know what’s happening.
Ahead of a year of youth led events, the ambassadors have met with Renfrewshire Council’s Youth Services,
Council Leader Iain Nicolson and Convener of Education and Children’s Services, Councillor Jim Paterson.
Cllr Paterson said: “We are delighted to meet with some of the young ambassadors and establish links with
them to ensure they have a strong local voice.
“There is an incredibly exciting year ahead of us and we want them to be able to help inform how the Year of
Young People 2018 will look in Renfrewshire and have them tell us is in their words what they would like to
do. “
Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “It’s vital that our young people are listened to as they have creative ideas
on how to improve their own lives.
“In return we have asked what support and training we can offer them and offered the opportunity to meet
groups such as Renfrewshire Youth Voice.”
A number of the ambassadors including Olivia Galbraith, Lauren McEwan, Cara Brown, Rebecca Adams,
Sean Sweeney and Angus Collingridge-Watt attended the meeting and also met with Youth Commission group
members.
Lauren McEwan, 17, from Paisley Grammar School said: “This is the first time everybody has come together
in Renfrewshire and it’s great to meet everyone and share ideas.
“We are excited to work together to bring a great Year of Young People and make it as good as it can be.”
