GET READY FOR SUMMER - BY BEN HUTTON
So the sun has finally come out after a
long, wet and miserable winter and I have
noticed an increasing number of people
out running and cycling.
Evenings are getting lighter, our moods are improving
and we all want to catch a little bit of sun, so now is
the perfect time to get active outdoors!
May is ‘National Walking Month’, and if you live a
relatively sedentary life, walking is the perfect place
to start. You could perhaps walk to work, or if that’s
not an option, you could park a little further away
than normal. You could take the stairs rather than the
escalators, or you could walk your dog a little more.
Studies have proved two things, 1. Exercise is improves
our mood through release of ‘feel good’ endorphins,
and obviously our health for a number of reasons and
2. Controlled sun exposure improves our mood, as
well as our health. So why not combine the two?
Personally I have just signed up to join a Canicross
club, which is a running club for owners and their four
legged friends! I’m using this to kick-start my running
season, as well as meet new people and socialise my
dog a little more.
There are a number of social clubs you could get
involved with over summer, like boot camps, village
cycle clubs and park runs. Park runs are a great way to
get out in a welcoming environment and run or walk
at your own pace with a friendly group of locals!
A little added bonus, is you’ll burn more calories when
it’s hot, but remember to stay hydrated and always
listen to your body, if you feel like it’s too much then
take a rest, it is easy to over work during summer.
Move More. Stay Hydrated. Have Fun.
