On January 21, 1973, twenty-one<br />

reserve police <strong>of</strong>ficers graduated<br />

from the police academy, after<br />

completing the required 220 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> state-mandated police training.<br />

<strong>The</strong> police department had 94<br />

reserve police <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

In June 1973, Mary Ann Cichocki,<br />

a mother <strong>of</strong> two young boys and<br />

one girl, and a self-described<br />

“housewife,” became the first<br />

woman reserve police <strong>of</strong>ficer. Her<br />

husband was also a reserve police<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer. Officer Cichocki stated<br />

during a newspaper interview that<br />

she would work two eight-hour<br />

shifts each week as a reserve police<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer. In May 1975, she received<br />

the Optimist Club <strong>Reserve</strong> <strong>Police</strong><br />

Officer <strong>of</strong> the Year Award.<br />
